Once upon a time …
This is how many of the famous fairy tales of the Brothers
Grimm begin. More than 200 years ago, the famous
brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm lived in Kassel and
often explored the region on foot. In order to compile
their fairy tale and legend collections, they often travelled
across Northern Hesse to hear the tales, which were
only orally transmitted at that time. The first volume of
the Children’s and Household Tales was published in
1812. Henceforth, the Grimm’s fairy tales became very
popular all over the world. The world of fairy tales
and legends is still alive in many places. In the Sleeping
Beauty Castle Sababurg, on the Mother Hulda Mountain
“Hoher Meißner”, in the lovely village of Snow White,
Bergfreiheit, near Bad Wildungen or in the Little Red
Riding Hood‘s Country.

The 51 km dream route runs through the highland scenery of the fabled
Burgwald, bordered by the rivers Lahn and Eder. It connects the Lahn-Dill-
Bergpfad and the Elisabethpfad in the university town of Marburg with the
city of Frankenberg (Eder) via the special paths Stirnhelle and Christenberg.
Awarded with the German Excellent Hiking Path Seal
The hiking path with the German Excellent Hiking Path Seal leads to the
most impressive scenic and cultural highlights, from one of the best views
of the region to the next. On the way through the deep Burgwald, one of
the largest unbroken forest areas in Germany, quiet
glades, mysterious bogs with cotton grass and
sundew, bubbling springs, reflecting ponds,
magnificent castles and the Celtic-Frankish
Christenberg with its Romanesque church
are located right in the forest middle.
Museums, historic picnic areas and carriage
roads of Hessian landgraves bear testimony
to the past lives of the inhabitants and
explain the ancient names of the idyllic places.
On the way forward towards Frankenberg, the river
Eder also runs through the forested slopes of Eder-
stede.
The linking of the incomparable scenery with a rich
history turns the Burgwaldpfad into an unforgettable
experience.

It is a path for all senses. From the valley of the wild
Nuhne to the heights of the Salzlachenkopf and back
down into the silent alluvial plain, the nature paints

constant companion.

You must first go a long way ahead and then you will be
rewarded with stunning panoramic views. Old orchards,
an old cultural landscape, the Schneitelwald, and

Extra tour “Lindenhardt” (12 km)
Start: Game reserve in Battenberg / Dodenau
It goes up to the Kleudelburg, which was built as a
hunting camp under Landgrave Ernst Ludwig of Hesse-
Darmstadt. After a walk around the Lindenhardt, with
its old coppices, you follow spectacular serpentine
loop roads down to the atmospheric Edertal.

The path runs close to the edge of the Ederklippe, to
the Stedefelsen. Deep down you will see the stony river
bed of the Eder, which seems to murmur softly. Enjoy

It is the path of surprises. It is an encounter with the
famous Nuhne geese, an adventurous ford-crossing,
an enchanted, black pond or the observation of

Hiking de luxe
The nature park Kellerwald-Edersee is located in the wooded Northern Hesse
and impresses with its wide, natural beech forests and a peasant cultural
landscape with meadows full of various flowers and idyllic villages.
Imbedded in the deep forests, the clear, the blue-green Edersee winds with
its various swimming and water sports facilities. Jungle remains, which
are the last in Europe, grow on its steep, warm hillsides. The crippled tree
forests with funny tree forms are a unique experience.

Cultural treasures, such as rocky mounds, Celtic ring walls in the Hohe
Keller, long extinct, charcoal stack plates, the imposing Waldeck castle
overlooking the Edersee and the Cistercian monastery Haina give a
review of the rich history of the region.

The nature park offers ideal hiking conditions in any season, and is the
backdrop of two quality paths: Kellerwaldsteig and Urwaldsteig lead to the
fabulous places in the park. Half-day and whole day trips complete the

bination of fabulous hiking and fantastic spa opportunities.

Nature and Culture – inimitably interwoven
Anyone wishing to experience the varied beauty of the nature park Kellerwald-
Edersee should walk through the Kellerwaldsteig.
On a distance of 158 km, the loop road, certified by the German Hiking
Association, connects the forested landscapes of the Edersee through the
rolling hills on the highlands of Wildungen up to the Hoher Keller.
All sights in the 400-square-kilometer nature reserve and the centrally im-
bedded national park Kellerwald-Edersee are located on the walking route.
Enjoy the Edersee with its clean, clear water, the quaint stunted
forests in the north, the imposing beech trees in the national
park, idyllic villages with inviting country inns and
especially the forest, field and grass fields in the south,
which are so popular among hikers.

