Novel Study Layered Curriculum Project

DUE DATE: March 3RD


A LAYER: Vocabulary (10 points possible) Choose 10 points worth of activities; be sure to check the
point values of each one. Credit is earned for learning, which comes about through listening, writing,
discussion, reading and doing. You will be assessed using the rubric found on the wiki page.
1. _______ (5 points) Choose 15 words from the novel that you do not know; look up their definitions
and create flashcards. Learn them.
2. _______ (5 points) Create a Kahoot using 15 words from the novel. Make sure to print out your
questions if you are unable to share your kahoot with me!
3. _______ (5 points) Create a song/rap that correctly incorporates a total of 10 vocabulary words from
the novel. Their definitions should be clear from context of your song

B Layer (40 points possible). Choose 40 points worth of activities; be sure to check the point values of
each one. Credit is earned for learning, which comes about through listening, writing, discussion, reading and
doing. You will be assessed using the rubric found on the wiki page.
1. __________ (10 points) Develop interview questions you would use if you had the opportunity to interview
one of the characters. These should NOT be yes/no questions!! Include at least 10 questions that
are open ended!
2.___________ (15 points) Produce a soundtrack for the book. By selecting and listing songs and artists for
each section, briefly explain each choice (one or two sentences. Include at least 10 songs).
3.___________ (20 points) Recreate AND describe the setting for this novel. Include climate, weather,
landforms, population and any other elements of nature that would be found in this area. This
must be at least 4 paragraphs and include some sort of 3D visual representation.
4.___________ (10 points) Write a song/rap or poem about the book including literary elements,
foreshadowing, conflict, plot and theme (must be at least 1 page)! Think Flocabulary style!
5. ___________ (10 points) Create astrology signs for each character. After reading brief descriptions of the
astrology or sun signs, figure out which signs you think three of the main characters from your
book were born under. Write an explanation for each character about why you think they fit the
sign, drawing on their actions, attitudes, and thoughts from the book. Each explanation should be
at least 1 paragraph.
6.___________ (10 points) Perform #5 for the class OR another one of Mrs. Lyttles classes.
7.___________ (15 points) Make a collage, either digital or hand-drawn/painted/assembled of one of the
characters from the book that includes at least 5 direct quotes, 5 character traits and covers the
entire paper and/or canvas.

8.___________ (15 points) Draw/create a new cover for the book. Add a synopsis of the story on the back along
with at least 3 quote reviews from popular critics (quote reviews can be fictional and/or real).
9.__________ (15 points) Create the front page of a newspaper that covers the events that take place in the
novel. Be sure your writing has the tone of an article. Your newspaper should incorporate at least
5 vocabulary words (from layer A).
10. _________ (20 points) Create an actual functional board game that incorporates all the plot stages of the
novel. Your board game must include vocabulary; stem words, clear directions on how to play
and everything that is needed to play (pieces, board, cards, etc.). You must include at least 10
vocabulary/stem words.
11. ________ (10 points) Create an Instagram account for one of the characters. You must have at least 15 posts
with comments. Friend me @mizzlyttle and see how many followers you can get!
12. ________ (20 points) Create a comic book that retells the plot of the novel. Your comic book must include
at least 5 panels per page and must be at least 5 pages long. You can create this digitally or hand
draw it. The comic book must include all the stages of plot found within the novel. One year a
student did this and it spanned the entire hallway from Smiley to the media center! It was
amazing!!
13. ________ (10 points) Create a Facebook page for one of the characters from the novel. Their Facebook page
must include at least 6 photos, information regarding that characters birthday, relationship
status, social wall and newsfeed. Make sure the page is reflective of the character and paints a
full picture of that character.
14. ________ (15 points) Get creative and create a mobile illustrating 7 different literary aspects of the novel.
(plot stages, characterization methods, foreshadowing, conflict, theme, and setting). Make sure
you explain how each literary aspect is used within the novel being sure to give examples from
the text.
15. ________(?? Points) Have an idea that isnt listed on here? Write a 3-5 sentence proposal and turn it in to
me and well discuss it.

Remember this is due FRIDAY MARCH 3RD! We will have limited amounts of
class time to complete this project, make sure youre pacing yourself and working
at home.
