The Shakespearean novel Romeo and Juliet takes place during the Renaissance
between the fourteenth and fifteenth century. The setting of the novel takes place at Verona and
Mantua northern Italy. In this time period it was a regular thing for people to get married at a
young age, for example, starting from age 13 up. Most marriages were arranged by the families
of both and the couple didnt have a say. Some define love as being their for someone else
through the hardships and positive moments in both of the persons lives. Romeo loves Juliet
because his actions in the beginning, middle, and end of the novel are only of someone who is
truly in love.
In the beginning of the novel, in (Shakespeare page 57 and 59), Romeo shows his love at
first sight by immediately after talking with Juliet for some time, kissing her twice. This is a
perfect sign that shows that Romeo is in love. What other time would you see one person kissing
someone else on their lips other than love. Another quote is If profane with my unworthiest
hand, this holy shrine, the gentle sin is this: My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to
smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.(Shakespeare 57). This shows that even without
knowing much if anything about her, he is in love, and later he even marries her within 48 hours
(Shakespeare pg 83 Act 2 scene 3). This may seem bogus when first read, however when people
are in love they make very unusual decisions almost as if they are drunk.
Within the middle of the storyline Romeo tends to show his love by doing everything he
can to meet with Juliet. He tresspasses on private property to get to her on her balcony and says
Let me be taen; let me be put to death. I am content (p.157) He accepts Juliets plan to meet
with him in the graveyard even though losing contact with his family could result in loss of titles
and most of the wealth the he enjoyed while in Verona (you dont go to fancy parties without
being part of an important family.

Reviewing the ending of Romeo and Juliet these last couple of acts show the feelings
Romeo has for Juliet strongly. The most famous part of this novel is also the biggest amount of
evidence of his love for her. ...Heres to my love. [Drinking.] O true apothecary, Thy drugs are
quick. Thus with a kiss I die. (Shakespeare pg 227). Only if you are truly in love you are willing
to die for another person. If they werent in love he wouldnt have killed himself. Throughout the
book over and over he declares his love and describes her in ways of a goddess.

Other's have different opinions that Romeo doesnt love Juliet. It could be seen that
Romeo is basing his love on Juliet being attractive. To quote the book: O, [Juliet] doth teach the

torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night. Beauty too rich for use, for
Earth too dear...Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight, For I neer saw true beauty till
this night (Shakespeare pg. 53 Act 1 Scene 5). This quote clearly states Romeo feeling love
but he seems to just be attracted to Juliets physical appearance. Howeverthis reasoning is
flawed because once Romeo meets Juliet he finds that he does actually love Juliet for who she is
and not just because shes attractive or voluptuous. This is seen after the party when Romeo
says: Can I go forward when my heart is here? Turn back, dull earth, and find thy center out.
(Shakespeare pg. 65 Act 2 Scene 1).
To conclude, romeo may seem to be some guy who follows girls like stray dogs and only
likes them because they are attractive, however, deep inside, in the text there are multiple
accounts of him actually loving juliet such as when he is willing to die for juliet. Majority of
people in this world are only willing to set their life down for another person only if they are
very close and if it is the most ethical thing. Romeo does love Juliet and setting his life down for
her makes everyone including Romeo realize how much indeed he actually loves Juliet.
There are a few inconsistencies in your writing. Much of what you have written seems better
suited for arguing that Romeo did not love Juliet. Even so, there are many times when you do
not adequately break down a quote you used or explain its importance. Those are things we can
work on. 33/40
