AN INTRODUCTION TO THE TEN GODS IN BAZI
AaPREFACE
When I first wrote BrZi The Destiny Code in 2005, 1 never imagined that
it would take off in the way that it did or ignite people's imagination and
thirst for Chinese Metaphysics quite the way it has. ‘The positive reaction to
The Destiny Code made writing The Destiny Code Revealed much harder as |
had to make sure I delivered a book that met the public’ expectation, So the
weight and burden of the expectation that surrounded the continuation of The
Destiny Code has been tremendous, the complexity of the subject matter itselE,
the Ten Gods, notwithstanding, I sympathise with JK Rowling a lot more
15, adaptations
these days. Fortunately, [ don’t have 10 worry about movi
or theme parks when it comes to the Destiny Cade.
In the midst of writing this book, I realised that what [ had written was no
longer a continuation of The Destiny Cade, but in fact, something mote akin to
a reference guide or textbook of sorts. It then seemed to make sense to continue
the book as an introductory text especially since in the years that I have been
teaching BaZi, there have been many requests from students fora textbook of
sorts to the subject. For those of you who have waited for the continuation to
The Destiny Code Revealed, rest assured that will be coming hot on the heels of
this book, which I have decided to name simply ‘The Ten God’.
It has been three years since I started writing this book and it has taken
this long simply because of the topic itself. The Ten Gods (shi shen “F#P) is
the bridge to accurate interpretation of a BaZi — without a grasp and good
knowledge of the Ten Gods, it is manifestly impossible co truly unlock any
Destiny Code.
My challenge in tackling this topic has been to write it in a manner that
is able to be instructional and educational, but withour being convoluted
and confusing. After all, an educational text is only as good as its ability
to keep the studene reading and information alone dees not make for
a good read. To that effect, this book has been actually rewritten some
three times, as | have sought to find a structure to the book that will
confusion.

Other challenges posed by this book were the lack of a precedent text and of
course, the topic itself, Whilsc there are many Chinese language BaZi books
‘on the subject of the Ten Gods, the information tends to be very fractured
and fragmented, with each book providing a different piece of the puzzle, and
in some eases, pieces of different puzzles! There is no single definitive Chinese
language tome on the subject of the Ten Gods, in the Chinese language. This is
of course, quite unlike the situation in Feng Shui, where there are a number of
Classics that are regarded as the definitive texts focused on a particular subject
such as Land Forms (Entering Earth Eye Classic and Snow Heart Classics)
or Water (Water Dragon Classics), Whilst there are books on BaZi thar have
attempted to cover the subject of the Ten Gods, there is no singular text on this
subject either. The lack of a precedent text has had the effect of throwing down
the gauntlet for me asan author, and I have decided to challenge myself to write
a definitive introduction to the Ten Gods,
What can I say? My Hurting Officer Star can't resist these types of challenges.
Then there is the topic of the Ten Gods. Oftentimes in class students ask me:
“Is there a textbook that we can buy that tells us everything about the Ten
Gods?” — my answer is invariably no. The subject matter of the Ten Gods is
vast — how vast? Well — how big is the universe?
“The Ten Gods" docs not, and will not, claim to tell you everything about the
‘Ten Gods. No book can do that because the concept of the Ten Gods is an
organic one ~ as our universe grows, and human beings as a civilisation add
new ideas and make new advancements, so the Ten Gods grow with us 100
years ago, there was no such thing as Twitter. Or an Avatar. So these ideas did
not exist within the realm of BaZi or the Ten Gods. Today, these ideas and
inventions exist, and so a space must be found for them in the Destiny Cade
universe. BaZis answer is not to add more Ten Gods, but to simply find that
within the Ten Gods that best expresses the core idea, concept or message within
these new advancements. The Ten Gods encompass all which no longer exists,
currently exists, and has yet to exist. It is through the Ten Gods that BaZi has
the ability to remain infinirely relevant. For students of BaZi who have taken a BaZi class, you may want to read this
book in a more relaxed fashion, zeroing in on a particular Ten God rather than
progressing through the chapters in the order in which they are presented. For
students of BaZi who are struggling with the concept of the Ten Gods, then a
more linear progression through this book is recommended.
1 would suggest a slow progression through this book rather than reading
through it all at one go. Read a chapter that interests you, give yourself some
rime to reflect on the ideas and principles within thar chapter, and the broader
ideas and principles about BaZi, before progressing forward. Try to apply some
of the thoughts and principles within the individual chapters on the Ten Gods
to your own chart or the charts that you have studied, before moving an to
the next chapter.
