Hello everybody! In case you didnt know this is
our 1st Edition of the year 2017. Lets see where all
the commotion leads us this year with our New
President Donald Trump.
I do want to apologize for not starting last week, I had a few personal issues to handle,
meetings, Doctors, attorneys and paperwork to file. It was more than I expected to
happen. I am fine, everything is swell in our Land of FREEPORTs Newspaper.
Our schedule for print is now to a time that will help me out. Please make note of this.
Any and all information needs to be E-mailed to me on Tuesday by 4pm. Your best bet for
space is to try and send it to me on Monday the week of print. Call me, if it is a last
minute fix or desire you have. I am here to help you!
We will be continuing to run every other week until you see more Advertisements, then
we would be happy to grow. I try to be throughout the county delivering near noontime on
Wed. I visit businesses before they close. I offer some Papers to all of the businesses in
Freeport, even if they do not Advertise. They enjoy having a complimentary item to offer
to each customer. Show your pride in Freeport thru the newspaper. When they decide to
Advertise, they know we are here for you! We are now upcoming on our 9th Year in
business, Im sure most of you thought this wouldnt be appreciated as it has been for so
many years. Even the south side of Walton up to including the Northern parts around DFS
are calling to find more Newspapers. (Currently 2500-EOW).
I want to take a minute to remind businesses, I have offers as low as $25, up to a half
page for only $100, full page of $200. And anything in between, it is your budget I can
work with you. Friends and readers, save this.
To post anything else in a Classified type of Notice the cost is only $10. really.
Some of you may want to keep this information near you, for when you got a story, or a
need to tell folks about your upcoming event. Very important stuff to remember!
Just another reminder to you all. When I started this venture, I have an inner desire to be
appreciated by helping others. Just as I advertise my business now, all true businesses
should at minimum have their name, # and location in every print. Why? Because we are
still a pass thru type of town. For only $10, you still dont see what Im saying?
The same as when we travel, we look for our destination. Missing out on the small,
quaint, enjoyable small businesses and what they have to offer. Hopefully they have hotel
suggestions for those small business. Can you imagine, a city with taller buildings, and
bigger attractions, than what we have here? Chances are the town maybe forgotten and
even dwindle away, if the people who live here dont show a unity of some sort.
We are more than just a fishin spot. We are more than just a County full of positions
with folks who do not see the maximum potential this county could be. Appears to me
that they want to keep it as rural as possible, however then you have little near you.
Ive always felt that a few nice hotels, or even a Condo or two would have great views
over the Bay. South of Freeport. Build it now they will come! You dont wait to see what
other counties are going to do, chances are they are making deals not beneficial to us.
Plus where do these kids families have to stay when an out of town tournament comes to
Hammock Bay sports Complex? You have to be creative, for to think of the future is
activities for the kids to get involved in. The main source of a problem is when you give
kids Computers and phones, yet they dont know how to react to a situation involving
other people. It has been proven that there is a lack of human to human interactions.
This Friday will be a Day to remember. A Day that shows the Tyranny of political
people acting above the Law are over. You should be held accountable for the job you do.
Whether it be good or trying to hide servers and pass Classified material. Since she didnt
get any charges at this time, is it safe to say that we could do the same and expect no
punishment. Plead the Clinton? Of course not, they would want you to be made of as an
example for others not to do.blah,blah,blah. (As Al Sharpton continues walking Free,
no debt for taxes owed? He is still creating racial tension where it has no place to be at.

Poor Willy Nelson, fell back on owed taxes, (about 1/4 of what Sharpton owes). Willy
served his time, the FBI ransacked his home and took anything of value. Im sure he had
some dandy memorabilia stolen. But he did his time for his crime. He is out singing songs
like he did before while helping push for the State of Florida to legalize weed. The
peoples vote favored legalization by 73% . The benefits are too much to just ignore!
They have passed Laws for it medicinally 1st, as we have seen in Colorado, the revenue
from legalizing it recreational will boost the economy and help citizens from everywhere.
Road problem funding? Funds need for Emergency locations? Funds for parks to build
for children? Funds to help a family in Dire need? How wrong can it be to help each
other. Some smoke it, some dont. Its like cigarettes are. Some smoked em, some dont.
There is a group called NORML, they are the best website to keep you posted of your
rights and how to apply to get a Medicinal Card from an approved Dr. in our State.
Between Alcohol and Weed, I definitely know that Alcohol does 5x more trouble being
impaired to drive, walk and talk. No weed has ever made anyone zoned out so bad they
couldnt handle themselves decently. So, be informed, stay informed. Laws are changing!

