Gramtica: Relative Clauses and Prepositions

Preposition Position in Relative Clauses

Phrasal verbs are verbs which always take a preposition and are very common in English.
When they appear in relative clauses we place the phrasal verb at the end of the sentence.
Phrasal Verbs:

We went to that beach.

I want you to take out that rubbish.
They got on this bus.
Relative Clauses:

That is the beach (which) we went to.

That is the rubbish (that) I want you to take out.
This is the bus (which) they got on.

Question words in Relative Clauses.

We can also use certain question words in place of who, which and that in relative clauses.
We use why for reason, when for time clauses, and where for places.
Examples:
>I

am sick. Thats the reason why I am in bed.

> 1984?
> This

Yes, that was the year when your father and I got married.

is the same hospital where you were born.