The wide, sometimes seemingly mysterious, forest land-
scape of the nature park with ancient castles and monas-
teries is the backdrop for fairy tales and legends. Legend
has it that Snow White comes from Bad Wildungen.
She had found refuge with the dwarfs in Bergfreiheit.
And even today, the “white woman” still haunts between
Hüddingen and Alberthausen.
The regional cuisine with tasty farm products completes

Wilderness Experience
On one’s own initiative into the wilderness experience – hiking in the
unique national park of Hesse, in the realm of rustic beech trees, is
a very special experience. Here, on an area of 57 km2, you will
find one of the largest contiguous protected natural beech forests
in Europe: Nature should remain Nature! The deep forests provide
for unique nature experiences all-the-year. Selected half-day tours
guide to the treasures of the national park with world heritage
ambition. They lead past enchanted beech trees and purest sources
via enchanted meadow valleys and along stoned hillsides
to stunning views and down to the Edersee. And they all lead
into a fascinating wilderness.

In the realm of the Boggels

The 14 paths start at designated parking areas. Each route is associated
to an animal or plant symbol – very simple! “Wilderness experience
with all senses” is the motto and “Immerge into the silent ocean of

The Uplandsteig opens up a mountainous world with all its beauty
around the four seasons destination Willingen. Enjoy pleasure hiking here
“with all associated activities: firm slopes, secluded forest paths, fragrant

On tour with the whole family
The Diemelsteig crosses the scenic nature park Diemelsee. Traditional large
pasture landscapes with sparkling streams, picturesque villages with
Romanesque village churches, and breathtaking panoramic views charac-
terize the 63 km long, mostly natural path. Götz von Berlichingen, the ruffian
with the iron hand, already rode between the Diemel Hills. The predomi-
nantly gentle slopes of the graceful rolling hills make the exciting, light path
to a rich experience for the whole family.

From Heringhausen, it goes steeply up to the St. Muffert cliff with its bizarre
forest landscapes. You can look down to the blue-green Diemelsee.
Through meadows, fields and forests, the ascending and descending path
leads to the lookout Winterscheid, at almost 600 m altitude. From here,
you can have a view of the highest mountains of the Upland and the Sauer-
land. In Willingen-Hemmighausen, the Diemelsteig joins the Uplandsteig.
Hiking experts can connect both quality paths to an
approx. 115 km long round hiking tour. In the course
of the road, the 738 m high Dommel with obser-
vation tower, which offers a wonderful panora-
mic view of the living skittles down to the
Sauerland and Waldecker Land, is worth a
detour. After the localities of Stormbruch and
Bontkirchen, at the foot of the barrier wall,
the path strongly goes up again to the 600 m
high Eisenberg and leads to the St. Muffert
cliff again.

Fairy Tale Route
Anyone who hikes on the approx. 400 km long Fairy Tale Route, walks on a
trail of fairy tales and legends. From Bad Karlshafen to Kaufungen and
from Wolfhagen to Hann. Münden, the trail winds through dense magic
forests, crossing bizarre rock formations and enchanted castle ruins.
Old legends tell of giants and dwarves, and Sleeping Beauty would have
certainly enjoyed her 100-year sleep in Sababurg Castle. The fairy tale
route is divided into 31 stages, suitable for half-day and full-day tours.

Exploration of art and nature

ARS NATURA, an art project that is unique in Germany, guarantees fabulous
hiking and enjoyment of art. On more than 200 kilometres, 240 artworks
situated along the hiking paths X8 and X3 form a gallery in the wild.
The works produced from organic materials are related to nature and places.
Major places and traces of the history of human life are revived. Nature is
put in the limelight.
Many sections of ARS NATURA deal with a specific topic, such as Mother
Hulda and the enchanted forest of the Werra Valley. Discover the charm of
this art trail alone, or on a guided art tour. And the interaction and varia-
bility of this art project in open space is particularly noticeable on a second
hiking tour. Each visit is different. Note: ARS NATURA is also one of the
“365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas 2010”.

The wolf is waiting in the thicket …

No, there are no wolfs in the Knüll Mountains. However, in the Wildlife Park
Knüll it lives in exciting companionship with a bear and many other animals,
which attract both children and adults. Anyone who wants to explore the
Knüll region in the Little Red Riding Hood‘s Country should hike on the pre-
mium paths. It opens up the wooded, hilly landscape on narrow paths with
often unexpected, spectacular views.

Lochbachpfad (8.5 km)

Start: Wallenstein
The wild and romantic Lochbach Flume with its hole falls, is the highlight
of this round trip. It is crossed by wooden bridges and footbridges and
surrounded by a jungle of ferns. What a great experience.

