"Effects of Physical Activity on Cartilage Development in Healthy Kids." British Journal
of Sports Medicine, p. 382. http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/37/5/382.short
The editorial speaks of how cartilage development is a huge contributing factor when it
comes to children being healthy. It speaks not only on how studies have proven that
cartilage development helps in children but also in animals. Bone density of a child is very
important and should not be overlooked or even forgotten. The body tissue should be kept
healthy and find ways to make it develop fully in children. If a child is well developed,
there is a chance that he/she will want to do more and be more active all on their own. The
source seems credible because it is meant for sports enthusiast or even athletes. It gives
valuable information that will help out with my project because it is neither all about the
parent or all about the child. This information can help me comprehend from both sides of
the argument as to why children show exercise daily.

This article hits the topic of how children become obese when their mindset closes on being
active and refuses to take action to exercise. The facts given are put in a journal by many
authors who went out of their way to study children and conduct "experiments" on their

daily life. Throughout the article it covers how children, as they grow older, being to have
sedentary behavior causing them stop slowly become obese and later suffer the
consequences. It explains how this can be solved if the children are properly looked at and
actually motivated to make it an everyday habit and apart of their daily lives. My goal of
my project is to make not only the kids active but also the parents. With this information I
can make some kind of pamphlet to hand out and make aware how easy it can be to help
out a child who may only need a little push to be better.
Hinson, Curt. Fitness for Children. E-book, Champaign, Human Kinetics, 1995.
In this book Hinson provides a numerous amount of child activities for 5-11 year olds and
dresses the four fitness components: cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, muscular
endurance and flexibility. The book is divided into separate chapters that each correspond
to the four main topics, teaching techniques, what is suitable for each child according to
their grade level and more. Hinson has developed different methods to help out children
based on their age and physical sizes by going into Lancashire Elementary School and
retrieving the information himself. As stated before the book is divided in five chapters that
each break down how fitness can be developed and pursued in children. It suggests how
class organization, the behavior, motivation, and how involving all children in an activity
are all crucial factors to spark children to be more active. Even though this book was
published in 1995, I feel like it would be very helpful to what I plan on doing. It does
contain a lot of valuable information on how each grade level is different, and really helps
me want to target a certain age group to focus on what they need. It provides information
on the certain equipment I should use and mindset I should take on when working with the

children.Knowing What kids like will make it easier for me to promote that spark of
wanted to exercise and be active.

Journal of Public Health, digital ed., vol. 78, no. 9, Sept. 1988, pp. 115660.http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.78.9.1156
Through a study, children in Minnesota were put in a program that helped them change
some ways with their help and the results came to have a positive effect. Apparently 2,250
third grade students in 31 Urban schools in Minnesota wanted to reduce fat and sodium in
their children so they conducted a five week program with parents involved that
encouraged kids to change their health behaviors. Nearly 1000 families completes the
course and that was enough to conclude that family motivation is a huge corresponder for
children wanting to be more active and involved with their own health and needs. It is said
that many families after still kept doing as the had for those five weeks, such as having
fresh food products around the house. Children need a source of motivation to be able to
achieve their goals in life. Sometimes those goals may not be clear if they are never thought
of and that's where parents come in. Motivating the parents will help me greatly in also
motivating the children for my project. it's like they say " monkey see monkey do".

"Physical Activity." The New York Times, 17 June 2013.

http://www.nytimes.com/health/guides/specialtopic/physical-activity/motivation.html
The article is about how fitness is important throughout all life, but it does hit a topic on
how to motivate children and adolescents to exercise and be more active. The New York
Times as we may know is a very extensive and well known newspaper company. The
article speaks of not only what parents can do but also what schools can do to promote a

sense of healthy living among children. It state how children need at least 60 to 20 minutes
of exercise 3 to 5 days a week. It goes on talking about how this can be reached if children
are monitored with their use of technology. The speaker states that at first it may be seen as
a punishment, but in the long run will become a daily habit and will cause a definite
impact. This source seems more helpful to me because of the way it is written. It is both a
credible and common source. It uses techniques that I may have already known but now I
am open to simpler possibilities as well. working with children may not be easy, but it can
help if I am able to reach the parent and how they feel about the matter.