Giving this incredibly dynamic topic its due treatment and respect has been
the enduring challenge that [ have faced in writing this book. It is my hope
that I have not failed you, my readers, and have managed to convey to you the
breadth, depth and incredible adaptability of the Ten Gods.

This is the chart of a Xin 4 Metal Day Master. Water is the Output
Element for a Xin Metal Day Master since Metal produces Water in the
Five Elements Production cycle. The Eating God Star is represented by Gui
8§ Water whilst the Hurting Officer Star is represented by Ren & Water.
This chart however does not contain a drop of Water anywhere in the chart
So, this chart does not have any Eating God Star or a Hurting Officer
Star — it is entirely devoid of the Qutput Element. As such, this person will
not exhibit any of the qualities of the Eating God Star or Hurting Officer
Star.
Analysis:
Where the Output Element is missing, it has a pronounced effect on
the individual’s personality and communicative abilities, Individuals
without an Output Star in their chart will usually exhibit an extremely
bland personality, a sort of colourless, apathetic persona. At best, they
are individuals who go through life with a general absence of any kind of
opinion and are world-class bores. At worst, they are people who either get
bullied because they don't push back when they are pushed around or get
suckered easily. Either way, they are not people you want at your dinner
party unless your idea of a good dinner party is a table full of dullards.
‘These are people who could be given the world’s funniest dirty joke and
no one would laugh when they tell it. They have no sense of drama, dontB) Strength based on Rooting
In Chapter 2, the concept of Rooting is expansively discussed, Rooting is
an auxiliary method of evaluating Strength (meaning, it is used in tandem
with the Season method) but is also regarded as a secondary method for
determining Strength, An Element is regarded as Rooted if it appears in the
Stem and also in the Hidden Stems of the Earthly Branches.
‘Thus, if an Element is supported by Season AND Rooting in the
Earthly Branches, it will be considered definitively Strong, If however
the Element is not supported by the Season but is rooted, it can attain
the Strong classification from Rooting. Hewever, the Rooting method is
less straightforward and clearcut as a number of additional factors must
be taken into consideration when an Element is relying on the Rooting
method in which to attain a ‘Strong’ classification. The location of the
Element on the Stem (ie: it is in the Year, Month, Hour) or the Earthly
Branch in which the Element is relying on for Reoting are amongst the
factors considered.
With the Rooting method, something of a pecking order is created
within the Strong classification. Thus, when we evaluating the Strength
of an Element using Rooting (which recall, as indicated in Chapter
2, is essentially being used to ascertain the quality of an Element),
an clement can be classified as Superior, Good or Average quality. By
contrast, the Season method keeps things straightforward: an clement is
either Strong or Weak.
‘The examples that follow attempt to offer some idea of how to evaluate
the quality of the Ourput Element in a chart based 2 the Rooting
method. ‘These examples afford an idea of how to gauge the quality
of a Output Element in a chart and whether it is a Superior, Good or
Average quality Output Element using the Rooting method. In some
instances, the Season factor creeps into the evaluation, accordingly
it is not possible to ignore the Season of Birth when evaluating the
Strength of an Element using Rooting. Hence the emphasis on Rooting
an auxiliary method and secondary method of evaluating the Strength
of the Element.

This is a Geng SE Metal Day Master, born in the month of Snake 2
(Si). Snake is part of the season of Summer, when Fire dominates. Metal
produces Water in the Five Elements Production cycle so the Queput Stars
for this Geng Metal Day Master are represented by the element of Water.
‘The Output Star of this Geng Metal Day Master would be regarded as Weak
since element of Water is not supported by the Season of Birth. However,
the Ren Water located at the Year Stem is rooted in the Monkey ¥ (Shen)
Branch in the Day Pillar and also the Rat - (Zi) Branch in the Hour Pillar.
‘Thus whilst the Ousput Star in this chart is not considered strong by Season,
it is not entirely Weak either, since it is rooted in the Earthly Branches.
‘This chart also has a partial Three Harmony Combination that forms the
Water Frame of Monkey-Rat-Dragon 'P--F-& (Shen-Zi-Chen). Further,
the Ren £ Water in this chart is rooted in the Monkey which is the Growth
Star for Ren Water (see Chapter 2). As such, the Output Stars in this chart
would not be regarded as Weak - in actuality, the Output Star is of good
quality because of the rooting and the support the Water element receives
from the Growth Star and the combination. This is a Yi Z Wood Day Master, born in the Rooster & (You) month,
which is part of the season of Autumn. In Autumn, Metal is the strongest
and most dominant element. Wood produces Fire in the Five Elements
Praduction cycle so the Output Stars for this Yi Wood Day Master are
represented by the clement of Fite. This chart anly has Ding T Fire, and
no 9 Fire present. Ding Fire is the element with the same polarity as the
Day Master, and so represents the Eating God Star. This chart therefore
only contains the Eating God Star. Using a simple basic analysis, the Eating
God Star in this chart would be viewed as of average quality only = it is
not supported by season but it is rooted in the Sub-Qi of the two Goat
(Wei) Branches.
