Duringthe1890s,theunsanitaryworkingconditionsandlowwagesofthecoalminersindustryinVirden,Illinois
werecruelandinhumane.Therefore,theriotsandorganizationsthatweredevisedbytheworkerstoreformthe
standardsarejustified.

LaborershavewentthroughmanytoughdaysintheharshworkingconditionsoftheruggedminesinChicago.
Thestartofrebelliondidnotcomeuntilthenearbeginningofthe1900swhereoneofthedeadliestbattlesin
Virdenhappened.Coalminerswanttobetreatedbetterbyreceivinghigherwages,andsaferworking
environments.Theownerofthecompanydoesnotagree,andthecoalminersrebel.Beforethebattle,many
minersrallieduptoprotestandannouncethedemandsthattheyhopeforbutthecompanyoftheminesdecided
totakeanalternativerouteandhirestrikebreakers(peopleworkinginstrikes).Thebattlewasshortlived,lasting
onlyoneday.However,thiseventleadthecompanytoreevaluateandgivetheworkersamoresuitablecondition
toworkin.
