A message from the cabinet member

for Children and Schools
at Southwark Council
Dear student
Leaving school in year 11 is a huge milestone. This is the point where you choose the next vital steps towards launching
your career. If you are leaving secondary school in summer 2016, I hope that this brochure will help to clarify the process
of deciding which educational route is most suitable for you by providing useful information about the different options
available to you in Southwark.
Whether you want to go on to A Levels, start an apprenticeship or undertake a traineeship, Southwark has opportunities
for every school leaver who wants to learn, work or train. Whatever your future holds, theres something in Southwark for
you. Guaranteed.
Last years A Level results showed an improvement of 5.8% in the number of entries achieving the highest grades of a
A* to A. Students also bettered the national average and the overall pass rate of pupils achieving A* to E grades has
remained stable. Many of our schools have also reported that all of their university candidates have secured either their
first or second university preference.
If, after your A Levels, you are interested in going to university we run a yearly scholarship scheme which we would
encourage you to apply for. Since 2011 we have paid the university fees for 50 outstanding students to enable them to
study debt free.
Dont forget the council run a great apprenticeship scheme which allows you to earn and learn at the same time. Every
year we offer a wide variety of placements enabling people to have a real chance to achieve their career ambitions. As a
Southwark Council apprentice, you will work towards a nationally recognised qualification and also receive the London
Living Wage. If you are interested, you can find out more at www.southwark.gov.uk/apprenticeships.
For more information on your options after GCSEs including further education, apprenticeships and job training, contact
Catherine Verrinder in the participation, education and training service team at catherine.verrinder@southwark.gov.uk
or call 020 7525 2845.
Each sixth form has its own application process, either via its website or a specific form, so make sure you check the
schools individual page in this brochure. I would also advise you to attend some of the open days so that you can tour the
sixth forms or colleges and meet the teachers. That way you know you are choosing somewhere that is right for you and
will allow you to thrive and meet your full potential.
Please let me know if you have any questions about post 16 education in Southwark. You can contact me by emailing
victoria.mills@southwark.gov.uk or by calling 020 7525 1969.
I wish you the very best.

Victoria Mills
Cabinet member for Children and Schools, Southwark Council

Information on Raising
the Participation Age
What is Raising the
Participation Age (RPA)?

Does this mean I cant leave

school at 16?

RPA is a duty placed on all young people by the Education

and Skills Act (2008) to participate in education or training
until their 18th birthday.

Once you complete your GCSEs and secondary education,

there are a number of options available for you to
choose from:

Supported by parents/carers and schools, the government

expects you to make your own decisions about how you
wish to participate.

l continue in full time education such as school, college

or home based learning

Southwark Council provides advice and support to young

people through the participation, education and training
service (see page 9 for more information on the team).

Why was it introduced?

By staying in learning and training you can gain the
qualifications and skills you need to help you to succeed.
Advantages include:
l making it easier to find and stay in a job
l having the ability to earn and give you a greater
choice of career path
l being able to compete in the future local job market
l providing pathways to opportunities where you can
develop your qualifications and skills further in order
to support your future career aspirations for example,
higher education (university) or higher apprenticeships
l you will have a greater chance to develop the
knowledge and practical skills that employers are
looking for.

l start a work based learning programme such as an

apprenticeship
l start full time work alongside part time learning which
leads to an accredited qualification
l volunteering for a minimum of 20 hours alongside part
time learning which leads to an accredited qualification
l if you have your own business and are self employed,
you can combine this with part time learning which
leads to an accredited qualification.

What duty does Southwark

Council have?

What financial support is

available to young people?

The local authority has a duty to secure sufficient suitable

education and training provision for all young people aged
16 to 18 in their area. The local authority must also make
available to young people below the age of 19 support
that will encourage, enable or assist them to participate in
education or training.

