INTRODUCTION
Pray. Take a moment to pray asking God to guide you in reflecting upon the Scripture text.
Read the Scripture text: Luke 19:28-44
A summary of the sermon: Jesus entered Jerusalem as the worlds true King amid shouts of joy from the multitudes that
had join him. The Pharisees rebuked him for allowing the crowds to do this, but Jesus welcomed it. And then, as he gaze
upon Jerusalem, he broke down weeping because she did not know that God was visiting her in the person of Jesus nor
did she really want the kind of peace Jesus came to give. He is indeed a king like no other.
Key Points:
Jesus was on a mission, and everything in his life led up to these final days of his life. Everything he did and said was
calculated to communicate who he was and what he came to do.
Jesus had on previous occasions kept his identity hidden, that is, he didnt want the crowds proclaiming him King. But
now he allows it, if only briefly, even though they dont get what kind of king he is going to be: one enthroned upon the
Cross. There he will take the evil of the world upon himallowing sin to take its best shotall so that one day he can
put an end to evil without putting an end to us.
The Jewish leaders rebuked Jesus for not rebuking the crowds for their celebration of his kingship, but Jesus said that
if the crowds were silent, then the rocks would cry out. The implication, the Pharisees should join the crowds and all
creation in celebrating his lordship.
Jesus lifted his eyes from the crowds to Jerusalem, and broke down weeping and lamenting because she did not
know what would bring her true peace.
There is a Jesus we want and the Jesus who is. And the two are not the same (HT: Ligon Duncan).
Bottom Line:
Jesus is a king like no othera king you would willingly give your life for because he willingly gave his life for you to
give you true peace.
QUESTIONS
Discussion starter: how do you think most people define peace? Where do people in our city look for peace?
1. How does this text speak to your life?
Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey. In doing so, hes fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, Behold your king
is coming to youhumble and mounted on a donkey. What do you think he might be communicating about his
kingship by entering Jerusalem this way?

How does this text challenge you to not only see that Jesus is a king like no other, but to enthrone him in your life?
What are some ways that you can practically set Christ apart as Lord in your life (cf. 1 Peter 3:15)?

 In light of this text, how would you answer the question, What kind of me is God calling me to be?
2. How does this text speak to us as a church community?

What would it look like for us a church community if we were to embody the joy of the crowds over the kingship of
Jesus? What do we need to see about Jesus for this to become a lived reality in our midst?

What would it look life for us to weep and lament over our citys pursuit of peace apart from Christ? What would
we need to change? What would we need to repent of?

3. How does this text speak to our city?

How would you describe the kind of new life / future in Christ is this text calling our city to experience?
What is at stake if our city never hears the good news about Jesus being a king like no other?
How does that inform the kind of followers of Jesus we need to be for the sake of our city?
