Whats Up Dock?
CONSTRUCTION STARTS
ON FERRY LANDING

By Katie McFadden

The first visible sign of the

Rockaway ferry has arrived. It
isnt a boatthose wont arrive
for another few months, but the
landing at Beach 108th Street is
on its way to being installed.
Last week, a barge with a crane
and other supplies arrived in Jamaica Bay, and on the morning
of Wednesday, January 25, the
first piling was removed from
the barge. Officials and ferry fans
alike signed the piling for good
luck. Over the next two weeks, the
pilings will be installed and the
landing will be connected, and in
a few months, the contractors will

return to do the electrical work.

The ferry is on schedule to begin
service in June.
James Patchett, the incoming
president and CEO of the NYC
Economic Development Corporation, was on hand for the
construction start. As you can
see, today is the first visible sign
of progress of the citywide ferry
service, which is launching this
summer. I think its a really exciting opportunity for the city entirely and of course especially for
the Rockaways, which will have
access directly to Lower Manhattan and Sunset Park, and also a
possibility for members of Manhattan and Brooklyn to come out

here and enjoy the shops and

everything the Rockaways has to
offer, Patchett said. Its really exciting and were thrilled to be out
here.
Joe Hartigan, a longtime ferry advocate said, This is a game
changer for Rockaway. However, he expressed some concerns
like there being no safe, enclosed
waiting area for the ferry landing.
The Rockaway ferry will be a
part of an entire citywide ferry system, which will include
19 vessels at 21 landings across
six routes. Rockaways dock is
the first of 10 newly constructed
landings being installed around
the city for the ferry system. Astorias landing will come next. The
boats have been under construction since last year and the first
will be complete by next week,
but Patchett said this one isnt
Rockaways vessel, which will be
slightly different than the others.
The boats, which can accommo-

date up to 149 people, will be operated by Hornblower. A ride will

cost the same amount as a MetroCard., which is currently $2.75,
but expected to increase to $3.

Grease Was The Word

In the old days, you used to
be able to grease somebody. I
have no idea if that expression
is still used, and for those of
you who are unfamiliar with
the term, it means paying
somebody for a favor. There
was a long line, so I greased
the bouncer and he let us in. It
was pretty commonplace and
these transactions were the
way of the world.
Same thing at stadiums.
Youd be at Yankee Stadium or
Madison Square and youd slip
the usher a couple of bucks,

and suddenly the ticket you

bought for the nose-bleed section got you one of the best
seats in the house.
There was even an art to
slipping the guy some green.
Youd make it part of a handshake. Youd make the dollar
bill (whatever the denomination) visible for just long
enough for him to see it, and
then youd make the transfer
on the handshake. There was
an art in this bribery and you
had to know how to play the
game. If someone came wav-

Page 5

ing a hundred-dollar bill over

their head, theyd be ignored
or shooed away.
I never paid a maitre d' at a
restaurant for a better table because I thought I might be insulting him. Hes wearing a tux
what am I giving him money
for? I just didnt know what I
was supposed to do. Of course,
I can count on my thumb how
many times Ive been to a place
with a maitre d'.
That uncertainty is the new
normal. You dont know who
or when to grease. And its
hard to do a dollar handshake
when everybodys fist bumping. You dont want to try and
grease somebody if theyre going to botch it. If youre gonna
grease somebody with a $20
and it falls on the floor, you really have to do an about-face
and walk away, forfeiting the
twenty.
In the days of the grease you
didnt have tip jars on counters
in regular stores. And stadiums these days are like Disney
World or some corporate conference. You get people who
seem happy to see you, and

will point out your seats with

professional courtesy. Not like
the old days where ushers with
dirty rags would wipe down
your seat that didnt need
wiping, (until after he used
that rag), and then give you a
shakedown look.
Greasing is different from
tipping, which will get full attention in another column.
Greasing is benevolent bribery. But my guess is that it's
dying out. Im too decrepit to
be going to clubs these days so
Im not standing on line wondering if I should grease the
bouncer. Instead Im wondering if bouncers get greased at
all. Im thinking at hip places,
the bouncers get zilch.
I mean, hipsters love waiting on line. Theyd think itd be
a waste of money to slip somebody money to get off a line
to go inside. Waiting on line
is part of the experience. Or
some would wait in line with
the hope of catching someone
trying to grease the bouncer.
Theyd get to shout, Not cool!
I miss the days when grease
was the word.

Katz to Discuss State

of the Borough
on Friday

By Katie McFadden

How are things going in

Queens? Queens Borough
President
Melinda
Katz
knows. Shell be giving all the
answers during her State of
the Borough address on Friday, January 27, but she gave
a sneak peak to media this
week.
On Tuesday, January 24,
Melinda Katz sat down with
the press at Queens Borough
Hall to provide a look at some

of whats to come during her

State of the Borough (SOTB)
address, which will be held
at York College (94-45 Guy R.
Brewer Boulevard) in Jamaica at 10 a.m. on Friday. Much
of the SOTB address will revolve around this years motto of Queens is a borough
of growth and a borough of
families. Katz will focus on
these subjects while comparing where Queens was, where
it stands and her expectations
and plans for the future.

