Letter From the Editor

Dear Reader,
Were already about halfway through this
school year! Im glad The Phoenix is here to help me
remember my senior year! It feels as though this
year is going by faster than my previous years at
PHS because theres so much going on with
applying to colleges, waiting to here back, and
figuring out how The Phoenix will go on after my
class graduates.
But, with the help of our new underclassmen
members, I dont worry so much anymore about
how or if this magazine will continue to be
produced. Im confident that this new wave of

Phoenix-ers are capable of handling the task of

issues and membership! So, if youre thinking about
joining, now is the time, but you can always next
year!
I hope you all have a good time with this issue of
our magazine, and I commend all our writers for
helping us with this issue during midterms and this
busy time of year. Enjoy!
Sincerely,
Sarah Hill

The Word of the Edition

Henry Hu
Hey readers! The year is new, anew, and if you
have been following our worldly news, you know we
officially have a new president in office! Just as the
year rises and falls, and presidents are elected, reelected, and dismissed, the words of the English
language have their eras of usage, change, and
usurpation. In the spirit of changing times, the
words of this edition are winter and inauguration.
Winters origin reminds me of spring (check out
last years March edition on our website! [See
FAQ]). Like the word spring, it comes from an old
Germanic word, as evidenced by its cousins in all the
other Germanic languages. Winter shares a root
with Old Icelandic vetr, German Winter, and
Danishand Swedishvinter.

the air that blows around. But is winter really wet,

white, or windy? You can decide...

Inauguration, at its surface, seems like it has a

boring, ordinary etymologystraight from Latin
Inaugurationem, since of course they did have
Presidential inaugurations all the way back
then. But waitthe word has an interesting depth
unlike most other direct Latin derivations.
Inaugurationem comes from the same place as
augur. Where, then, does augur come from? It
turns out that augur, an official that interprets
omens, comes from augere, meaning increase,
as in increase our crops. This puts inauguration in
the same family as augment (increase), auction
(sale where you increase the price), and auxiliary
(supplementary, increasing something).

Also like spring, the word winter usurped an

older word, hiems, related to hibernum, from Latin,
whose descendants we still see in words like
hibernation, sleeping in the winter; hiemal,
meaning related to winter; chimera,
a
personification of winter; andwhich you will
recognize if you take Frenchhiver winter.
Unlike spring, however, winters origin is
unclear. Research points to either the stem wedmeaning wet, which would make it a cousin of
water; wind- meaning white, which would make it
related to Irish find white; or even just wind, as in

Once we have augere, increase, it is a short

path to augur, one who reads omens to increase
the crops, and inauguration consecration or
installment of an action based on whether omens
are favorable. Today, the word has changed to
mean ceremony admitting one to office. Here is a
tortuous path, as many words and presidents, albeit
few Latin, take.
Good luck trying to find these words in this
issueand in your daily lives! Happy reading!
Yours Truly,
Henry Hu, Tech Co-editor

*P.S. I am very impressed by the participation this edition!

Extra Credit
According to the International Monetary Fund, India
no longer has the worlds fastest growing
economy. An overnight decision on November 8 by
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discontinue
the circulation of the two most common rupee
notes (500 and 1,000) in hopes of foiling widespread
tax evasion and counterfeiting has taken its toll on
Indias cash-dependent economy.
The Indian
government hoped that invalidation of common
cash would incite a heavier reliance on credit
transactions, which are easier for the government
to keep track of and tax, but the transition will take
time. In the meantime, Indian businesses face
significant drops in employment and revenue.

Overturning Obamacare
About a week ago, the Senate passed a
budget resolution 51-48 that instructs the House
and Senate committees to begin legislative work to
repeal major portions of the Affordable Care Act,
also known as Obamacare. Although, contrary to
social media rumors, Congress has yet to repeal any
portions of the act (as of this reporting), the
resolution is the first major step in moving forward
with gutting Obamacare. President-elect Trump
has been vague about just how the Republicans
should go about repealing the act, and about what
Obamacare replacements (if any) may be in store,
but he has made it clear that repealing the act will
be very high on his list of priorities upon entering
the Oval Office. Regardless of what is in store, and
despite the vows of Democrats to protect the
existing legislation, efforts against the Affordable
Care Act march surely on.

to 35 years in prison after the incident. On January

17th, President Obama overrode secretary of
defense Ashton Carter to commute Mannings
sentence from 35 years to 7. The decision has
sparked much controversy in the intelligence
community and among citizens. Many share
concern about the precedent Obama has set by
pardoning a whistleblower, and many would like
to compare the situations of Manning and Edward
Snowden, a former NSA contractor also convicted
for leaking classified information in 2013, but an
anonymous source noted an important difference
between the two cases: [Snowden] dodged blame,
fled the country and is hiding from
prosecution...[Manning] went through the process,
acknowledged she had done something wrong. She
was tried and sentenced (CNN).

