Jesus asked,
What is the kingdom of God like?
What shall I compare it to?
It is like a mustard
seed which a man
took and planted
in his garden. It
grew, became a
tree, and the birds
of the air perched
in its branches.

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in,
where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.

to social
and environmental needs.

They are those that see community gardening as a catalyst to reformation. A

community garden is a single piece of
land gardened collectively by a group of
people. The urban variety is spreading
through Detroit. There are nearly 1,200
registered vegetable gardens in Detroit.
With this comes many benefits, including a deeper relationship with each other and the land. There are those sowing; Detroit is reaping. As we love our
neighbor as ourselves, we may just be
lead to join them.

Patrick Crouch, Program Manager of

Earthworks Urban Farm (a program of the
Capuchin Soup Kitchen) explained that
the concept of Earthworks began with a
simple conversation about a gro-cery list.
In 1997 a young man stopped into the
rectory to visit with Fr. Samyn. As Friar
visited with this young man, he was
making out a shopping list for the rectory.
The young man inquired about which gas
station the Friar would shop at. This
realization, that most of the youth in the
area looked to local gas sta-tions to supply
daily food, impacted the Friar Samyn
greatly. Many are without the means of
getting to a grocery store. The public
transportation system can be unreliable
and its difficult to trans-port groceries on
the bus. More times than not, a grocery
store is out of the question. Fr. Samyn
uncovered a great need to provide healthy
options, edu-cate, and avoid waste;
through an ur-ban garden. Today the
garden provides for about 90% of the soup
kitchens needs. The remaining 10% is
available through markets within the
community.

In 2005, Taja Sevelle, a noted recording

artist, was in Detroit making a CD for
Sony. She was moved by the amount of
unused land and the high level of poverty. Beginning with three gardens in
Detroit, she started Urban Farming, an
international organization. Today, Urban Farming has planted and facilitated
over 50,000 community, residential, and
partner gardens around the world.
According to Gail Carr, Assistant Executive Director of Urban Farming,
creating an abundance of food by us-

ing unused land creates diversity and

fellowship. She mentions being pleasantly surprised at seeing both Christians and Muslims working side by side
because of their shared values of ending hunger. We all have to have food to
live, Carr states. Thats why this
movement brings all people together.
Another benefit is the reduction of

mind set. Carr expands, there is not an

issue with vandalism within the gardens
because of the community involvement.
The neighbors that work the land, also
watch over it together. This type of
com-munity pride breeds a well kept
garden. www.urbanfarming.org/
Gloria Rivera, Great Lakes Bioneers
Detroit (GLBD) Coordinator, advocates, when people do not have access
to good food or soil, its an injustice.
The whole Christian tradition of giving
should go beyond attending to peoples

immediate and basic needs. It needs to

involve those receiving support in the
decision-making process. It needs to
provide for skill building and examine
the very systems that cause hunger, poverty, homelessness. Advocacy on behalf
of environmental justice requires that
Christians go from giving to system
analysis and system change. GLBD is
an organization of people seeking to
highlight innovative approaches to
environmental and social challenges.
The organization believes that building
connections between people who share
a commitment to solving these issues
can transform communities. GLBD
offers Detroits urban farmers opporcrime, due to a different, more positive

oppression. (Feeding the City August

2010)

tunities to educate, collaborate, and

share resources. All of this support
aids in growth and better quality
gardens. www.glbd.org/index.html
Malik Yakini, chairman of the Detroit
Black Food Security, comments if the
gardening movement had no economic
viability, just the fact that its bringing
people together for the common good is
very significant. African-Americans in
Detroit tend to have a sense of despair
and helplessness that is a direct result of

For nearly six years the Security has

contributed to the public dia-logue
about food security and food justice
in Detroit. This group re-cently
expanded its D-town com-munity
farm from two acres to seven.
www.detroitblackfoodsecurity.org/
The urban community garden movement is aiding in the revitalization of
our city. Its been transforming, as it
moves into the metro area and throughout the state. As Genesis states; the Lord
God first put man in a garden. In
Michigan, we are going full circle.

was designed to blitz the Metro Detroit
area with good deeds and good words (a-la
the Two Word Story) for the 40 days before
Easter in 2011. It was a success and many,
many people didnt want it to end. So it
wont. Plans are being made in earnest to
turn a blitz into a sustainable, united effort
by churches to saturate our region with the
Gospel. Prayer and unification rallys have
already begun. Evangelism training starts
this month. Watch for announcements

Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus,
which was on view at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) Nov. 20, 2011
Feb. 12, 2012, was seen by 116,392
visitors from almost every state, including
Alaska and Hawaii.
The exhibition brought together for
the first time many of Rembrandts finest paintings, prints and drawings that
portray Jesus and events described in the
Bible. The museum extended hours three
times during the last month of the exhibition to accommodate people eager to see
many of Rembrandts masterpieces that
rarely travel to the United States.
We are delighted with the publics response, said Graham W. J. Beal, DIA di-

rector. People were deeply moved by the

exhibition and we believe word-of-mouth
was a major factor in the attendance number. Many new visitors had a chance to see
what the DIA has to offer, and we look
forward to them returning.
