Welcome back students and parents!
I am Ms. Van Patter, the grade three teacher at Hampstead Elementary School and I am looking forward to working with each and every one of you in the coming year. At Hampstead we have an exceptionally diverse group of students which is viewed as a valuable attribute. Therefore, our grade three classroom will be one that embraces diverse backgrounds, learning differences and distinct life experiences. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the values and atmosphere you can expect of our classroom. I explicitly value an inclusive philosophy within my classroom; all my students are viewed as essential contributors to the entire group. I recognize that everyone learns differently, and I will honour and respect all types of learning styles. I understand that success means different things for different students. As your son or daughters teacher I will make every effort to provide those students with special needs; the methods and materials that will enable them to learn effectively, while equally challenging those students who are advanced. I believe that a successful inclusive classroom stems from the communication between parents and teachers. Together we can prepare our students to begin the process of life long learning. For that reason I would like to start off the year by giving you a broad outline of some of the methods I plan on using to encourage an accepting environment. Each year I begin by doing an Interest Inventory with students which allows me to get to know specific interests and learning styles of students. This simple task gives me ample information to differentiate my lessons throughout the year. I intend to make Diversity the topic of our first unit, and will introduce a number of books addressing different cultures, backgrounds, strengths/ weaknesses, religions, and learning disabilities; at this time students are welcome to bring in any books from home or the library that they particularly identify with. Students will be given the opportunity to share with the class, any or all aspects that make them unique. Also, every Friday in third period, our class will participate in a show and tell with the grade four students; this is an ongoing opportunity for students to present items that make them feel special. I am looking forward to meeting all parents at our Welcome Barbeque at 6pm on Friday September 12th, however if you are unable to attend, feel free to set up a phone conference with me any time. Sincerely, Danielle Van Patter
