Nursing Responsibilities

if irregular heartbeat, dyspnea,
swelling of hands and feet and
hypotension occurs.
Inform patient that angina attacks
may occur 30 min. after
administration due reflex
tachycardia.

ciprofloxacin. They could make the
medication less effective.
Tell patient that Ciprofloxacin can
cause side effects that may impair
his thinking or reactions. Tell patient
to be careful if he plans to drive or
do anything that requires him to be
awake and alert.
Instruct patient to take ciprofloxacin
with a full glass of water (8 ounces).
Instruct patient to avoid taking
antacids, vitamin or mineral
supplements, sucralfate (Carafate),
or didanosine (Videx) powder or
chewable tablets within 6 hours
before or 2 hours after you take
ciprofloxacin. These other
medicines can make ciprofloxacin
much less effective when taken at
the same time.
Inform patient that Ciprofloxacin
may cause swelling or tearing of a
tendon (the fiber that connects bones
to muscles in the body), especially

in the Achilles' tendon of the heel.


These effects may be more likely to
occur if you are over 60, if you take
an oral steroid medication, or if you
have had a kidney, heart, or lung
transplant.
Instruct patient to stop taking
ciprofloxacin and call the doctor at
once if he has sudden pain, swelling,
tenderness, stiffness, or movement
problems in any of your joints. Also
instruct patient to rest his joint until
he receive medical care or
instructions.

3.) Levofloxacin

maxillary sinusitis, acute
bacterial exacerbation of
chronic bronchitis,
community-acquired
pneumonia, nosocomial
pneumonia,
uncomplicated skin and
skin structure infections,
complicated and
uncomplicated urinary
tract infection (UTI) and
acute pyelonephritis.

Nausea, diarrhea, headache,


dizziness, insomnia,
musculoskeletal effects,
pain, reddening of the
infusion site, phlebitis,
increase in liver enzymes,
eosinophilia, leukopenia,
asthenia, fungal overgrowth
and proliferation of other
resistant microorganisms.
Eye irritation, eyelid
itching, shock-like
symptoms. Hypersensitivity,
corneal lesion.

Lab tests: Do C&S test prior to


beginning therapy and periodically.
Withhold therapy and report to
physician immediately any of the
following: Skin rash or other signs
of a hypersensitivity reaction, CNS
symptoms such as seizures,
restlessness, confusion,
hallucinations, depression; skin
eruption following sun exposure;
symptoms of colitis such as
persistent diarrhea; joint pain,
inflammation, or rupture of a
tendon; hypoglycemic reaction in
diabetic on an oral hypoglycemic
agent.
Patient & Family Education
Learn important indications for
discontinuing drug and immediately
notifying physician.
Consume fluids liberally while
taking levofloxacin.
Allow a minimum of 2 h between
drug dosage and taking any of the
following: Aluminum or magnesium
antacids, iron supplements,
multivitamins with zinc, or
sucralfate.

Avoid exposure to excess sunlight or


artificial UV light.
Avoid NSAIDs while taking
levofloxacin, if possible.
Do not breast feed while taking this
drug.
