peoplewhosexperiencesaresoverydifferentfromeachother?
SowhoamI,professionallyspeaking?Well,itwasprettysimple
untilIwas29yearsold.Thatwastheyear(2001)inwhichI
receivedmyPhDinsociologyfromGoldsmithsCollege(onthe
sociologyoftheglobalextrememetalscene),followingonfrommy
MA,alsofromGoldsmithsinsociology,andmyBAinSocialand
PoliticalSciencesfromCambridge.Otherthanacoupleofyears
spentworkingandtravelling,itwasallprettystandardstuff.
PostPhDwaswherethefunbegan.AlthoughIlovescholarship,
academiaandteaching,Ihad,bythetimeIfinishedmydoctorate,
resolvedtoattemptsomethingdifficulttopursueacareerboth
withinandwithouttheacademy,drawingonthestrengthsofboth.
Thereasonswerethreefold:Firstofall,Iwasapprehensiveabout
takingonthementalandphysicaldemandsofaacademic
lectureship.SincemysecondyearasanundergraduateIhad
sufferedfrommoderatebutpersistentChronicFatigueSyndrome
anditwasstillwithmebytheendofmyPhD.Thesecondreason
formyambivalencetowardsfulltimeacademiawasarevulsionat

Thereisaslowlyemergingmovementmadeupofpeoplelikeus
Whileanorganizationforsociologistsoutsideacademiaisstilla
rarething,thereismoreandmoreattentionbeingpaidtothework
andtheproblemsofscholarswhoworkoutsideacademia.This
stemsinpartfromtheincreasinginstabilityofacademiccareersand
universitysrelianceonparttimefaculty:simplyput,therearemore
andmorepeoplewithPhDswhocannotfindpermanentandstable
jobswithintheacademy.Thereisalsoamorepositivereasonfor
theattentionbeingpaidtoscholarshipoutsideacademia:spurred
onbyincreasingtuitionfees,theintrusionofmanagerialist
prerogativesintotheuniversitiesandtheexpandingpossibilitiesof
newtechnology,peoplearebeginningtoexplorealternativewaysof

sustainablemodelforearningalivingoutsidetheacademy.Togo
backtomytwoexamples,theyareasdisappointingastheyare
inspiring:theSocialScienceCentrestillreliesonunpaidlabourthe
contributorstotheparaacademichandbookhandinterestingthings
tosayaboutdevelopinganonacademicscholarlyidentity,butthere
werefewsuggestionsastohowtosupportoneself.
Itmaybethatthebestwaytodoscholarshipoutsidetheacademy
iseithertoworkforathinktankorconsultancywhich,asIwill
argueshortly,hascertainlimitationsortogetafulltimedayjob
andbeascholarinonessparetime.Forthoselikemewhocannot
ordontwanttoembraceeitheroption,itspossiblethatthewaythat
Ivemanagedtosortofmakemycareerworkformeisatgoodasit
gets.Ifso,thatsquiteadepressingthought!
Sociologistremainsalargelyacademicidentity
Unlikepsychology,forexample,thesociologicalidentityseemsto
belargelyconfinedtotheacademy.Ofcourse,sociologicalwork
hasalwaysbeendoneoutsideoftheacademy.Socialresearchers
andmarketresearchersaresociologists,althoughtheirpolicy
orientationmeanstheyusuallycontributelittletosociologicaltheory
assuch.Yetitistellingthatsocialandmarketresearchershave
theirownassociationsintheUKtheSocialResearch
AssociationandtheMarketResearchSocietyratherthan
formingsectionswithintheBSA.Theirprofessionalidentitiesare
largelysemidetachedfromsociology.
Soitisthat,despitetheeffortsoftheBSASOAgroup,Iseelittle
evidencethattheidentityofsociologistisbecomingdisentangled
fromthatofacademic.Thisremainsasourceofsadnesstome.I
stillcallmyselfasociologistandembracethisidentitybutIcannot
helpsometimesfeellikeabitofafraudindoingso.

amnotsomeonewhoisobsessedwithtitlesandstatus,butthefact
remainsthatthewayoneisseenbytheworlddoesdependinpart
onsuchthings.Someofthosewhowerecontemporariesofmine
whilewewerestudyingforPhDsarenowreadersandeven
professors.Incontrast,Icannotencapsulateinatitlewhatexactlyit
isthatIdo.Itsalmostinevitablethatsomepeoplewhodontknow
myworkmaythinkthatIamadilettanteorsomeonewhojustisnt
goodenoughforaproperposition.Theoppositeproblemcanalso
occur:Ihaveattimesbeenassumedtobeaprofessorandmypart
timeteachinggigatBirkbeckhasbeeninflatedintosomethingmore
thanitactuallyiscorrectingsuchmisapprehensionsis