Fever Pitch
Before 2015, 2014 was the hottest year on record-the trend continues. NASA and NOAA (National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) have
both announced that 2016 has 2015 beat for the
hottest year on record. NOAA observed a 1.69
degree Fahrenheit increase from the 20th-century
average of 57 degree Fahrenheit average
temperature of the earth across land and
sea. NASA observed a .22 degree Fahrenheit
increase in average from 2015.

Chelsea Freed
In 2013, former US Army Intelligence specialist
Chelsea Manning was convicted for violation of the
Espionage Act after leaking classified videos and
documents to WikiLeaks. Manning was sentenced

butter and sugar together until combined, then

add egg and vanilla and stir them in. Stir in flour,
graham cracker crumbs and baking powder.
Divide the dough roughly in half. Press half the
dough in the bottom and up the sides of the
prepared pie pan. (I personally believe the pie
turns out better if a slightly bigger half is used to
cover the bottom of the pan.)
Evenly spread the Marshmallow Creme over the
bottom crust. Separate chocolate squares and
place on top of the Marshmallow Creme. Place 1
cup of marshmallows on top.
Using the remaining crust, pat sections of dough
on top of and around all the marshmallows (they
should still show through and that is great!).
Sprinkle with 1/4 cup chocolate chips, then bake
20 minutes until lightly browned.
Remove pan from oven and set it on a wire rack.
Cool completely before cutting, or you will have
a gooey mess. (Not that I know)

Getting Lit
(Opinion) Andrew Kelbley
January is the time when everyone chooses next
years classes. Many people have asked me
questions like how hard is APUSH? or how many
APs do you think I should take? or I want to go
into medicine does that mean I have to take
anatomy? (No, it doesnt). Even though Im not a
guidance counselor, Ive decided to share my
thoughts about classes.
Junior year, I decided to stray from the full AP
science track and take both Yoga and Lifeguarding
instead of AP Chemistry. At the time, my friends in
Chem were convinced I would eventually regret my
decision because the weighting on my GPA would
be lower and my schedule would look less
demanding. In hindsight, Im happy with my
decision, because Yoga was a blast and
Lifeguarding got me a great summer job. The
lesson I learned from this is that taking a few
relaxing electives is much more fun than filling your
schedule up entirely with hard classes. If you really

dont care about a subject, replace it with

something like yoga: college admissions decisions
probably wont hinge on that one extra AP class
anyway.
However, if a harder class does interest you,
definitely take it, regardless of how difficult people
might say it is. At first, I was unsure about taking AP
Lit, because its notorious for being very
challenging, but I went for it. Im so glad I did,
because Ive learned a lot. A class wont seem like a
lot of work if you really enjoy the subject. If you love
math, go ahead and take Calc! If you love history,
take APUSH! It might require some effort, but in the
end it will be worth it.
At the end of the day, creating the ideal
schedule is not about taking a certain number of
honors classes, or choosing the easiest APs, or
taking classes that fit a certain major. The most
important question to ask is what do I really
enjoy?

Report: Parking Permit Prices

Colin MacKellar and Zachary Hoedl
In order to park at Pomperaug, you
need to purchase a parking permit.
However, unless you have 250$ to
spend, then don't count on getting
one. After conducting some
research, data has divulged that
although Pomperaug parking permit
prices are high, Pomperaug is not
alone. This information can be
disclosed by taking a look at parking
permit prices for high schools
around Connecticut.
As stated earlier, Pomperaug is not
alone in having preposterous ticket
Continued on next page (9).

The Phoenix
prices; Wilton and Brookfield had $150 priced
permits. Furthermore, some schools like Simsbury
had even matched Pomperaugs absurdity ($250).
However, this data does not show the why aspect
that answers the reason for such high prices. The
fact that affluent towns like Weston and Ridgefield
have lower parking permit prices makes one wonder
why Pomperaug needs such a high permit price, in
general respect to the town of Southbury. Even a
private school like Hopkins still has a lower permit
cost then Pomperaug; while they have complete
manipulation to theirs being unattached to public
schools.

...a private school

Like Hopkins still has
A lower permit cost...
As stated above, the data does not show
visible evidence of why permit prices are so
high. Back in 2014, Superintendent Regina L.
Botsford issued the following statement on the
permit prices: "The Region 15 Board of Education
has been charging for student parking for over a
decade. Effective with the 2013-14 school year, the
Board approved parking fees for students in the
amount of $250 per year, which equates to $1.38
per day. Region 15 provides bus transportation for
all students at an average cost of over $40,000 per
bus.