A more sophisticated and advanced analysis would interpret the Eating
God in this chart as Weak and poor quality rather than just average quality.
Although the Star is rooted in the Goat (Wei), the Goat (Wei) is the
Graveyard Branch for the element of Fire (see Chapter 2). As such, the Ding
Fire in this charts effectively using very weak Sub-Qias its rooting and for
this reason, would be regarded as a weak Eating God Star of poor quality.

‘This isa Wu 2 Earth Day Master, born in the month of Horse 4 (Wu).
Horse is part of the season of Summer, when Fire dominates. Earth
produces Metal in the Five Elements Production cycle so the Output Stars
for this Wu Earth Day Master are represented by the element of Metal. In
this chart, only Geng Metal is present so this chart only has an Eating
God Star. The Eating God Star in this chart is not supported by the Season
of Birth since Metal is the weakest in the Summer. However, the Geng
‘Metal in this chart is not decisively weak as ic is rooted in the two Monkey
Branches located in the Year and Hour Branches respectively. So whilst it
is not strong based on season, it would be regarded as moderately Strong
due to rooting.
Yer despite this, ona more advanced analysis, the Eating God Star in this
chart would not be considered of a good quality Eating God for several
reasons, First, there are multiple manifestations of the Eating God Star
within the chart — indeed, this chart would be regarded as having three
distinct Eating God Star manifestations in the form of Geng Shen AE #,
Geng Wu J and Jia Shen. F #, Secondly, the elements in the chare
around the Eating God Star are highly oppositional — the Geng Metal in
the Month Stem is opposed by the Jia Wood in the Year Stem and the Geng
Metal in the Monkey (Shen) is in a Clash formation with the Jia Wood in
the % (Yin) in the Month and Hour Branches.
‘The multiplicity of Eating God Stars, coupled with the fact that the Eating
God Stars are all facing ot affected by opposing Elements or Branches makes
this Eating God a deceptively good quality Eating God. In reality, this is not
a good quality Eating God Star at all, despite its Strengch.
18 The Tea Gods - The Output StareAnalysis:
When an Element is Weak, its influence and impact on the chart and on the
Day Master is mild at best. This means that the individual will not strongly
exhibit the qualities, traits and characteristics associated with the Star that
is represented by that Element, and will not have a strong affinity with the
matters and issues represented by that Element,
When an Element is Strong, its influence and impact on the chart and
on the Day Master is prominent. The individual’s behaviour, thoughts,
personality, actions and outloak will be dominated if not heavily influenced
by the Stars thar represent the element in their chart. They will also have a
strong affinity with the matters and issues represented by that Element.
In charts where the Output Element is Strong, this denotes an individual
whois full of ideas, highly creative, distinctly opinionated (although whether
ot not they voice it depends on which Output Star dominates) and an
expressive personality. They will have a uniqueness that separates them from
the rest of the common herd and they are always interesting (sometimes
provocatively so) people to be around, A strong Output Element denotes
good problem solving and innovation skills and a person who is a quick
learner, a great communicator and possesses a strong intellect.
When the urput Element is Weak, this can manifest in a variety of
negative outcomes. It may be the individual has lots of ideas, but the ideas
are half-baked. It may be the person has ideas but doesn't express these ideas
or opinions very well or in-a manner which truly captures the essence and
uniqueness of the thoughts. Sometimes if the Output Element is very weak,
the person may not even appear to have any opinions or ideas, even on the
simplest of matters,
The inability to express opinions or generate ideas and solutions should
be distinguished from apathy. Individuals with a weak Output Star are
nar necessarily apathetic — rather, it maybe that it requires a great deal of
effort for them to come up with an idea or they simply cannot be bothered,
to engage in the intellectual rigour chat is involved in coming up with an
opinion, Laziness rather than apathy is usually the reason for their bland,
un-inventive approach to anything,

Gui Water, whilst che Hurting Officer Star is represented by Ren <& Water.
This chare only has the Hurting Officer Stat, and no Eating God Stat, since
the only Water present in the chart, is the Rea Water found in the Sub-Qi
of the Monkey P (Shen). As such, this is an example of a chart which only
has a Hurting Officer Star, and no Eating God Stat.
