PRACTICES
Academic standards set the foundation for our schools and set the expectations
for what students should know and be able to do each year and upon graduation.
While state science standards historically have been inconsistent, unfocused, and
unimaginative and not anchored in real-world expectations 26 states are
taking a step forward by developing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Rather than siloing, NGSS includes
cross-cutting concepts so students
can understand how various
science disciplines overlap and
interact.

Key Messages
The U.S. has a leaky K-12 STEM talent pipeline, with too few
students entering STEM majors and careers, and too few highlyqualified teachers in the science disciplines. We need new
science standards that stimulate and build interest in STEM
education.
