Welcome! I am very excited to share my love for languages with you this semester. Learning Spanish can give
you a competitive edge as you prepare to enter into college and choose a career. I am looking forward to
watching you use Spanish and enjoy communicating with each other.
By the end of this course you will be able to do the following (and more!) in Spanish:
- Talk about the school day, your classes, which extracurricular activities and sports you participate in.
- Talk about your morning routine and how you get ready for a special event.
- Describe clothing and react to prices, styles and fit while shopping.
- Talk about errands you would do in the community.
- Give and follow driving instructions.
- Talk about your childhood: what you liked to do, what your favorite toys and activities were.
Spanish 2: Spanish 2 is a rigorous continuation of Spanish 1. This semester you will learn approximately 500 new words
and go much deeper into the structure/grammar of the Spanish language. Your goal for being here is either a) to prepare
yourself to proceed to Honors Spanish III (highly suggested for college candidates!) or b) to complete your obligation to
the curriculum pathway required for college admission.
Grading Policy:
Students will be assessed using a total points system on a variety of tasks including quizzes, tests, projects, class
assignments/homework and an individual portfolio focusing on four major skills areas of reading, writing, listening,
and speaking. Grades will be updated/posted weekly in PowerSchool. Interim reports will be sent home every 4
weeks in order to properly monitor student progress. Student work submitted after the due date will be penalized 10
percent per day up to no lower than 60 percent. Late work will not be accepted after the interim cut-off dates:
Quarter 3: February 23 & March 2; Quarter 4: May 4 and June 2.
Course Grade: 1st quarter: 40%; 2nd quarter: 40%; Final Exam: 20%
Course Materials:
- A binder exclusively for Spanish (I recommend at least a 1 -inch binder)
- 4 dividers labeled Do Now; Vocabulary; Homework; Class Notes
- Loose leaf paper
- Pens/Pencils/Highlighters
- A dry erase marker and sock to erase mini white boards
- Access to your Wake County School email so you can join Google Classroom
Expectations:
The four skills: applying and practicing the four skills of language acquisition is critical for your advancement. Tasks,
assignments and tests will be administered to gauge your progress in speaking, listening reading and writing.
Immersion: Research shows that immersion in a language is the most effective way to learn. I will teach this class using
as much Spanish in instruction as possible for the benefit of the students.
Homework: For most units will be given in the form of a tic-tac-toe format where you can choose 5 out of 9 assignments.
When you complete more than 5 assignments you will earn an extra credit point, up to 4 points per unit. No other extra
credit opportunities will be provided, so take advantage of it. Homework may vary from the tic-tac-toe format as deemed
appropriate.
Translators/Plagiarism: STRICTLY prohibited. The use of translators is equivalent to copying someone elses paper; it
is simply not your work and does not demonstrate what YOU know (and is often incorrect!). Evidence of ANY breach of
academic integrity (sharing homework, copying on tests or quizzes, or using a translator (including Google) will be
handles according to the honor code.
Additional Expectations:
- Respect yourself and others at all times!! (This includes space, time, personal belongings, etc.)
-Be kind to and supportive of your classmates as you all learn this new language.
-Arrive on time and have a positive attitude. Sit in your assigned seat before the bell rings.
-Come to class prepared with your materials and be ready to work.
-Take responsibility for your own actions.
-NO food, drinks, or gum allowed!
- NO Cell phones/ear buds
TELEPHONE /ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY: Per the RHS Student Handbook: Use of cell phones and
other electronic devices is prohibited at all times during the instructional period, unless teacher directed.
Students are allowed to use their devices during the lunch period only. If a student violates this
policy, student will have their phone confiscated and they will be able to have a parent/guardian come to the
main office to pick it up at the end of the day. IF for any reason whatsoever a student arrives to my classroom
with their cellphone in hand, ALL telephones, earbuds, headphones, and electronic devices MUST
be put away out of sight (ie: backpack) BEFORE any student enters the classroom. If at any time
the item becomes visible (even if the student is not using it), it will be confiscated and turned in
to Mrs. Davenport at the Front Desk for parent pick up only. This is non-negotiable. Students
refusal to surrender device will result in a referral.
Extra Help:
I am available to stay after school on Tuesdays from 2:40 3:20 if you are struggling and would like tutoring. Let me
know in advance so I know that youre coming. Please be picked up by 3:20 at the latest!
The best way to benefit from this is to come prepared with questions and identify sooner than later when you need help!
Do not wait until the day before the test to ask for help!
