My Current Goals
From kindergarten to fifth grade I loved reading books. I was taught to read a book, take
the AR test on the computer, and see how many points you get. This made reading exciting
because I was rewarded if I receive a certain number of points. Since elementary school, I was
taught how to write papers using the five-body paragraph format. In middle school, my thoughts
about reading and writing went downhill. Teachers began to redirect my writing by teaching me
how to write argumentative and research essays. This was the time peer editing was introduced.
One day, my class had a peer editing session that changed my thoughts about writing. The person
who edited my paper only focused on the bad things on my paper. The person did not give any
positive feedback or suggestions. It made me feel like everything about my paper was wrong. I
felt like since the person was correcting all my mistakes, I must be a poor writer. This stuck with
me until now. When I began UWRT 1101, I struggled. The professor did not focus on teaching
students how to find research to construct into an essay. I was instructed to summarize articles
assigned for homework. I was directed on how to critically read articles and how to reflect on
them. I was taught how to reflect on my previous pieces of writing. That type of writing was new
to me.

In UWRT 1101, I was taught student learning outcomes. The terms were literacy,
discourse communities, critical reading, composing process, and a few more. Those are the terms
the professor focused on the most. My UWRT 1101 professor did not mention rhetorical
knowledge too often. I have the definition of rhetorical knowledge, but I struggle using this word
to reflect on previous pieces of writing. I believe that is why the term is not as clear to me as the
others. I want to improve on my composing process to writing in UWRT 1102. For example,
when it comes to writing assignments I never sit down and brainstorm my writing. The first thing
I start thinking is what I start to type. I continue this process by taking short breaks to read over
my paper. I always thought this would help with catching careless mistakes, but that method is
not too effective.
My goals for this semester is to stop procrastinating, have a better outcome in all my
classes, and become more social. I started procrastinating in middle school and now it has
become a habit. Waiting until the last minute to do an assignment puts me under pressure. I have
the option of doing the assignment or quit. I assume the pressure helps me focus more. I believe I
procrastinate because I still earn good grades on my work. So why stop now? I have decided I
need to work on my procrastination habit because more of my time is consumed now. When I
was younger, I had all the time in the world. Now, I am a full-time college student, have two
jobs, and participate in different organizations on campus. I do not have the spare time I had
before to complete my assignments at the last minute. Last semester, my procrastination habit
began to stress me. I believe procrastination interfered with my class performance. Toward the
end of last semester, I was doing all I could to maintain or earn a certain grade when I could have
done that the whole semester. I have always been the introvert type. It takes a while for me to
open up and feel comfortable with others. When people speak to me, I have difficulties with

trying to hold a conversation. I do not have many associates, so most of the time I do things
alone or do nothing. This is only my second semester in college. I hope as time pass, I begin to
push myself out my comfort zone.
My goal sticker is a quote from Abraham Lincoln that say Things may come to those
who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle. This quote is related to procrastination. I
mentioned earlier in my paper how procrastination has become a habit. Now, in my second
semester of college, I want to try to break it or at least begin to improve on my habit. I believe
this quote can help me improve my procrastination habit because it will remind me how much
competitive college is and getting a job in my field after I graduate can be difficult. If I slack, the
position I may want could be taken because whoever wanted it more got it first. It motivates me
to achieve my work earlier in time. Many things can cause obstacles from me achieving my
goals. Procrastination is a routine for me. It can be difficult to break routines. I could over
estimate how much time I have to complete an assignment. I could try another method on how I
accomplish my work, but it is not guaranteed it will help me improve my performance in class. I
could become too focused with my jobs and organizations. Hopefully, I can remain focus
throughout the semester and if I do stumble over an obstacle or two, I steer myself back to the
right path.