[R15] has been charging

for student parking for
Over a decade...
NBC Connecticut offered some additional
explanation on the issue, they said Revenue from
parking fees offsets budget expenditures. Were
parking fees reduced or eliminated, additional
revenue would have to be generated. That would be

9
in the form of additional taxation to the residents of
Middlebury and Southbury.
This denotes if
students were not charged as much for their parking
spots, it would lead to higher taxes or higher prices
in another form. While it is indispensable to keep in
mind that NBC Connecticut also said that some
districts don't charge at all.

...it would lead to

Higher taxes, or higher
Prices in another form.
It remains uncertain whether it is true that
Region 15 legitimately needs to charge students
$250.00 for parking permits, but until this is
revealed, it is assumed that Region 15 is being
honest and that there really is a reason for such a
high parking permit price. However, it remains
unclear how other districts are able to keep up with
such lower fees. In addition, a point can be made
that it is very unfair to charge the student body so
much for parking due to the number of after school
activities that nearly require that a student has a
parking spot. If a senior/junior does not buy a
parking permit, then they would need to take the
bus home, and then drive their car back to school in
time to make it to practice/after school activity. This
isn't even considering the fact a student might miss
a bus, and the late bus does not arrive until
approximately 4 PM or later.
In conclusion, much of the school culture for
seniors and juniors is based around the assumption
they have a parking permit, and if they are in fact
overcharging, then that is quite unfair to the
hardworking parents and students who have to pay
for parking spot. Henceforth, this injustice will be
cured overtime, but this can only be done by the
people of Pomperaug and those who are ambitious.

Math Feature: Area of a Circle?

Tanishq Kancharla
Youve probably used the common equation r2 to
describe the area of a circle, or 2r as the
circumference of a circle, but have you ever thought
about where these equations come from?
To find out, we need to first define what (pi) is. Pi
() is defined as the ratio of a circles circumference
to its diameter. This means that, no matter what
size circle you use, the length of its circumference
divided by the length of its diameter will always be
the same number we all know and love: 3.141592
Unfortunately, its still not very clear or intuitive why
is the number it is; it seems to just be a
fundamental constant that arises everywhere in our
universe, even in quantum theory and equations
involving gravity. Millions of digits of have been
calculated by computers, but there is still no
apparent pattern in its decimal expansion. In fact, so
many digits have been calculated that there is a
websitemypiday.comthat finds the first
occurrence of your birthday in pis decimal
expansion.

And then rearranging the sectors as follows:

(created using GeoGebra)

This may not look much like a rectangle...but
suppose we used 8 sectors instead of 4:

And it is not hard to imagine that if the number of

sectors goes to infinity, the rectangle becomes this:

Now, from the definition that is the ratio between

a circles circumference and diameter, it becomes
clear why the circumference of a circle

C = d = 2r
We can also derive the area. Consider the following
partition of a circle:
Notice the shorter side is just the radius of the circle,
and the longer side is simply the circumference of
the circle divided by 2 (look at the previous
diagrams). And so, the area of a circle is:

Continued on next page (11).

The Phoenix

r*((r)) = r2
Of course, the above was by no means a rigorous
proof, but it is an intuitive one. Similarly, the same
method can be used to find the volume of a sphere,
but it is significantly more complicated. One can use
calculus instead. The proof using calculus revolves
around the idea that a sphere is made up of infinite
circles and the circles are getting larger from a
radius of 0 to the radius of the sphere and then go
back down to a radius of 0.

Bonus Facts:

The above are not approximations! They are actually true. However, the first sequence converges to so
slowly that even 300 terms cant correctly approximate to 2 digits!

Sports: Plight of the PGA Tour Caddie

Matt Wisnefsky
PGA Tour caddies are one of the most
exploited groups of people in all of sports. It may
seem like a glamorous life of making six figures for
just carrying pro golfers clubs and giving them
suggestions on which club to use; however, things
often aren't as they seem. When you take a closer
look, you notice that caddies are often very much
taken advantage of.

The way they are taken advantage of the

most is through advertising, every week depending
on who sponsors the tournament, caddies are
forced to wear a bib with the company who is
sponsoring the tournaments logo on it. They walk
around with a big logo for the sponsoring company
on it and they are not compensated at all. In 2015,
a group of caddies sued the PGA tour for total
damages in the hundreds of millions of dollars
(about 750$ per tournament per caddie), in their
lawsuit they said that the PGA Tour made 50 million
on the caddies wearing these bills, and that the PGA
Tour had reckless conduct and rigged the system so
the caddies had an actual loss on these
advertisements.

(Continued from page 11.)
Another problem that these caddies are
suing for is that the PGA Tour has denied these
caddies access to health care or pension plans.
Being a caddy is very strenuous on the back and
knees, and as caddies get older they often suffer
from back and knee problems so it's important that
they are able to get health insurance and be
protected in their retirement.

