Elder Arsenios Papatsiok (1914-2011)

Almsgiving is not only giving money out of our wallet.
Almsgiving is the acceptance of all fellow human beings - to sit next to
them to speak to them and to acknowledge them - without
alienating, embarrassing nor hurting them with our words, deeds,
thoughts or attitude.
Are we aware of those who are experiencing personal tragedy, spiritual
or physical ailments or diseases, threats or problems of any kind
of any degree? Are we doing whatever we can for others who are
worse off than we are?
We should be willing to comfort them, to assist them or to soothe their
pain, suffering or stress as best as we are able to do.
If circumstances prevent us from doing anything for others, we can
certainly pray to our Lord on their behalf, beseeching His Great
Mercy: Kyrie, eleison. Lord, have Mercy.
The most significant aspect of being Merciful and Loving towards our
suffering neighbours i.e. all human beings concerns the True
State of our own heart and soul the True Depth of our
Compassion for others! (How do we react to the pain and suffering that
surrounds us every day?)

The worst sin that will Eternally Condemn us after Death, and at our
Final Judgement will be due to neglecting the welfare and Love of
our fellow human beings!

Please use the Service Book until this point. Then

carefully follow the instructions pertaining to the
following Hymns and Readings.

off, would not so much as raise his

eyes to Heaven, but beat his breast,
saying: O God, be Merciful to me, a
sinner!

The period of Great Lent is a time of Repentance, a time of Confession. Our Lord, God and
Father seeks for nothing more than our Repentance. He wants us to Repent our sins.
When we Confess to Him our sins He Forgives us, He Heals us, He sets us free from the
bonds of sin and the evil one, ...He kills the fatted calf... and He exclaims: ...this
(Child) of Mine was Dead and is Alive again; he was Lost and is Found! (LUKE 15:27 &
LUKE 15:24)
Pretty unfair Deal! We Confess to Him our sins and we Benefit.
What are we waiting for? Why procrastinate?
Now is the time for Repentance!

St Isaac the Syrian

Brethren: Take care, for the Evil One wars against Spiritual Strugglers in various
ways. He works against us with unimaginable hypocritical cleverness.
Thus, before a sin is committed, the Enemy diminishes its significance in the eye of
Strugglers. More than any other sin, he puts before us the desire for fleshly
pleasure as such a small thing that, prior to succumbing to it, it appears as
insignificant to our conscience as throwing a glass of cold water on the
ground.
When, however, the fleshly desire is fulfilled, then the Evil One greatly puffs up the
sin in the conscience of us sinners, kindling in our soul innumerable thoughts
of despair, like black waves from Hell, so that our good thoughts of
Repentance are submerged and we are hurled into the depths of
hopelessness.
Due to the insistent, devious scheming of the Enemy, we must take care not to be
tempted into any offence - neither persisting in it nor despairing of our
Salvation.
We must always immediately arise from our fall, by returning to our Lord confident of His Compassion for He is Tender-hearted and infinitely rich in
Mercy and Long-suffering.
Our Loving Lord never punishes nor rejects those who sincerely Repent, but
immediately embraces us with Love and Joy.
Therefore, when the Enemy of our soul tries to persuade us to believe that we
have lost everything and cannot be Saved, we must proclaim: I do not
despair of my Salvation, for we have a Compassionate and Long-suffering
God, Who upholds me in my belief that He Who commanded us to forgive
others for transgressions against us - even seven times seventy will
forgive the sins of all who with their whole being turn to Him.
With unwavering Faith, and by the Grace of God, all Spiritual Warfare against
Satan will be Victorious!