Hutewaldweg (11.4 km)

An ancient pastoral forest with bizarre giant trees put you in times
when the pigs were driven to the mast through the woods. The

Hiking on the volcano

The Vogelsberg is a huge extinguished volcanic field – the
largest basaltic massif in Central Europe. In the era of
the late Tertiary, it was very hot here. The wild-looking
landscape has always inspired many people. The
numerous rock formations have particularly inspired
many myths and legends. Thus, legend has it that the
blocks of stones at the Taufstein were created by giants,
who pelted with stones. It is said that the Germanic
Gods Odin, Thor and Tyr guard a precious treasure under
the Geiselstein, and that the witch Else walks abroad
at the Bilstein.
The Hoher Vogelsbeg is a water-rich region. Booming
rivers have their source here, and wind through the
land of a thousand hedges with colourful mountain
meadows, orchards, and pastures. Unforgettable clear
views open up along the sides and from the individual
hilltops, the remains of small volcanoes, on which
half-timbered villages or towns are located. Castles,
mills and ponds, medieval towns and archaeological
finds, such as the Celtic princely graves at Glauberg,
bear witness of an eventful history.

burial site, is made accessible from Mainz to Fulda as
St. Boniface Route.
During the summer months on weekends and public
holidays the Vulkan-Express buses increase their service
times and connect the Nature Protection Information Cen-
tre with leisure areas and the three adventure paths at
the Hoherodskopf (764 m), with the surrounding areas.

Taking the bus to the hiking trail

You can spend a wonderful hiking week on the 125-km
long premium loop trail in the in the nature park Hoher
Vogelsberg Nature Park, the Vulkanring-Vogelsberg. If
you have a free day, you can experience the Vogelsberg
on a total of eight extra tours (five of them are described
here). They have a length from 9 to 19 kilometres, and

Summit Tour Schotten (14 km)

Start: Hoherodskopf

Hiking on the volcano: the second highest peak in the park, the Hoherods-
kopf, past the trout ponds, and the lush meadows in spring and summer
months, and past the Gackerstein, to finally reach the Eichelbachtal. Halfway,
a cosy inn invites you to rest. All peaks are superb vantage points. High-
lights include the magnificent view from the Schottenblick to the west, over
the Valley of Nidda and the nearly 360-degree views from the plate (before
the descent to Busenborn). The path leads back to the Hoherodskopf,
via the chiselled Bilstein hilltop with fantastic views of the Taunus and the
skyline of Frankfurt.

Rock Tour Herbstein (19 km)
Start: Herbstein, Kolping holiday village
Boulders of all sizes, lava solidified to basalt, are the
main themes of this tour. The trail opens up three
major basalt eruptions. From the Diebstein (individual
rocks), the path leads forward to the Burgfrieden
(block field) and finally to the Felsenruhe, a basalt
eruption, which looks like a big rock face. In between,
there are lovely meadow landscapes, lakes and
beautiful views, as well as historic landmarks along
the path. The Lanzenhain trail allows you to cross
a typical Vogelsberg village after 12 kilometres. You
can rest here at noon in the inn “Zum Oberwald“.
The city of Herbstein (Spa) itself is located on one of
the rocks, which overcame a former vent of the
weathering. In the volcano spa with sauna, tired limbs
become fit again.

The moated castle is a court estate from the 12th century, which was used for agriculture
until the middle of the 20th century. After years of vacancy and decay, it was renovated as a

Wer den Märchenwald der Brüder Grimm sucht, wird in
der Mitte Deutschlands am ehesten fündig: der mächtige
über 20.000 ha große Reinhardswald im Weserbergland mit
seinen imposanten Eichenalleen, verwunschenen Buchenlich-
tungen und bis zu 1.000 Jahre alten Baumrecken gilt zu recht als
das »Schatzhaus europäischer Wälder« und ist eine verwunschene
Waldlandschaft gleich den Schauplätzen in den weltberühmten
Grimm’schen Märchen oder ihren Deutschen Sagen.
Das Herz dieser einzigartigen Natur- und Kulturlandschaft
ist der kleine Ort Sababurg, wo sich gleich drei Attraktionen
entdecken lassen: Das über 675 Jahre alte Dornröschenschloss
Sababurg, das Märchenschloss der Brüder Grimm; der Tierpark
Sababurg, Europas älteste zoologische Anlage von 1571 und
das Naturschutzgebiet Urwald Sababurg, Deutschlands erstes
Waldnaturschutzgebiet von 1907.
Das Dornröschenschloss Sababurg wird heute von Familie
Koseck als weltoffener Ort gehobener Gastlichkeit betrieben
und beherbergt ein kleines romantisches Hotel, ein Restaurant
mit Café, ein Standesamt und das SabaBurgTheater. Der
historische Burggarten mit Brüder-Grimm-Denkmal oder
der Märchenrundgang laden zur Besichtigung ein.