Can you Play Catch-Up and Be Healthy?

Were about 3 weeks into the new year, and for many of us, that means
our resolutions to eat better, get more sleep, and exercise are probably
running headlong into real life.
Sure, its great to get to the gym every day, but sometimes a daily
workout has to go if youve been up all night with a sick child or youve
got a pressing project that needs attention at work. Ditto for the idea of
packing a healthy lunch and getting plenty of shut-eye.
But dont give up. Science shows that even if youve been less than
perfect, you can still reap big health benefits if you catch up.
Didnt exercise enough last week? Being a weekend warrior has almost
as many benefits as Monday-through-Friday workouts. Didnt get
enough shut-eye? Extra ZZZs for a couple of nights can help undo some
of the physical harms of cheating your sleep. Ate too much? Studies
show that you can make up for overindulging -- and even lose some
weight -- by just being a part-time calorie counter. In fact, experts say,
embracing imperfection can help you reach your health goals.
Youve probably heard that you need to get about 150 minutes of
moderate physical activity like brisk walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous
activity like jogging, or some mix of the two, each week. But very few
of us reach that goal, which is recommended by the CDC and World
Health Organization.
In fact, most Americans get less than 10 minutes of moderate exercise
every day, according to a 2015 study that used data collected on nearly
8,000 adults who wore activity monitors for a week. A tiny fraction of
people in that study -- about 3% -- were barely active during the week,
but they made up for it on weekends, averaging about an hour of
moderate to vigorous physical activity on both Saturday and Sunday.
Now, a new study suggests these weekend warriors may be on to
something. The study, which included data from more than 63,000
adults in the U.K., found that adults who reported meeting physical
activity recommendations by squeezing all their exercise into just one or
two sessions a week had a 30% lower risk of early death than people
who got no exercise at all. They also had a lower chance of dying from
cancer or heart disease than people who were sedentary.
As long as they didnt have any major things that raised their odds of
disease, like being overweight, being a smoker, or having high blood
pressure or high cholesterol.

First Large-scale Solar Project Gets

Underway at Eglin AFB, Saufley Field
with Installation of Solar Panels
Executives from Gulf Power, Coronal Energy,
powered by Panasonic, will join officials from Eglin
Air Force Base and NAS Pensacolas Saufley Navy
Outlying Field Wednesday, Jan. 18, for the installation of the first two solar photovoltaic panels on two
large-scale solar projects
These projects, along with a third at NAS Whiting
Fields Holley Outlying Field, will be among the
states largest solar projects with approximately 1.5
million solar panels capable of generating up to 120
megawatts of electricity, enough energy to power
nearly 18,000 homes annually.
The milestone marks a significant stage in the construction of the three facilities on Department of
Defense property in Northwest Florida that began in
November at Naval Air Station Pensacolas Saufley
Outlying Field, Naval Air Station Whiting Fields
Holley Outlying Field and Eglin Air Force Base,
and is expected to be operational during the summer
of 2017.
The large-scale project is under construction by
Gulf Power and its third-party developer, Coronal
Energy, powered by Panasonic. The projects will
support the Department of Defenses commitment
to renewable energy and help further diversify Gulf
Powers energy portfolio and support the mission to
provide safe, affordable and reliable environmentally responsible energy for its Northwest Florida
customers.
Energy produced by the projects will serve Gulf
Power customers across Northwest Florida and
were approved by the Florida Public Service Commission in April 2015. Together, these facilities will
be among the largest photovoltaic arrays in Florida
and have the potential to reduce carbon dioxide
emissions by more than 3.5 million tons over 25
years. Combined they will be one of the largest solar projects east of the Mississippi.