Story: Playing Devils Advocate (1)

Shefkije Dani
I think Ive held the story of what happened that
night down long enough. Its time to rid myself of
what I had to endure just for knowing that
disturbing family. It has been a long time coming, I
just want the night terrors to stop at this point.
Maybe playing the advocate was the worst thing I
could do in my lifetime because the Devil has
rooted himself inside of me and wont leave.
Although my hand is the element of which this will
ever be seen by whoever chooses to dare read
through, one of my most scattered works of
literature, and feel the intense emotions I felt that
night at that horrible home, I shall never mention
whom I am and only refer to myself in the first
person.

Mercy Leviathan
The one thing people failed to see when they
looked at Mercy was that she was anything but
merciful. She knew how to play up the part really
well, no one wouldve expected her to live up to her
lineage. At least no one thought so until I
experienced it.
I befriended the dark-haired and beautifully

quirky girl in the first few weeks of living in the

dismal little town of Quickly. This led to me pulling
her into the spotlight more often and making her
become incredibly popular among the children of
the town. What helped that process come to be was
her parents involvement with the school following
her new-found popularity. For every person that
became a part of our group of friends, the school
district would gain a high amount of money to go
towards the arts as well as updates to the schools
infrastructure. Soon the little girl whom people
found intimidating and hard to come by, became
the most talked about girl in town for reasons other
than her pretentiousness. While everyone came to
almost worship the girl and her family, I knew
better. I knew things that only someone who was as
close to the family, as I was, would know. The
Leviathans, especially Mercy had a large secret, and
their time was drawing to close. Really soon the
Leviathans would be shown their doom as had their
ancestors before them.

The Leviathans
As the proud owner of the most sought after

The Phoenix
restaurant in all of the state, Michael Leviathan was
a showy kind of modest. He proved so when he
bought the oldest home in all of Quickly, yet never
invited anyone to see the inside of the grandiose
home. He bought expensive cars and never drove
them unless he was dropping Mercy off at school,
preferring to drive an old rusty truck with dents in
its fenders and a bed that was a multi-colored with
the different parts. His spouse of over 30 years, was
no exception to this type of flashy modesty. With
her long white-blond hair, to the thin pale face that
it graces, to her long and elegant body, Mary
Leviathan was a vision of beauty. Instead of
enhancing her already striking features using the
latest in makeup, she went day to day with a clear
and shining face.
Mercy was their fifth child, another addition to
the impeccable and shifty family. Her three oldest
triplet brothers, Adam, Abel, and Cain, were the
ones who helped out at the restaurant and kept
Mercy and their sister, Eve, in line when their
parents went on trips.
To be completely honest, whenever I slept over
it was almost like the pale boys followed my every
move with their amber colored eyes, almost cat-like
in nature, preying on me from afar. It wasnt that I
wasnt so used to the cockeyed and slow glances
from Abel, it was that Adam always looked at me as
if I was a trophy rather than his siblings good
friend. That definitely always made me wary of the
boys. Eve was a complete nut job, you could step
one foot through the gate and youd hear her
yowling loud and clear, like gunfire barreling down
next to your head.

The House On The Hill

Somehow it is always a house on the hill, with
the storm clouds butting up against the roof-top
and the multiple chimneys sticking out at random
heights, intimidating anyone who stops at the
gates and just stares at the monstrosity. Their

13
home was one of such, a seemingly endless
driveway curving around the hill and allowing the
mind to wander and think of everything that
couldve happened along the asphalt, all the tears
and bloodshed. Secret lovers meetings and the
family cars lined up for a party in the home itself. As
I have said before, the home was large and
intimidating from the outside, but only I knew of
the workings of the rooms indoors. The home had
many rooms, some of which were locked off or
forbidden for me to enter, others that seemed
always busy or cold and then the few that were
quiet and meant for the family to allow guests in. It
was customary for Mercy and I to share her
bedroom when I came to visit, she had an en suite
and two beds in her large room, perfect for me to
not have to wander about at night in search for a
restroom. But the nights were never calm and
serene, the constant torturous screams of, what I
had always presumed to be, the windows of the old
building holding up to the wind and the moans as
the house swayed kept me up throughout the night,
and only ceased long enough for me to catch two
hours of rest before Eve was to enter the room,
yelling bloody murder, for us to be down at
breakfast. We would pad down to the large dining
room and I would sit down in a chair in front of Cain,
who more or less inhaled three times the amount of
food than anyone else at the table, Mercy to my left
and Eve to my right. He and I would share glances
throughout all of breakfast, his a knowing look,
mine one of confusion and embarrassment. It would
only be a year later that I learned why my restless
nights always ended in such awkward mornings
