CELLS
Cells are the basic units of life. They carry out the three life processes:
nutrition, reproduction and sensitivity.
Living things are made up of cells. They can be unicellular (one single
cells) or multicellular (many cells).
What are cells like?
They are very small and we need a microscope to see them. Cells are
different in size (neurons are bigger than blood cells) and shape (round,
flat, elongated, etc.)
The parts of a cell
Membrane: It covers the cell.
Nucleus: It controls the function of the cell.
Cytoplasm: It is made up of water and organelles. The organelles carry out
different functions of the cell.
Animal and plant cells
Although animal and plant cells have three parts, they are different:
- Plant cells have a rigid wall around the membrane.
- Plant cells have chloroplasts to absorb sunlight.
- Plant cells are bigger than animal cells.

Cells work together at different levels of organization.
Tissues
Cells join together to form tissues. For example, animals have muscle tissue
formed by muscle cells.
Organs
Tissues join together to form organs and perform a common function.
For example, bones or lungs are animal organs and leaves and flowers are
plant organs.
Systems
Organs join together to form systems and perform a common function.
For example, muscles join together to form the muscular system and move
our body.
Organisms
Systems join together to form an organism, a living thing.
Cells, tissues, organs and systems work together so that the organism
functions correctly.
Unicellular living things just have a level of organization, the cell.

Animal tissues
Animals have different types of tissues.
o Bone tissue. It forms bones and supports the body.
o Muscle tissue. It performs the movement.
o Blood tissue. It transports substances along the body.
o Nervous tissue. It transports information to the brain and
messages to all the body.
o Fat tissue. It stores fat.
o Epithelial tissue. It forms the skin and protects the body.
Plant tissues
Examples of tissues in a tree:
o Dermal tissue. It covers and protects the leaves and young
stems.
o Ground tissue. It stores nutrients and performs
photosynthesis.
o Vascular tissue. It transports substances through the xylem
and phloem vessels.