through Saturday, January 24th, 2017. For 8 days
only, the libraries will waive fines on overdue materials in exchange for food items to benefit the local
food pantry for the Freeport community. For each
overdue library item returned January 14th through
January 24th Library patrons will get $1 in current
fines* waived for each can or package of nonperishable food items such as peanut butter, pasta
and/or canned food. This does not apply to overdue
damaged materials or items that have already been
billed for replacement. The Freeport Public Library
will gladly accept donations even if there are no
fines to be waived. Thank you for your support! If

The first city council meeting was held for the new year and several things
were accomplished.
The No Wake Zone for Four Mile Creek Ordinance had its second reading and
was adopted and will become effective upon completion of the approved and
adopted pursuant to Walton Countys procedure, approval by the Florida Fish
and Wildlife conservation commission pursuant to 327.46, F.S, and upon posting
of the regulatory markers. The current city government is set up with a Mayor/
Council -Strong Mayor form of government where the Mayor can vote in case of
a tie in the event a council member is not present, the council has voted to put on
the election ballot in July to have the form of government changed to a nonvoting Mayor which will mean there will be no tie breaking vote by the Mayor
and whatever the topic is being voted on will have to have a majority of votes
from the council or it will die from lack of agreement, this referendum will be
place on the July 11th ballot, if this referendum is voted on and passed it means
the city council members can discuss topics with the mayor prior to a meetings
without violation of the Sunshine Law. The city council is also considering the
repairs needed for the city pool to address if it will be feasible to open beginning
in May. We welcome First Florida Bank to our community as we held an official
ribbon cutting on January 13th, they are in the new Publix Shopping Center and
we appreciate them joining our community and look forward too many years of
service. I have received some more complaints about the odor which seems to be
coming from the landfill location just outside of the city limits and I have contacted the county and they are in touch with DEP out of Pensacola to see if an
inspection of the facilities can be done and hopefully the situation taken care of,
please be patient and know that we have contacted the necessary authorities on
this matter. The city has received a $10,000 grant from Enterprise Florida for
upgrading our website, now RFQs will begin being sought after within the state
of Florida for that upgrade. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Freeport
School presented three new park benches representing the Taylor Haugen Foundation to Casey Park next to city hall. The presentation was by officers- Wendy
McCormick, Bethany Longmire, Zack Seay, Shannon Carswell and sponsor
Carla Hunt, many thanks to the organization for the donation to the community.
The annual Miss Freeport Pageants will be held on March 4 th and sign-ups will
begin on January 28th, from 9:00 am- 1:00 pm at the Blount House on Kylea
Laird Drive., for further information contact city hall. The next city council meeting will be held on January 26, beginning at 6:00 pm. As usual any comments,

Police Officer Rejects Settlement Offer

Arbitrator's decision expected this summer
The DeFuniak Springs City Council voted last week to make a
settlement offer to Sgt. Anthony Kaiser, one of two officers fired in
2015 over the racial harassment of fellow officer Chuwan Boros.
After months of mediation, arbitration, testimony and statements, in
a 3 to 2 vote, the City Council voted to offer Kaiser reinstatement to
his position, reinstatement of all benefits (including retirement) and
half of his back-pay in exchange not to pursue further legal action
against the city. City Marshal Mark Weeks said Kaiser rejected the
offer a few days later.
Kaiser, who was a supervisor, is accused of failing to act or
intervene in the continued racial harassment of Officer Boros by
fellow officer Patrolman Rick Boblitt. Boblitt was only a few years
away from retirement when both men were terminated by Chief of
Police Mark Weeks after an extensive investigation. However, they
were rehired and placed on administrative leave until former City
Manager Sara Bowers terminated them permanently after a formal
hearing. The case then proceeded to mediation and then to
arbitration last fall with Police Benevolent Association attorneys
representing the officers.
Both men claim their conduct and remarks were jokes among
friends and that Patrolman Boros, who is of Asian decent, also
participated. Boros denies the comments were welcomed and said
he tried to get along with both men but the harassment increased
and got worse to the point that he dreaded to come to work.
Chief Mark Weeks has opposed any settlement that would allow
either officer back on the force. "We cannot tolerate racial
harassment in any form, especially in this day and age," said
Weeks. "It undermines trust in every aspect of what we do."
Weeks said to rehire either officer after they have admitted to such
egregious conduct would send the wrong signal and do irreparable
damage to race relations in the community. "The focus seems to be
on the officers' rights," said Weeks. "What about the victim here?
What about Patrolman Boros? "None of us are perfect but, he has a
right to work in a hostile free environment and not have to worry
about whether or not another officer has his back because of his
race."Testimony concluded on January 9th at City Hall with nearly
a dozen witnesses testifying regarding relationships,
professionalism, personnel actions and politics. The case now rests
with a professional arbitrator whose decision is expected sometime
this summer.