Analysis:
When only the Hurting Officer Star is present in a chart, the qualities
associated with the Eating God Star will not shaw in the person's personality
of actions, By contrast, the qualities associated with che Hurting Officer
Star will exhibit particularly strongly:
The most basic interpretation of a chart where there is no Eating God
Star is that the person is an entirely extroverted personality. They are
outgoing, talkative, combative, argumentative and often like to provoke
people. They are most often impossible to shut up. They are also able
to respond quickly to changing trends (sometimes, they even kicl-stare
tends), think quickly on their feet, are street smart and critical thinkers.
Ovtpue StareDue to the absence of the Eating God Star, the person will however lack a +
long-term outlook on anything, and will very much be the kind of person #
wha lives for the NOW. %
When the Eating God Star is gin a chart entirely, the person will
not lack ideas or creativity but may lack well-formed, holistic ideas that ean
stand the test of time. They may lack the ability to express their thoughts
or ideas beyond the bare minimal — meaning, they are big picture people.
Typically their ideas or opinions or work-product is not informed by a
long-term outlook or a strategic outlook or the details. In extreme instances,
they have a tendency to react in a knee-jerk manner to a given situation and
make decisions that are unwise because they are unable to think five steps
beyond the existing situation.
Thus, the individual without an Eating God Star in their chart will be
attracted to opportunities in the workplace that are centered on immediate
or current advantages. They may tailor their skills or abil
demands of the current work-placeor focus their ideas or innovations or
creative endeavours on what the market wants now. The future is something
which they aren't too concerned about and is something that they will tackle
when the time comes
ities or ideas to the
As the Eating God Star relates to the ability to enjoy, appreciate and luxuriate
in the finer things in life, the absence of this Star usually denotes the person
lacks the ability to truly appreciate luxury and intellectualise it. A good way
to understand this difference is t0 use the subject of food. A person with
only a Hurting Officer Star can enjoy good food (although most often than
not, their opinion is disguised as appreciation) but the Eating God Star is
able to appreciate it, and be discerning. Think of the Hurting Officer Star
as a critical eater, whilst the Eating God Star is the informed critic,
Buc it is mot a crime to be extroverted, have an extremely outgoing
personality, be highly opinionated or to be a person wha lives for the now.
Certain job roles or creative ficlds, such as singing, acting, marketing,
advertising and public relations, do require individuals who can come up
with trend-setting ideas that capture the immediate imagination of the
public, but do not last the test of time. Whilst Hurting Officer types do
tend to experience more problems with communications or getting along
with people since they do tend to be in very in-your-face, they have their
own brand of personal charisma and appeal.
The Ten Gods - The Output Stars 137THE NEXT LEVEL: THE BIG PICTURE
ON OUTPUT
The concept of chart clarity is an important principle in BaZi. When a chart
is said to be iM or clear, this essentially means that there is no confusion
amongst the Stars. It is important that there is no confusion amongst the
Stars in a BaZi chart for the simple reason that confused stars lead to a
confused person, which leads w chaotic, unpredictable and uncertain
thoughts and action.
Naturally, there might be some people who take the view then thar it is
better to have EITHER the Hurting Officer Star or Eating God Star rather
than both. This way, the problem of clarity is resolved and there is no
confusion problem either. However, thar is an arguably simplistic manner
of looking at the concept of clarity.
A more sophisticated approach to the concept of clarity is caprured in the
idea that there are ideal positions or formations for a given Star within
a chart and the more a chart conforms to those ideals, the closer it is to
achieving a high level of clarity. The most simple expression of chart clarity
is the principle thar certain Stars should be seen (meaning, appear on the
Stem), whilst certain Sears have less of a need to be seen (meaning, they can
be Hidden in the Sub-Qi of Branches or are the Main Qi of a Branch).
‘The simplistic notion that having either one of the Ourput Stars is better
for clarity also ignores the fact that a chart should have BOTH the Hurting
Officer and Eating God Stars. This naturally throws up the question of shy
a chare needs both the Hurting Officer and Eating God Stars.
‘The reason lies in the fact that true talent and ability isn’t abour just being
a flash in the pan (Hurting Officer style), nor is it abour taking forever
to perfect your idea (Eating God style), You need to be able to mix the
ability to think fast, like che Hurting Officer, bur yer think holistically and
strategically, like the Eating Gad. Success requires the ability to see what
needs t0 be done NOW and yet appreciate that there are other matters on
the horizon that need consideration, In business parlance, having both the
Eating God and Hurting Officer is a case of ensuring that your business
has both a marketing department and a strategy department, Having both
these Stars together ensures that the individual is able to perceive immediate
needs, without sacrificing what needs to be done in the long-term, It means
the ability to have both short and long-term goals, Hurting Officer is power,
