"Cariosa" Dance!
ID-2008-77c.JPG
The National Dance of the Philippines.
"Cariosa (IPA: [kariosa]) is a flirtatious Philippine group dance in the Maria Clara suite of Philippine folk dances
( http://home.netcom.com/~ntamayo/mariaclara.html ) where the fan or handkerchief plays an instrumental roll (sic: "role")
as it places the couple in a hard-to-get romance scenario. Despite popular belief, Cariosa has always been the national dance
of the Philippines, whereas the Tinikling is just a worldwide favorite." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cari%C3%B1osa )
Listen to the best version I could find of the "Cariosa" song/music as sung by "Tawag ng Tanghalan" song winner and
later an internationally acclaimed dramatic actress Ms. Nora Aunor courtesy of youngchriis21's "You Tube" entry:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdm74qZqurI&feature=related (unfortunately the video is not as good!). :-)

Dear Angel:
The basic 'Maria Clara' costume has a flowing full-length skirt with a detacheable triangular (as seen here) or square-cut 'tapis'
(perhaps its original purpose was to protect the skirt like an apron) tied or pinned over it; the blouse is usually square-necked
with flared 3/4 sleeves and lace or gathered layers of material stitched at the hem; a matching triangular 'panuelo' with similar
accents is worn over it, held together up front by a broachhttp://www.pbase.com/carinoza/image/98816976 .
Back in Year 8 (2nd year high school) I managed to make a full costume in just ONE DAY in time for the school's
much-awaited annual United Nations program that involved fellow students from multi-cultural backgrounds
presenting snipets of their cultural heritage through song, dance and even comedy skits! :-)