Christopher Wilkins, 48, was
declared dead at 6:29 p.m., 13 mins
after a lethal injection of
pentobarbital.
Before the drug was administered,
he twice mouthed "I'm sorry," to
two relatives of one of the murder
victims as they watched through a
window. He gave no final statement.
Wilkins had explained to jurors at
his capital murder trial in 2008 how
and why he killed his friends in Fort
Worth three years earlier, saying he
didn't care if they sentenced him to
death.
Wilkins was released from prison
in 2005 after serving time for a
federal gun possession conviction.
He drove a stolen truck to Fort
Worth, where he befriended Willie
Freeman, 40, and Mike Silva, 33.
Court records show Freeman and his
drug supplier, who wasn't identified,
duped Wilkins into paying $20 for a
piece of gravel that he thought was a
rock of crack cocaine. Wilkins said
he shot Freeman on Oct. 28, 2005,
after Freeman laughed about the
scam, then he shot Silva because he
was there. Wilkins' fingerprints
were found in Silva's wrecked SUV
and a pentagram matching one of
Wilkins' numerous tattoos had been
carved into the hood.
Wilkins also testified that the day
before the shootings, he shot and
killed another man, Gilbert Vallejo,
47, outside a Fort Worth bar in a
dispute over a pay phone, and about
a week later used a stolen car to try
to run down two people because he
believed one of them had taken his
sunglasses.
"I know they are bad decisions,"
Wilkins told jurors of his actions. "I
make them anyway."
Wes Ball, one of Wilkins' trial lawyers, described him as "candid to a
degree you don't see," and had
hoped his appearance on the witness
stand would have made jurors like
him. "It didn't work," Ball said.