Katz will discuss how

Queens has grown in the last
few years by looking at tourism and economic development numbers. She said that
Queens generated $8.3 billion
in tourism for 2016, making it
the second biggest borough
for growth, next to Manhattan.
She said numbers like these
show promise, as it will give
the city and state more reason
to supply the borough with
funding for things like education, infrastructure, senior facilities and other necessities.
The increase in tourism has
led to an increase and upgrade
to tourist facilities. She said
18 new hotels have opened in
Queens over the last few years
and another 30 are in the
pipeline. With NYCs airports
located in Queens, the airline
industry is the second largest industry for employment,
next to healthcare. Major renovations to the airports have
led to extreme growth from
24 to 28 million passengers,
103,000 to 129,000 jobs and up
to $18 billion in economic activity at LaGuardia in the last
five years. JFK saw an increase
from $32 to $42 billion. Katz
expects these numbers to grow
further as renovations continue and she believes tourism
will increase. She notes the
many draws of Queens as a
tourist destination, including
its multicultural restaurants,
galleries, Resorts World Casino, and of course, Rockaway.
Its the most beautiful beach
in the city of New York, and
tourism numbers have increased in amazing amounts.
People are coming back to see
Rockaway, Katz said.
Katz also touched upon
Queens being a place for families. She notes that Queens
has some of the best schools
in the state, but theyre overcrowded, with schools being
at about 120 percent capacity. She acknowledged that
new schools and seats need
to be added, but temporary

solutions like trailers are not

the answer. She has helped to
reduce the number of educational trailers from 153 to 109
in the past few years. She has
also helped bring schools up
to date with technology. By
the end of this term, I will
have bought Smartboards
and laptops for every single elementary and middle
school in the borough, including District 27 schools.
In addition to school improvements, Queens has saw
improvements and additions
to its parks. There have been
31 groundbreakings for parks
and $57 million has gone toward improving 57 Queens
parks over the past few years.
In a time of uncertainty for
immigrants on a national
scale, Katz said she would
continue to fight for immigrant families in the borough. Forty-nine percent of
Queens resident were born
outside of the United States.
They come to make Queens
home. We welcome immigration to the borough, she
said. Shes fighting against
hate crimes, providing immigrants with resources like
legal assistance and is urging
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to
re-open its Queens Field Office, which has been closed
for two years.
Katz didnt want to give
too much away, as she will
go into detail about the state
of the borough and its future
on Friday. To attend the SOTB
address, go to www.queensbp.
org.

Call-A-Head
is Already Ahead
of Crossbay Concerns
By Kami-Leigh Agard

Call-A-Head has been a longtime staple and supporter of

the Broad Channel community, where its headquarters
are located, but the busy business has caused some traffic
concerns as of late. Yet CallA-Head says theyre aware,
and are full-steam ahead on
improving the situation along
Crossbay Boulevard.
While traveling along the
north- and southbound lanes
on Crossbay Boulevard in Broad
Channel, you may have observed the Call-A-Head trucks
entering and exiting their compound, and some trucks parked
on the street. After a few locals
reported past traffic incidents
with these trucks and safety
concerns, especially during the
rush commuting hours, The

Rockaway Times was on the beat

to investigate the situation, and
identify what was being done to
rectify the issue.
We reached out to Kenny
Howard, vice president of CallA-Head, to address the concerns
of local residents. For example,
one driver said that his car was
totaled after an accident with
one of the trucks. Howard responded, The problem has
been solved. Since last summer,
we have worked hand-in-hand
with the 100 Precinct to resolve
this. As a team, we resolved
about 95 percent of the problem.
First and foremost, safety is and
will always be our main concern.
The Broad Channel born and
based company, Call-A-Head
is one of New York State's biggest sanitation suppliers of porta-potties for construction sites,

rock concerts, outdoor weddings and other major events.

The company was founded by
the father of current president,
Charles Howard. Howard, Sr.,
a Broad Channel resident, had
worked as a truck driver for a
portable-toilet company and
started Call-A-Head in 1976 on
what had been a gas station. In
1981, when the business had
just 150 potties, he turned it over
to his teenage son, Charles. According to VP Kenny Howard,
today the company has over 175
employees, some of whom are

Rockaway and Broad Channel

locals.
Kenny Howard laid out the
groundwork established by the
company to resolutely solve all vehicular traffic and parking issues.
He said, We have acquired additional property: a 8,000 square
foot warehouse in Valley Stream,
Long Island. We park our vehicles there. In addition, we also
recently rented two spaces in Arverne, 25,000 square foot and 5,000
square foot properties, where we
also park our trucks.

Continued on page 9

The Rockaway Times

Call-A-Head
Continued from Page 8
According to Howard, The
bike lane was a bit of an issue
because when you are a commercial enterprise, theres an
option from the City, that you
could either block the bike lane
or you could double park. Its a
very touchy situation. However
we stopped parking in the bike
lane completely.
Theyve even delegated an employee to keep a watch on traffic.
We put an employee in charge,
almost like a crossing guard, who
stands in the street and gets the
trucks in the yard as fast as possible, Howard said. From when
we open to close, he monitors the
fire hydrants, the bike lanes and
yellow lines. He makes sure that
none of our drivers park the trucks
in an illegal spot.
He continued, Between 6:307a.m., our drivers get in the trucks,
start them up and leave soon after
for the entire day. When they return between 6:30-7p.m., we have
a system in place, where we have
two drivers that basically get the
trucks into the yard. Another em-

ployee stands centered on the mall
with a safety-vest on. He monitors
the whole situation, making sure
that we prioritize which trucks
get into the yard, and ensures that
other incoming trucks are parked
legally and safely.
Howard said that the biggest
priority of the company is to stay
within the five boroughs. After
Hurricane Sandy, FEMA and
NYC Emergency Management
used our facility. They literally
came with their own equipment
to take our facilities to people in
areas Sandy devastated. Thats
how much of a necessity and
emergency it was.
He said that Call-A-Head is
trying to stay as a resource for
both organizations. They want
us to stay in NYC. So were trying to find more property so we
can achieve this. However, he
expressed the challenges for a
company of its magnitude to
accomplish this. Anywhere
else in the City would be the
same situation. Our trucks
would have to double park,
Howard said. In Howard
Beach you find trucks double
parked everywhere.