The government provides additional funding to colleges

and sixth forms and some learning providers to help
young people in need of financial support to stay in
learning after 16.
This could help with covering the cost of things such as
your transport, books or equipment and trips or visits etc.
Further information related to financial assistance
and the 16 to 19 bursary can be found at
www.gov.uk/1619-bursary-fund
Your tutor or student services may also be able to
answer any queries you may have. Alternatively, you can
contact the Education Funding Agency (EFA) by email at
enquiries.efa@education.gsi.gov.uk for further
information.

post 16 pathways

After GCSEs there are many different pathways availiable to you to

continue your education. Below ARE the three most common pathways.

Year 11

AS levels

A levels

Traineeship

BTEC

Apprenticeship

University

Employment

Picking the right pathway for you

AS Levels:

AS Levels are a standalone

qualification, normally taken as the first stage of an A Level
course. AS Levels are considered a low level 3 qualification
and are worth a small number of UCAS points.

A Levels: A Levels are a level 3 qualification

and the main pre-requisite for university admissions. They
are worth a higher number of UCAS points and are
normally taken after an AS Level in the same subject.

Traineeships:

Traineeships are designed

to help young people aged 16 to 24 to acquire the
appropriate skills and experience, by providing essential
training, English and maths qualifications and work
experience needed to secure an apprenticeship or
employment. One of the key differences between a
traineeship and an apprenticeship is that the company is
not legally obliged to pay a wage to those on a traineeship
(although many still do).

APPRENTICESHIPS: Apprenticeships
University:

University allows young people

to gain degrees. University admissions are based on UCAS
points gained by completing level 3 qualifications. On
average an undergraduate degree lasts for three years.
University can be expensive and currently tuition fees alone
cost on average 26,000 for the three years although
some students may qualify for financial support towards
fees. University can provide many opportunities, including
providing young people a chance to live away from home.
Many universities have links with businesses and graduate
schemes and internships can be instrumental in creating
a career.

offer people the chance to gain work experience, job

specific skills and study towards a nationally recognised
qualification whilst earning a wage as an employee.
Apprenticeships are available to people of all ages including
school leavers and there are a large range of different job
roles and qualifications which you can undertake as an
apprentice. You can find out more about apprenticeships at
www.apprenticeships.gov.uk

BTECS: BTECs provide specialist, work based

learning across a range of sectors. Delivering the
knowledge, skills and understanding students need to
prepare for their chosen career, BTECs are often taken as
an alternative to university.

Picking the right pathway for you

Thinking of studying
at university?
We recognise that the prospect of leaving
university with large debts may make
people think twice about attending higher
education. That is why we created a
Scholarship Scheme that could pay a
contribution towards the cost of university
fees. Find out more about the scholarship
scheme at

Interested in an
apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships offer people the chance
to gain work experience, earn while they
learn, and, achieve a nationally recognised
qualification. We are committed to providing
apprenticeship opportunities so people can
fully develop their potential. Every year we
offer a wide variety of placements enabling
people to have a real chance to achieve
their career ambitions. Our scheme gives
committed people an excellent chance for a
bright future. Find out more about our

Southwark Participation,
Education and training Service (P.E.T)
The Southwark Participation,
Education and Training Service
offers independent information,
advice and guidance to young
people in Southwark. We want to
ensure that all 16 to 19 year olds in
Southwark are offered a curriculum
which meets their needs and that
they are supported into sustained
economic independence in
adulthood.

The main focus of the Southwark Participation, Education

and Training Service is to work with young people who are
Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) or at risk
of becoming NEET. All young people identified as NEET are
allocated an education and training advisor to support
them back into Education, Employment or Training (EET).

The service is Matrix accredited

which is the international quality
standard for organisations that
deliver information and/or advice
and guidance (IAG).

The Southwark Participation, Education and Training

Service will also signpost young people to other services
to address any barriers to learning that the young person
may be facing e.g. housing, social care, health services etc.
They also run targeted funded programmes and will
advertise these when the funding has been agreed.

The service offers support with advice on post 16

pathways and provision, CV writing, confidence building,
support with making phone calls to employers, application
forms (college, university or employment), job search,
national apprenticeship registration, interview techniques
and preparation.

Young people can attend the drop in service every Monday

and Thursday between 10am and 3pm. Alternatively,
appointments can be booked by calling the team on
020 7525 4545.
