BEFORE THE SINGING

WINE

What you do or consume

BEFORE singing matters!

For example, many assume they sing better after some alcohol, but the
opposite is true. While alcohol can help you relax before performing,
alcohol can also cause dehydration, abnormal mucous production &
numbness which can affect the muscle coordination of our vocal cords.
Alcohol also affects our breathing, which is important in singing. So ideally,
alcohol is to be avoided before a singing performance, although the
effects will vary from one individual to another.
Here are other food & substances to avoid:

DROP YOUR JAW

For better vocal projection
When the jaw is not dropped enough, the voice sounds much softer,
muffled or squashed.
Sing with an open mouth (jaw lowered) and keep the back of your throat
open. Emphasise on the vowels instead of the consonants.
For example when singing the word Love:

Sing: Luuuuuuuuuughv
Not: Luvvvvvvvvvvvvv.
Practice keeping your mouth open as you sing in the mirror:

SIGH
To prevent your voice from cracking
Dont we just hate it when the voice suddenly cracks as we are trying to
sing louder & higher?
To avoid vocal breaks, add a sigh to the parts of your voice where you feel
like your voice wants to crack/flip.
Usually the voice cracks because the larynx (Adams apple) is raised as we
change from our chest voice into our head voice (the lighter voice).
While singing, sighing can help lower a high-raised larynx, and prevent the
voice from cracking!

High larynx

Neutral larynx

THINK PRESS DOWN

To hit and sustain high notes wihout straining
High notes are hard to sing and sustain when we use unnecessary muscles
and dont allow the voice to shift into the head resonance.
This often happens when we think of reaching the notes and end up
pulling the chest voice up while stretching our chin upwards.
When going for the higher notes, instead of reaching for those notes,
think of pressing down into them instead and keep your chin
parallel to the ground.

OTHER THINGS TO DO:

CHOOSE THE RIGHT KEY

If the song you want to sing is sung by an artiste of the opposite sex, for
guys, you might want to drop the keys one or two semitones, and for
ladies, switch the keys up one or two semitones. However, this is
entirely unnecessary if you master the 3 tips above.

KEEP YOURSELF
HYDRATED

Drink lots of water not just on the day youre going to perform or hours
before. Do it a few days before as itll take time for the water you consume
to keep your vocal cords well hydrated.

WARM-UP

Before singing, do some humming. Hum from the lowest to your highest
notes, up and down continuously for 5 - 10 minutes to make sure your
vocal cords are nice and limber for the singing youre going to do.

AT THE END OF THE DAY,

ITS MOST IMPORTANT TO HAVE FUN!
Start your practising now, and when the karaoke day comes, just let go &
enjoy yourself. HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!