We dont park in front of peoples homes. With the Broad

Channel Athletic Club (BCAC),
we have a solid relationship. We
use their parking lot for employee parking. Weve been a member of the BCAC since day one
and we fund a lot of their projects, Howard said.
Howard also said that to
create more street parking,
Call-A-Ahead moved half of
their office staff to Whartons,
a castle-like building, also on
Crossbay Blvd. We use it as

Page 9
a satellite office. The mindset was that this move would
spread out a lot of car traffic,
and get rid of a lot more cars
on local streets.
Howard concluded by sharing his love for the community.
We are four generations from
Broad Channel. We give back to
the town tremendously. However, we are a big business now,
and there are a lot of things that

Graybeards to Honor Pat Nash, Liz Hanna

By Katie McFadden

The Graybeards are well

known for giving back to the
community. This Saturday,
January 28, at their 16th Annual Dinner Dance, the charitable group will be honoring
two well-deserving folks who
have also done positive things
for Rockaway. This years honorees are firefighter Pat Nash
and former owner of Browns
Hardware, Liz Hanna.

On Saturday night at El Caribe in Mill Basin, The Graybeards, a local charitable

group that helps those in need
in the community, will hold
their biggest fundraiser of
the year. The formal affair includes a cocktail hour, dinner,
and plenty of dancing. Dont
let the graybeard name fool
you. These folks know how to
have a good time, and it will all
be for a good cause.
This is the largest fundraiser of the year for the
Graybeards, President Joe
Keenan said. The money
raised at this dinner goes toward helping people in need
in the community. The money raised comes from ticket
sales, journal ads, a Chinese
auction, chances and more.
Last years dinner, held at
Russos, was the biggest yet,
raising more than $71,000. It
was the most successful dinner weve had, Keenan said.
This year, theyre hoping for
even better and with more

than 460 tickets sold, that

goal sounds promising.
Each year the Graybeards
select special honorees for
the annual event. This year,
firefighter Pat Nash is receiving the Don DH Hart Award.
Hart, now deceased, was a
standout member of the Graybeards who often volunteered
for different events and helped
rebuild a church in Alabama
after it was destroyed by a
hurricane. He was a very active member and did a lot of
great stuff and helped a lot
of people, so we give away a
special award in his honor,
Keenan said. Liz Hanna is being awarded the Graybeards
Special Recognition Award for
her contributions to the community through the former
Browns Hardware.
Many may remember the
story last year of Nashs selfless act of donating a kidney
to Father Jim Cunningham
of St. Francis de Sales. Nash
knew Father Jim from his days

as a young priest at Good

Shepherd, where Nash attended grammar school. The
late Timmy Stackpole, a local firefighter who passed on
9/11, had introduced them.
When Nash found that Father
Jim was in need of a kidney
transplant, Nash was tested
and found to be a match. They
went through the procedure
in March and have both recovered well. Nash explained
his decision, saying, Father
Jim is a good person and he
helps a tremendous amount
of people, I figured that by
me helping him, he could go
on to help others. Its a ripple effect. People reach out
to Father Jim when theyre in
their greatest time of need, so
by me helping him, he could
continue to help all of those
other people.
In addition to his selfless donation, Nash serves
as president of the Captain

tion. Nash knew Stackpole
from their days as young
firefighters. Nash helps organize fundraising events
for the foundation to help
keep Stackpoles memory
alive. Nash, himself, has
been with the FDNY for 16
years and works for one of
the busiest firehouses in
the city, Ladder 147 DA
PRIDE A FL ATBUSH in
Brooklyn.
When he has some free time,
Nash plays golf and basketball.
He coaches the sport at Fontbonne Hall Academy and plays
for The Graybeards basketball
league. Although he resides in
Brooklyn, Nash has family ties
to Rockaway and recently became a member of The Graybeards organization.
For Nash, being honored
by The Graybeards is humbling. Being recognized
by these guys that I have so
much respect for means a
lot to me. Its a tremendous
honor for them to go out of
their way to recognize me
when there are so many other worthy candidates that
deserve this award.
Liz Hanna, the former owner of Browns Hardware, is
receiving this years Special
Recognition Award. The Hanna family took over Browns
Hardware in 1967. Liz grew
up in the business, along with
her brother, Joe and Brian,
and her family, always went
above and beyond to provide more than just tools and
garden supplies. According
to the Graybeards, Browns
provided, friendly service,
DIY know-how, and a sense
of neighborhood pride and
accomplishment. Garden advice was free and useful even
for us brown thumb types,
and it was ok that you didnt
know a flathead from a Phillips head. They would make
sure you left the store with
the right screws for the job
at hand. Liz and her siblings
took over the store after her
father passed away in 1997.
Her brothers moved on to
other careers, and Liz ran the
store along with her cousin,

Noni. They fought through

the recession and Hurricane
Sandy, which virtually destroyed the business, but Liz
refused to give up at a time
where Browns was needed
more than ever. She rebuilt
after Sandy, but in August
2016, she decided to pass on
the torch and sell the business to another brand that
understands small communities, Mazzone Hardware.
Through it all Liz showed
what it means to persevere
and perform. She could have
walked away after Sandy and
left it all to memory and Rockaway nostalgia, but in the end
she found a way to make it
continue to live and thrive for
the community, for decades
to come, the Graybeards
said. Browns was a longtime
supporter of The Graybeards
and other charities within the
community.
Since she sold the store,
Hanna has been following her
passion, working part-time
at an animal shelter, but she
will once again work in what
was Browns, when Mazzone
Hardware reopens around
April. Hanna says the Graybeards award is a nice close to
the chapter that was Browns.
Its a very nice honor and its
the icing on the cake. Its like
bringing everything to an end
in a good way, Hanna said.
This was a stressful summer
with trying to put the business
into the right hands. For The
Graybeards to do this for me
is nice, because its like a big
party.
Tickets to The Graybeards
Dinner Dance are sold out,
but donations are always welcome. To donate or find out