When questioned again, Joran told them that he dropped Holloway off at her
hotel around 2:00 a.m. According to him, she had fallen down as she exited the
car but refused to ask any of the men for help. Story Cont on Page Aruban
authorities had also received corroborating reports that the two former security
guards had been known to cruise the hotels to pick up women. Not only that, but
at least one of them had a previous incident involving local law enforcement.
Still, the men had solid alibis for the night of Natalees disappearance and were
released on June 13, 2005 without being charged. Bring em In...With no new
leads, police re-upped their investigation into Van der Sloot and his friends
involvement. The three men were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and
murdering Natalee Holloway. Unfortunately, they would not be in custody for
long. The Aruban police could not meet the burden of evidence required to hold
the men for more than several days. They had to go back to square one Police
soon found a sixth suspect: disc jockey Steve Gregory Croes. His name was
bandied about by Van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers during questioning.
Even though they still suspected Van der Sloot, the police knew they had to
investigate all angles. Croes alibi was also airtight. They then brought Joran van
der Sloots father in for questioning as well. Both men were released soon after.
With no other alternative, the police decided to go back to the most likely
suspects. Yet this time, it seemed that the story of that fateful night had changed.
The Kalpoe brothers turned on their friend. Joran had no choice but to change his
story as well. The three men suddenly remembered that the Kalpoes had dropped
Van der Sloot and Holloway off at the Marriott Hotel beach near the fishermens
huts before driving home without them Years Pass...in the end though,
despite conflicting stories, the police just didnt have enough to charge Joran or
the Kalpoe brothers with the crime. The were arrested again in November of
2007 and Joran van der Sloot, who was in the Netherlands at the time, was
extradited to Aruba and incarcerated there. Slippery as ever, Van der Sloot was
able to finagle his way out of being charged again. On February 1, 2008 the
Dutch media released a report that indicated that Joran van der Sloot had
confessed to his involvement in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. The
Dutch broadcast included excerpts from footage recorded from hidden cameras
and microphones in the vehicle of Patrick van der Eem, a Dutch businessman and
ex-convict. Van der Eem had gained Jorans confidence and asked him about
Natalee while the two of them drove around smoking marijuana
The Confession...Joran van der Sloot stated that he was with Natalee on the
beach when she began shaking violently. When her convulsions subsided, she
became unresponsive and though he attempted to revive her, she was too far
gone. After that, he called his friend, Daury, who advised him to go home while
he disposed of the body. Despite his confession Joran van der Sloot was not
arrested in connection with the death of Natalee Holloway. That was not the end
of his involvement, however. On March 29, 2010, Van der Sloot contacted Beth
Tweety with an offer to reveal the location of Holloways body and the
circumstances surrounding her death. He said that he would gladly give up the
location, just as long as she was willing to pay him $250,000 for it Beth
notified the FBI, who helped them arrange the transaction. The trap was set. On
May 10, Beth wire transferred $15,000 to Van der Sloots account in the
Netherlands. On June 3, Van der Sloot was charged in the U.S. District Court of
Northern Alabama with extortion and wire fraud. Unfortunately, he was still
living in Aruba, and there was no way he would be extradited for such a crime.
After fleeing Aruba with Beths money, Joran headed for Peru. He wasnt heard
from again for a further two years. On May 30, 2010, five years after Natalee
Holloways disappearance, Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old business student, was
reported missing in Lima, Peru. Police found her three days later in a hotel room
registered under Van der Sloots name. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison.
But what happened to Natalees body? .Never Stop Looking..For the past 12
years, both of Natalees parents, who were divorced at the time she vanished,
have been separately chasing any leads they could in the hope that they will find
their daughter. Dave Holloway has pursued lead after lead on his own, searching
land, air, and sea for any sign of Natalees remains. Beth on the other hand, has
turned her grief into a warning for others, and speaking out about safe travel
practices for teens. In 2011, Dave Holloway filed a petition with the Alabama
courts seeking to have his daughter declared legally dead.
At first, his ex-wife wanted to oppose the petition. A court was convened to
discuss the matter, and the judge ruled in Daves favor. On January 12, 2012, a
second hearing was held, and Natalee Holloway was declared dead. Now all her
parents had to do was find a way to heal This story is a reminder that even here
on our beautiful beaches, girls meet guys then drinking or drugging comes into
play. Then what? After it has happened to you, you may not remember what was.

about hours passing by as they drift off into a
land far away, without leaving the house.
I have heard of contact lens that you place in
your eye that also can shield you from seeing
anything but Virtual reality. I wonder how long
before people get killed walking into traffic.

With the 2016-2017 flu season in full swing and influenza

activity increasing across the state, it is critical that all Floridians get the flu vaccine to protect against infection and help
prevent the spread of seasonal flu to others. It is never too late
to get your flu shot. While most cases of flu are mild, there
are exceptions.
Medical providers in Walton County have started to see flu
activity during the past couple of weeks, stated Holly Holt,
Health Officer of the Florida Department of Health in Walton
County. It is not too late to get the flu vaccine and it is important for the public, especially those at high risk, to protect
themselves against the flu.
Flu activity is on the rise in Florida, particularly in groups at
high risk for severe illness such as children, pregnant women,
people with underlying chronic conditions and people over the
age of 65. Visits to emergency departments for influenza are
also increasing in these high risk groups. The department continues to urge residents to reduce their risk of severe illness
from infection by getting vaccinated against influenza. This is
especially important for individuals at high-risk for severe
illness.
The annual flu vaccine is safe and is the most effective way to
protect yourself and your loved ones. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older, including pregnant women. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for
your body to develop protection against the flu. The Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people get
injectable flu shots. Nasal spray vaccine is not recommended
for this flu season because of concerns about its effectiveness.
It is also essential to practice good hygiene by properly and
