ABOUT THE SUB-CULTURE

Gothic fashion is a clothing style marked by

conspicuously dark, mysterious, antiquated and
homogenous features. A dark, sometimes morbid
fashion and style of dress, typical gothic fashion
includes a pale complexion with colored black hair,
black lips and black clothes.
Goth fashion can be recognized by its stark black
clothing. Ted Polhemus described goth fashion as a
"profusion of black velvets, lace, fishnets and leather
tinged with scarlet or purple, accessorized with tightly
laced corsets, gloves, precarious stilettos and silver
jewelry depicting religious or occult themes"
When it comes to styling the perfect goth outfit, its all
about being unique and different from the rest of the
crowd. One of the best ways of distinguishing yourself from others is to look carefully at the
details offered in this selection of clothing. To a sense of what styles to look for, it helps to look
into how goth fashion has evolved.
Gothic fashion features dark colors and extravagant layers, sometimes incorporating the
influence of the punk rock clothing culture with rivets, studs, safety pins, collars, and chains.
Gothic culture includes not only fashion but writing focused on the supernatural and horror
films. The gothic subculture has endured for more than 30 years, at times even crossing into
mainstream culture through movies like The Craft and Interview with a Vampire. Gothic fashion
has procreated and crossed with several sub-genres, including Gothic Lolita, Steampunk,
industrial, EDM, and heavy metal. If you're involved in an alternative subculture at all, chances
are at some point its taken influence from the gothic.
Goths are more than a Roman-beating Germanic
tribe the Goth subculture started in the late 1970s
in England. Goths came from the punk scene, but
instead of politics and anarchism, they embraced
music and goth clothing inspired by horror films and
macabre experiences. Music, fashion, artwork, and
literature began to be labeled "gothic" if it they
contained elements of dark romance, death, horror
and fantasy. So what defines a goth? A certain
preachment for the macabre, a lust for the dark
side, a preoccupation with horror films, Victorian

mourning customs and ghost stories.

Goth fashion has a reciprocal relationship with the fashion
world. In the later part of the first decade of the 21st
century, designers such as Alexander McQueen, Anna Sui,
Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh, Ann Demeulemeester, Philipp
Plein, Hedi Slimane, John Richmond, John Galliano, Olivier
Theyskens and Yohji Yamamoto[15] brought elements of
goth to runways. This was described as "Haute Goth" by
Cintra Wilson in the New York Times.
Gothic lolita fashion is characterized by darker make-up
and clothing. Red lipstick and smokey or neatly defined
eyes, created using black eyeliner, are typical styles.
Though Gothic make-up has been associated with a white-powdered face, this is usually
considered poor taste within the (largely Japanese) fashion scene. BRANDS which exemplify the
Gothic lolita style include Atelier-Pierrot, Atelier Boz, Black Peace Now, H. Naoto Blood and
Moi-mme-Moiti. Author and TV Host La Carmina is a popular model of Gothic lolita fashion.
Brands like Tripp, Devils Night UK, Dogpile, Jawbreaker, Lip Service, and unique brands that
make the best gothic and vampire clothing.