Game Day

Super Bowl Sunday has become an unofficial national holiday. Everybody can
celebrate no matter what
your religion or even if you
dont like football! The Super Bowl is an event unlike
any other, as people gather
throughout the country and
make the game one of the
most watched TV events of
all time, every year. Yes, we
Americans take our annual

Super Bowl games very seriously perhaps a little too

seriously.
Case in point many of you
have probably never made
the connection, but the term
fake news, which has been
bandied about so much as of
late, got its start back with
Super Bowl 49 which featured
Deflate-Gate, a seemingly
never-ending investigation
of the New England Patriots balls, and if they were
big enough. After the kind
of hard-hitting investigative
journalism that brought us
Watergate, various and brilliant members of the fourth
estate determined that, just
maybe, the footballs Tom
Brady used were just a little
deflated from the perfectly
fine 12.5 pounds per square
inch to the possibly lethal
11.5 pounds per square inch.
And its just possible Brady

deflated them intentionally.

Or he had the ball boy do it,
during a 90-second trip to the
bathroom, all caught on tape.
Or the ball boy was just going
to the bathroom. It was never
specified if the bathroom in
question was gender-neutral,
so maybe there was more to
this issue than meets the eye.
Im still not sure. But it did
wind up in federal court so I
am certain this is very serious stuff!
Before this soft balls scandal, the NFL didnt care
much about inflated balls.
If it did, it would have kept
track of everyones balls, and
made all teams use the same
ones. But it doesnt. It lets
both teams hold their own
balls, and do whatever they
like with them, within reason. But now the NFL has to
care, because a few self-important shamus wordsmiths
with story deadlines said so,
even though most of them
probably wouldnt know the
difference between a bootleg
and a bump-and-run.
Perhaps I am being a little
too hard on them. Truth be
told, the first time I heard
the term bump-and-run, I
thought it was something
nasty a pervert did while
riding the subway. When I
asked a friend of mine who
is a football fanatic, she told
me that a bump-and-run is
when a defender hits a receiver and then goes into
pass coverage. She went on
to explain that the subway
pervert thing I was thinking
of is called frottage. At that
point I was too embarrassed
to ask what cheese had to do
with a subway perv.
In any event, like I said
somewhere above, this Super
Bowl thing is a big deal and
so I would like to make a suggestion. The Broad Channel
VFW will be holding a Super Bowl Tailgate Party on
Sunday, February 5, with the
doors opening at noon. You
are all invited to come on
down and enjoy the pre-game

afternoon hours with your

family, friends and neighbors with ice cold beers, hot
dogs and hamburgers. Of
course you will then be welcome to stay for the game itself which will kick off at 6:30
pm to cheer on the team you
have bet your February mortgage money on!
Due diligence requires that
I inform you that this event
will not be an actual tailgate party as, this year, it will
be held inside the Post in the
canteen area. This is now required by the VFWs lawyers
because the pick-up truck we
had parked in the backyard
last year for the Super Bowl
50 tailgate party accidentally rolled into Jamaica Bay,
and Matty Conklin nearly
drowned, as he claimed. He
said that for the life of him,
he could not figure out how
to open the tailgate without
dropping the beer he was
holding!
Its for a great cause and,
as always, all donations and
proceeds will go to support
the Posts activities in supporting our disabled veterans. So spread the word
about this event and come on
down yourself on Super Bowl
Sunday.
Looking forward
to seeing you there. Maybe someone can explain this
"frottage" cheese thing to me.
Broad Channel, why would
anyone want to live anywhere
else?

Pheffer Amato is Sworn In

Its official. Stacey Pheffer Amato is our new assemblywoman.
Among a crowd of dignitaries,
elected officials, civic leaders, supporters, friends, and family members in PS 232s auditorium, Pheffer Amato was officially sworn into
office on January 22.
Sundays ceremony began with
Girl Scout Troop #4493 reciting the
Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a
performance of the National Anthem by Scholars Academy MS/
HS Chorus. Rabbi Yaakov Bender, dean of Yeshiva Darchei Torah
then delivered the Invocation.

Honorable Augustus Auggie

Agate, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, served as master of
ceremonies. U.S. Senator Charles
Schumer regaled the crowd with
an everything is the same address, poking fun at the Assemblywomans mother, Queens
County Clerk Audrey Pheffer, and
concluding that he knows Pheffer Amato will continue the great
work of her predecessors by fighting for the residents of the 23rd Assembly District.
Elected officials were on hand
to offer congratulatory speeches,

including Congressman Joseph

Crowley, Congressman Gregory
Meeks, NYS Comptroller Thomas
DiNapoli, NYS Assembly Speaker
Carl Heastie, NYC Public Advocate
Letitia A. James, NYC Comptroller
Scott Stringer, Queens Borough
President Melinda Katz, NYS Senator Joseph Addabbo, Jr., and NYS
Senator James Sanders. Former
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder also
provided words of wisdom and
support. Pheffer Amatos mother,
Audrey, officiated the Oath of Office as she was sworn in.
Pheffer Amato expressed thanks
to all of those who supported her
along the way, including her family. I am doing this for you and for

Page 13
your future! she said to her children. She then mentioned every
community in her district and
pledged to represent them all, and
fight to a better quality of life for all
residents. Following, a benediction was then presented by Father
Francis Colamaria, pastor at St.
Helens Roman Catholic Church.
I am deeply touched by the
outpouring of support and affection from everyone who took the
time to attend my inauguration. I
believe the best way I can show my
gratitude is by upholding the oath
that I took on Sunday, said Pheffer Amato.