buttheyalwaysendeventually,leavingresearcherswithan
impossiblechoicespendthelastfewmonthsofthecontract
preparinganewapplicationratherthanactuallydoingresearch,or
faceabarrenperiodbetweengrants.
Forthosewhoareunableorunwillingtoeitheraccepttheinsecurity
andlowstatusoftemporaryand/orparttimework,ortoenterfull
timeconventionalacademicemployment,therearepreciousfew
options.Parttime,permanentacademicpoststhatareonthetrack
thatcanleadtoaprofessorshiparesimplyasfarasIcansee
nonexistent.Academiaisstillaonesizefitsallprofession.
Someofthetimeatleast,beingaSOAcanhaverealadvantages
Toaddtothemountainofothercommitmentsthatacademicstoday
have,theyaresupposedtodemonstratetheimpactoftheirwork.
Inthisrespect,theREFiscompletelycontradictoryandabsurd:
REFsubmissionsarejudged,inthemain,onproductsofresearch
that,bybeingpublishedlargelyintheacademicsphere,areby
definitionlimitedintheirimpact.SotheREFhashadtodemand
additionalimpactcasestudiesthatarebasedonactivitiesthat
cannotbecountedpositivelyintherestoftheexercise.
Blessedly,SOAsdonothavetoperformsuchimpossible
contortions.Researchcanbecommunicatedinanyformthatis
appropriate.SOAscan,iftheywish,dotheoreticalblueskies
researchthathasnoimpactbeyondspecialists.Theycanalsowrite
booksthatcommunicatewiththewiderpublicasIhavedone
withoutbeingpressuredtosalamislicethemintojournalarticles
fromwhichthepubicisexcludedbypaywall.Theycandopolicy
orientedresearchthatcanbecommunicatedtothepublicwithout
havingtojumpthroughthehoopsoftheREF.
Potentiallythen,thefreedomofbeingaSOAisntjustpersonally
liberating,italsoallowsustodosociologywechoosetodowithout
atleastsomeoftheconstrictionsofcontemporaryneoliberal
academia.Toanextentatleast,thespiritoftheacademycanbe
retainedoutsidetheacademywhilstouruniversitiesareravagedby
managerialism.

viableandsustainablecareervitalthosetheseissuesareand
touchonmorefundamentalmatters:whatdoesitactuallymeanto
beasociologist?While,asIvesaid,Ihavestubbornlyembraced
thisidentityeventhoughitseemsforthemostpartalargely
academicone,definingwhatasociologistactuallyisremains
difficult.
BydifficultIdontmeanthatdefinitionsofsociologyarenotwidely
available.Anysociologicaltextbookwilldothis.TheBSAsDiscover
Societypamphletthatseekstointroducesociologyasanoption
forprospectivestudentsoffersthefollowing:
Sociologyseekstounderstandallaspectsofhumansocial
behaviour,includingthesocialdynamicsofsmallgroupsofpeople,
largeorganisations,communities,institutionsandevenentire
societies.Sociologistsaretypicallymotivatedbytheirdesireto
betterunderstandthefundamentalprinciplesofsociallife,believing
thatanunderstandingoftheseprincipleswillhelpimprovepeoples
livesthroughmoreenlightenedandeffectivepolicies
Althoughonemightquibblewithsomeofthewording(enlightened
forexample),thisseemstobeasgoodabriefdefinitionasmightbe
achieved.ItcertainlydescribesmuchofwhatIvetriedtodoinmy
owncareerasasociologist.
Thedifficultyformeliesinhowtodefinebeingasociologistwhens
onesrelationshiptoacademiaisambiguousordistant.The
problemisthat,giventheoverwhelmingdominanceofacademic
sociology,thecoreactivityofmostsociologistsiscontributingtothe
everexpandingsociologicalcanon.Whenacademicsociologists
publish,theyareinsertingtheirownworkintoadense,multi
dimensionalandselfreferencingnetworkofpublications.When
academicsociologiststeach,theyareinductingstudentsintothis
network.
Whathappens,then,whenasociologistoutsideacademiaisunable
orunwillingtoembedthemselvesintothisvastnetworkofwords?
AsImentionedearlier,itcanbeextremelydifficulttoremainin
touchwiththeevergrowingdelugeofacademicsociologicalwriting.
Cansomeonebeoutsideofthisnetworkandstillbeabletocall
themselvesassociologist?Isthereasociologicalsensibilitywhose

OnemightreturntotheBSAsconcisedefinitionorotherworkssuch
asCWrightMillsSociologicalImagination,andsayyes,ofcourse
thereissuchabedrock.Yet,formostpracticalpurposes,the
identityofsociologistisstillconfinedlargelytothosewhoembed
themselvesinthenetworkIhavementioned.Withrareexceptions,
itisnotenoughtosimplybeenthusedwithasociologicalsensibility
toberecognizedbyothersasasociologist,onehastodemonstrate
onesfamiliaritywithandabilitytoaddtotheworkofother
sociologists.
NowIwanttomaketwothingsclearatthispoint:First,Iamnot
suggestingthatthosewhowishtoidentifyassociologistshouldnot
readtheworkofsociologistsandreferencethemaccordingly.
Second,IamnotsuggestingthatImyselfdonotdothis!
WhatIamsuggestingthough,isthatifsociologyistobemorethan
aninternalconversation,itdoesneedtorecognizeandnurturethe
possibilitiesfordoingsociologythatarenotreliantonaconstantly
updatedfamiliaritywiththeenormousacademicsociological
