CSE40418: Advanced Structural Analysis

5th Tutorial:
Question 5.1: A two-storey shear frame building has an interior substructure supported on its
first floor as shown below. The mass of the first floor is 2m and the mass of the second floor is
m. The mass of the interior substructure is m/2. The lateral stiffness of each column at the first
storey is 2k and the lateral stiffness of each column at the second storey is k. The lateral stiffness
of the support for the interior substructure is k/2. The structure is subjected to a harmonic force
P2 (t ) P0 sin t at the second floor only. Determine the steady-state dynamic response {x} =
{x1 x2 x3}T for the damped vibration of the system with the provided natural frequencies 1,
2, 3, the provided modal damping ratios 1, 2, 3 which satisfy the Rayleigh damping
assumption, and the provided modal shapes as shown below.

Question 5.2: Estimate the fundamental natural frequency of a five-storey shear frame as
shown in the figure assuming the shape function obtained from static deflections due to lateral
forces equal to floor weights W=mg. As shown in the figure, the static deflections due to lateral
W
forces equal to floor weights have been determined as u 5 9 12 14 15T .

Question 5.3: A rigid, massless bar of length 2L as shown below has a pinned joint at its left
end and is supported by a spring with stiffness k and a damper with damping coefficient c. A
mass m is lumped at mid-span. Taking the deflection at the free end as the generalized
coordinate, determine the undamped natural frequency (Hz), the damping ratio and the damped
natural frequency (Hz) for vibration of the concentrated mass m. Assume small oscillations.

Question 5.4: Consider the cantilever structure shown below, which has distributed mass m
per unit length and constant flexural rigidity EI. A concentrated mass m is also supported at the
top. A linear viscous damper with damping coefficient c is transversely connected to the
1215 EI
structure at the top, while distributed springs with stiffness coefficient k
per unit
31L4
length are transversely connected to the structure at the locations of L/3 to 2L/3 from the fixed
end. The structure is subjected to a uniformly distributed force F0 (t ) along the whole length
and a concentrated force F (t ) at the top. Assume a deflected shape given by ( x) ( x / L) 2 .
Using the transverse deflection at the top as the generalized coordinate, derive the generalized
mass M * , the generalized stiffness K * , the generalized damping C * and the generalized force

F * (t ) ; establish the equation of motion for transverse vibration of the structure; and determine
the natural frequency.