Secret Response

Boyle Rebuke

Dear Editor:
(Regarding last week's Boyleing Points).
The Ringling Bros. Circus ended
because it too was, in fact, barbaric.
And that is not friggin' awesome. If
we teach kids that animals are there
for our entertainment and pleasure,
then they will grow up thinking that
the world owes them something,
and everyone and everything is for
their amusement. If we teach them
that animals are sentient, intelligent
creatures that experience love, fear
and suffering, kids will grow to respect the planet and the life it gives.
Humanity is not where it is today
because we have too much respect,

Dear Editor:
(Regarding the Secret Group of
Rockaway Women article).
A long time ago women received the right to vote, and if I'm
not mistaken. They're mistaken.
They have successfully run for
public office, rose to high ranks in
the military, have become CEOs
of major corporations and are capable and have a right to do anything in this country a man can
do. And they can do a few things
a man cannot do, like give birth
and have an abortion. Personally,
I have never thought of women
as being either inferior or treated
less kindly than men, and if either
sex wants to whine about their
privilege..., but to complain that
"Rockaway is an embarrassing red
spot in the middle of NYC," these
secret women demean their message by criticizing those they don't
agree with. They want their message to be recognized, but only

"their" message. They contradict

themselves.
Oh, and one other thing, if they
don't want to live in "red" Rockaway, they can always move to a
blue spot where they don't have to
live in fear.
Seamus Lang
Dear Editor:
(Regarding the Secret Group of
Rockaway Women article).
I applaud the Rockaway women
who have banded together in opposition to Trump, but regret that
they feel they have to meet in secret.
Secrecy, fear and intimidation are
what demagogues count on, and I
believe that the only way to counter
them is to publicly raise our voices
in opposition. I believe that by publicizing their group, these women
will attract many more like-minded
members of our community.
Carol Scott
Dear Editor:
I want to respond to this paragraph taken from your recent article about a secret (liberal) group
of women in Rockaway.
We became a secret group because there are a lot of women who

The Rockaway Times

are born and raised here with families who are very pro-Trump, said
one member. We just wanted to
come to a safe place where we could
voice ourselves without backlash or
being shunned. Another attendee
added, Rockaway is an embarrassing red spot in the middle of NYC.
The people on my entire block are
Trump supporters.
I find the above paragraph from
that article to be a "shot across the
bow" to us real locals, it's filled
with vinegar. Its the same self-absorbed behavior we've come to
know from many liberals. I know
to most of the newbies moving
here from Williamsburg via the
Midwest somewhere, we are a
bunch of knuckle draggers. It says
we are embarrassing too. Nice to
know. How wonderfully hypocritical it is, to paint this town as
embarrassing because of how a
majority may have voted, without
caring maybe why. I wonder how
many of the women in this secret
group have a new business here?
I'm willing to guess quite a few.
Maybe you should think about
who is supporting your store especially during the quiet winter

months here. Think about making an entire population of this
town feel welcomed to use your
services or shop in your boutiques. Or you could call us embarrassing. Your call.
I will also say that there should
be a certain respect paid to the
people who have lived here for
generations: those who are born
and raised here. We've been here
through the bad times and have a
true love of Rockaway, which you
will never ever have or understand.
Take a seat and be respectful.
I will let you know this born and
raised Rockaway person is afraid
to publicly voice their moderately conservative views, along with
many of my friends. They are
afraid of a backlash as well from
liberals. It goes both ways.
Growing up in Far Rock, maybe some newbies from this group
don't know where that, is but us
real locals call the east end: downtown or Far Rock. I most definitely am a person who leans more
towards a "left" point of view. But
I have some conservative views

sprinkled in as well. I voted for
Obama. I feel he let me down.
I did not vote for Trump, but I
agree with some of the things he
wants to do. I have a mind that
thinks independently and I always look at both sides of things.
Maybe some of the women in this
secret group should try that out.
I used to think the Democrats
were the good guys. The Jedis.
However, the last eight years have
changed the Democratic Party
into mostly (I won't lump all into
a box like all of Rockaway was
lumped together by the above
statement), a finger-wagging, insufferable, intolerant, socialist,
and hypocritical bunch of people. Yes, you secret group (most)
of you are intolerant.
Name Withheld
Stop The Bus (SBS)

Dear Editor:
SBS is the worst idea that could
happen to South Queens.
As I have read, Rockaway needs
much better transportation.
Something else should be done,
not SBS. The whole idea will destroy our corridor. We are unique
in the fact that no other place

where SBS is, only has one way to

go from south to north. The traffic is already so congested with
so many UPS trucks, large flatbed
trucks, other large trucks, large
and small vans, so many school
buses, and of course all the cars.
We do NOT have a very big bus
service. If you have to wait for a
bus, you can wait up to 45 minutes,
even longer. During the morning
rush hour, there are more busses.
There is never a problem getting to
the train station. The buses move
smoothly with the rest of the traffic
at that time.
Why do they want to waste all
this money, upset our lives and
put us in such a dangerous situation? Removing our bus stops is
the biggest waste of money and
it will make a mess of our lives.
Having people wait in the middle of the street and taking away
more traffic lanes is insane. This
is something we DO NOT NEED
or want. Our traffic will be at a
standstill. Remember, there is no
alternative route.
SBS will never be something
good for the hard-working people
of south Queens, it will be harmful.
Why don't you put it on Queens

Page 15
Blvd., where most of the people
don't have cars and there are many
more people who use buses?
Madeline Lovallo
Park That Idea

