Moldova

Moldova is located in south-eastern part of Europe between Romania and Ukraine.

Moldova claimed its independence in August of 1991. Moldova was once a part of Romania.
After World War I, Moldova became part of the Soviet Union and separated from the USSR in
1991. However Russian forces still have a presence in some parts of Moldova.
Moldova is one of the smallest and least fortunate countries in Europe. The population of
Moldova is a little over three million people. The population of people vary between Ukrainian,
Moldovan, Russian, Romanian, and Gagauz. The language spoken is Russian, Romanian, or
branch of Romanian which is considered Moldovan.
There are over 1600 rural settlements in Moldova, and half of the settlements are still
populated with people. Moldova has many villages where people live outside of the city life.
Over the years the rural population has decreased and the urban population has increased. The
reason for the change in population was due to: migration from villages to towns, population
growth. In these villages the people have their own means of getting food. There are wells for the
people to get their water from. Many homes have vines growing grapes for the summer to
prepare for wine making season. The people also burn their garbage.
The climate of Moldova is warm summers and regular winters. The summer I was in
Moldova it was extremely hot and we were sweating the whole time. Some natural resources are
limestone, lignite, and phosphorite. As the video on guns, germs and steel shared different
information on the people of New Guinea, Moldova isn't a very large and popular country. The
people of Moldova rely on their vegetables, wine, tobacco, and fruit productions. The vegetables
and fruit are very fresh and natural.
The economy since separation from the Soviet Union has decreased drastically. Moldova
depends on Russia as their energy source. They have a balance of over five billion dollars to
Russia for energy. In the villages there is little to no plumbing and some homes dont depend on
electricity for their daily lives. The value of a Moldovan lei to a us dollar is 20 lei. On my trip to
Moldova I learned so much about the people from experience and not research. Yes, this country
is very poor, but the people are very happy. They love their country and are happy with how far
they have come.