Dear Editor:
The City should immediately demap the seven acres of "park land"
covertly amputated from the Rockaway Beach Railroad, scrap the
ill-conceived and unwanted SBS
plan, and instead reconstitute fast
electric rail service. Buses are CO2
polluting and very limited in passenger capacity. Dead-end technology is certainly NOT the way of
the future. Neither are skateboards,
rickshaws, and roller skates. The
notion of the City throwing over
$100 million at the "Queensway,"
which will see only limited use by
only a very narrow bandwidth audience, is absurd on its face from a
cost/benefit perspective. Queens
has an exploding population, and
is in desperate need of improved
mass transit. How about better
utilization of the massive parks already in Queens: Flushing Meadows, Cunningham, Alley Pond,
etc.?

this is the migration that happens after the holidays around
here and many other places:
its the migration of kids heading back to college!
Some of the upper classmen
drive back; others go by train,
bus or plane. There are some
that get a ride from good ol
mom and dad. If the migrating
one is the oldest, then there
are still young ones hanging
around the house and as they
say, the beat goes on. If the
migrator is the youngest, then
the house transitions into an
oasis of peace and calm that
will be enjoyed for the next
few months before the Rockaway St. Patricks Day parade
comes to town.
Ringling Brothers has decided to end its circus after 146
years. All the animals will be
placed in homes and cared for
over the rest of their lives. The
workers and the rest of us, not
so much!
When our college-aged kids
are living with us, under the big
top known as home, we worry
about when they are coming
home at night, who they are
hanging out with, whats going on in their lives. But when
they go off to college, there is
a tendency to sleep soundly
through the night and simply
text a couple of times a week.
I guess the feeling is: hey,
they are at college, all is safe
and sound. The house is quiet
and we have it all to ourselves.
There is no one laying in bed
til two in the afternoon, or
watching God-awful television
shows from the couch eating
chips and slurping a cherry-coke. Because we have our
kingdoms to ourselves, we be-

lieve that everything is all right

everywhere.
The memories of Friday and
Saturday night parties at colleges and universities must be
too distant a memory for many.
But I am pretty sure they still
happen. The thinking is, you
gotta giveem wings, right?
And college is a great test pilot system, not only for kids,
who have to learn how to get
up on their own, do laundry,
feed themselves, and oh yeah,
do schoolwork. Its also a great
test pilot system for adults! Its
not easy taking a step back and
re-learning what to do with free
time! When you leave a room
and come back to it, everything
is where you left it. When you
wash dishes and put them away,
they dont magically reappear
in the sink again. There are usually only one or two towels in
play at any one time. Laundry
becomes a once a week project,
rather than an everyday thing.
The first month is heaven! But
then we start to miss those little devils, and we look forward
to their return, and then we
realize its only February. The
bonds are strong that bind.
And before you know it, the
circus is back in town. No,
not Ringling Brothers, but St.
Patricks Day! And the parade
brings everyone home again,
and after the hugs and kisses
and corned beef and cabbage,
the kiddos say, Just going out
for a little while. The first text
is usually launched about 1
am, followed by intervals of
texts and calls, until finally the
dawn brings them all home
again.
And then the migration
happens all over again. And
you know what, we probably
wouldnt have it any other way
despite our worries and complaining about it. I know for
sure the Syrians would love to
have this as their main problem, so would the Mexicans,
probably so would Ringling
Brothers, and in the end so do
we.

Vaping
By Peter Galvin, MD

It is generally agreed by
health experts that smoking
cigarettes is by far the most
dangerous thing someone can
do to themselves. Smoking
is directly linked to cancers,
heart disease, and a host of
potentially lethal consequences. Perhaps it is for this reason
that vaping, or smoking e-cigarettes, is gaining in popularity,
especially among young people. Many think that vaping is
safer than smoking cigarettes,
which is only partially true.
E-cigarettes do not contain the
4600 known carcinogens found
in tobacco smoke, however

the fluid in e-cigarettes is not

water. In most cases the fluid
is ethylene glycol, a chemical
coolant and freeze preventer
used in boating and RV maintenance. So what are the consequences of vaping, particularly among teenagers?
Several months ago a study
by several medical schools was
published and the findings
were rather alarming. Nationally, vaping is reported by 37
percent of 10th graders. What
has not been known is how
many teenagers who vape, progress to combustible cigarette
smoking. This study attempted
to answer that question. They

looked at students in 10 public

high schools in southern California. Of 4,100 eligible students, 3,396 provided assent
and parental consent to enroll
in the study. Although the rate
of past 30-day vaping was low
overall, the rate of cigarette
smoking increased with the
frequency of reported vaping.
Among frequent vapers (vaped
for three or more consecutive days), the rate of cigarette
smoking was nearly 20 percent.
In other words, using e-cigarettes frequently led to smoking combustible cigarettes,
and led directly to moderate
to heavy cigarette smoking six
months later.
The study did not look at the
reasons these young people
started vaping, so more research is needed. Some reasons for vaping should be obvious however. Young people
think it makes them look cool
or perhaps older. Peer pressure
is also undoubtedly a factor.
Most teenagers consider themselves immortal or impervious
to harm. Most of us only begin
to consider our own mortal-

Page 19
ity well into our 30s or 40s.
Someone who started vaping
or smoking as a teenager is well
into serious nicotine addiction
by that age. More education is
needed, both in school and at
home. Teens need to be taught
the dangers and consequences
of starting a behavior that can
lead to a lifetime of addiction
and negative health implications. In other words, they
need our help to see the light.

Lets Talk

ABOUT ELECTRICITY
By Kathy Nicolosi

If you are sitting in a room

somewhere reading this, look
around and notice all of the outlets on the wall, the lighting fixtures on the ceiling, lamps, etc.
They all either carry or run on
electricity. Now lets consider one
of those outlets or even a lamp
that is not on right now. Think
about this for a minute. All you
have to do is flip the switch, and
the lamp goes on, or plug your
smartphone into the wall outlet and presto, the current that
is in the wires running through
your house starts to charge your
phone. Electricity, quite an amazing discovery.
There is an even more amazing
form of energy, one that we all carry within us, which is no less real
than electricity. I am talking about
our own divine energy, universal life force, or spiritual energy.
This energy that we carry within

us is available to us whenever we
choose to plug into its outlet and
allow it to charge our batteries, or
light up our world. The question
is, just how do we do that? There
are many ways to connect to your
divine energy, be it meditation,
random acts of kindness, following your heart instead of the dramas in your mind, to name a few.
Connecting to our divine energy
is really much more of a natural
process than we think. Its nothing
supernatural. It is actually our natural state of being. As we live our
day-to-day lives, we get caught up
in the drama of the day, the drama
at work or at home, and we lose
touch with who we truly are deep
inside.
One of my favorite quotes is,
we are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are
spiritual beings having a human
experience. - Pierre Teilhard de
Chardin.
When you respond from your
divine energy to things around

To advertise in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES call 718-634-3030 ads@RockawayTimes.com

you, you will also find that your

energy does not get depleted. Just
like the electricity in your wires
behind your walls supplies a never-ending source of energy to
whatever you plug into your outlets, also, the divine energy within
us is always there for us to use and
tap into.
Heres another way to think
about this. Lets divide ourselves
into two selves, our small self
and our Higher Self. Now doing things from our small self
is kind of like using one of those
hand-crank radios. We have to
keep turning the handle to get
power. We are totally relying on
our own small finite energy to
keep the radio going. Now, lets
think about our Higher Self, the
one that is always connected to
the main source of energy. Just
like your electrical outlet, all you
need to do is plug into it to have
a never-ending source of energy.
This concept of giving and doing
things from your Higher Self,

instead of your small self, will

reward you with an abundance
of energy and enthusiasm to do
the task at hand. The important
component here is to be able
to relinquish control, do things
from your heart, and dont do
anything if youre not sure what
to do. There is a lot more behind
this, but this is a start in at least
recognizing a few very important
things regarding our small self
and our Higher Self.
Once again, find the things that
lead you back to your own source
of divine energy, be it meditation,
yoga, running, reading uplifting
books or articles, giving to others, petting your dog, listening to
music or playing music. Whatever gets you to that divine place
within and helps you connect to
the abundant source of divine
energy, should be a part of your
daily life. What is a soul? Its like
electricity - we dont really know
what it is, but its a force that can
light a room. Ray Charles

Time To Insulate
Those Attics
By Artie Wallace

You may not be thinking

about attic insulation right
now, but this is the perfect
time of year to do it. An attic that isnt insulated can be
costly year round. In the summer, the heat makes it harder
to keep the house cool. And
in the winter a lot of heat escapes through the attic.
Also the working conditions
make now the prime time to
insulate. In a few months its
going to be getting warmer, on
a 85 to 90 degree day, the attic
could be as hot as 140 to 150
degrees. You wouldnt want to
be working up there then.
The most important thing
to think about is safety. Having a few boards (or strips of
plywood) laying across the
beams could easily prevent
you from falling through the

ceiling below. Safety glasses

and gloves are a must when
working with insulation, and
dont forget the long sleeves
to protect your arms. If installing unsleeved insulation,
a mask should be worn.
Laying the insulation is
the easy part. Most insulation comes in rolls or batts
(lengths). Simply lay it between the beams. Be sure
to keep it at least six inches
away from recessed lighting
and dont cover any vents.
If youre using roll insulation, it is better to measure
the length of the space and
pre-cut the insulation. You
can always make minor cuts
in place. If you have to use
two pieces to fill a bay, be
sure to overlap them by eight
inches.
If you store things in the
attic, using insulation that

The art of

comes with plastic sleeving is

best. If you dont store things
in the attic, most (faced or
unfaced) attic insulations will
work fine. All attics are a little
different, so research your in-

sulation job for the best way

to do it before starting.

A TRIBUTE TO
FAR ROCKAWAY
BELLES 1906

Chicken Cacciatore
By Sharon Feldman

Written by Emil R. Lucev, Sr. &

his daughter Katie Lucev

A Belle is a popular and attractive girl or woman whose

charm and beauty make her a
favorite. This is the only large
letter postcard of Far Rockaway
found thus far that features

candid photos of Far Rockaway Belles inside each letter.

The short sentiment describes
them as being Gold Diggers,
back in the day. The sender of
this card stated that, Its No
Lie, and signed it using only
his initials, J.M.W. I wonder
why?!?!?!?

NY Medical
SKIN SOLUTIONS

Ingredients
1 whole chicken cut in pieces
1 red bell pepper
8-10 medium size button mushrooms (add more if small)
1 onion
4 cloves of garlic
20 black olives (pitted)
2 tablespoons of capers
6 anchovies
4 sprigs of thyme
1 teaspoon of chopped rosemary
(or dried)
1 handful of fresh parsley
3 tablespoons plain flour
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup of dry white wine
1 cups of tomato pure
chopped chili (depending on
taste)
Directions:
Coat chicken pieces in plain
flour. Heat the olive oil in an oven-proof pot. Add your chicken
pieces and brown evenly on both

The Rockaway Times

sides. Do half the chicken at a
time. Add the thyme leaves. Take
out once brown (chicken doesnt
need to be cooked).
Chop the onion finely and add
to the same pot on very low heat.
Crush and add your garlic. Mix
well with wooden spoon, scrape
off the brown bits from the bottom. Add the rosemary, finely
chopped. Add the anchovies.
Chop the chili very fine and add
to pot.
Slice the mushrooms into six
wedges and add to pot and brown
(add a little more olive oil). Slice
your bell pepper lengthwise and
fairly thin, add to pot. Add the
olives. Add the capers. Add the
white wine. Add the tomato puree
and bring to a simmer. Add your
chicken pieces. Place in oven and
bake at 350F for 40 minutes.
Rest 15 minutes and serve. Serve
with freshly chopped parsley.

Life With Our

Artistic Child
By Kami-Leigh Agard

State-Funded Special-Needs
Social Services
A REVOLVING DOOR WITH NO
COMMITMENT
Since 2015, our home has
been a revolving door, with a
stream of direct support professionals (DSPs) provided by
NY States Office for People
with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). These DSPs
were sent by an agency we
elected, to help care for the
needs and social development
of our daughter. Initially when
we started on this journey, we
were naively excited about
the wonderful miracles and
much-needed help anticipated ahead.
Just a little background
about OPWDD. In 1972, investigative journalist Geraldo Rivera uncovered a host
of deplorable conditions at
Willowbrook, a state-supported institution for individuals
with intellectual disabilities
in Willowbrook, Staten Island.
He reported on overcrowding,
inadequate sanitary facilities,
and physical and sexual abuse
of residents by the school's
staff. (Watch Geraldos documentary on YouTube. Just be
prepared and keep a bucket
near-by. I literally threw up).
After much public outcry,
OPWDD was created in 1978
as the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental
Disabilities. Since then, it has
become one of the NYS largest agencies. They are responsible for coordinating services
for more than 128,000 New
Yorkers with developmental
disabilities, including intel-

lectual disabilities, cerebral

palsy, Down syndrome, autism, and other neurological
impairments. In 2010, NYS
changed the agencys official
name, eliminating the term
mental retardation from its
new title.
To get these services from
OPWDD, we went through
the process of getting a Medicaid waiver for our daughter.
Though we had our own private insurance, the Medicaid
waiver was necessary for her
to get covered. She had several psychological and psychosocial evaluations. My
daughters dad and I together took a lot of time off work
to get this all done. Finally,
after an entire year, she was
approved.
However, back to the revolving door. When I say revolving, I mean these DSPs came
in and out, and disappeared!
The DSPs provided by the
agency we elected were all
from the same demographic
group: young girls with only a
high school education, receiving a minimum wage of $11 an
hour, totally non-invested in
the critical and intrinsic commitment to the job and role
they were playing in our autistic daughters life.
Now dont get me wrong, I
loved each of these girls and
treated them like family. I
would take them on trips to
the library, boardwalk and local restaurants.

Page 29

Here were the problems:

The first girl was amicable, but
definitely had her own image
issues. She would spend hours
in the restroom doing her hair.
One day she called me to advocate on her behalf because
she was not paid. I pleaded
with her boss to please send
her paycheck. She quit soon
after. The second girl was only
19 and had a baby. She showed
up only one day, then called to
say she got into a car accident.
She was out for a month, then
never came back. Her supervisor said she reported that the
commute was too long. Rockaway was like the other end of
the world, she said. The last
girl, who I loved, mentored
and treated like family, one
day just never came back.
All of these girls complained
about the same thing: the
commute to Rockaway and
their salary. The last one even
said that she thought being a
DSP was better than flipping
burgers. However, note that
some fast food workers make
$15 an hour. DSPs make only
$11 an hour.

In a recent meeting, the coordinators from the agency

expressed their exasperations.
One said, Many agencies are
begging Governor Andrew
Cuomo to put more money
into OPWDD to raise the minimum wages for DSPs. Caring
for a special-needs person
takes a lot of heart and commitment. It is an emotionally and physically demanding
job. Some individuals can be
physically aggressive. Some
young children are runners.
Our workers have to constantly maintain the safety of their
clients. Eleven dollars an hour
is not enough.
I am grateful that these programs are available. However,
what is the profit in the long
run? A revolving door with no
commitment.
I talk about autism to open
doors into the reality of our
lives as caregivers, build understanding, tolerance and
growth of our artistic children. Please do share your
thoughts and stories by emailing ourartisticchild@outlook.

THE ROCK TIMES TEE
Were pretty sure The Rockaway Times tee hasnt been
seen in Koh Lanta before, (we
had to look it up on a map.
Most of you know that its an
island district off the coast of
Thailand). Jackie Kenel and
a band of friends travelled to
paradise and made sure to
bring the Rock Times t-shirts
on the trip. Apparently, they

ran into some Thai tailors who

gave the t-shirts a pirates flair.

The Idea Guys

Dont Brush
This Idea Off

By RT Pepperwinkle

Ideas can come at any time,

though so many seem to
strike in the loo. And so was
the case when I was brushing my teeth the other day.
Maybe youve seen ads for
the Dollar Shave (commentary: theyre funny). Shave
Club is a subscription-based
business in which you sign
up to have razors mailed to
you on a regular basis. I think
its a monthly subscription,
though Im guessing they offer a Wolfman package for
guys who have a 5 oclock
shadow by noon.
So as I was running my
toothbrush under the running water, it occurred to
me that there might be gold

in a toothbrush subscription business. Toothbrushes

would be designed like razor
blades so you could just slide
off the worn-out brush. Or
you could have a selection of
firm, soft and hard bristles.
You know, sometimes you
want to beat your gums up, so
you slide off the mushy, soft
bristle and click in the one
thats like a small bed of nails.
There are toothbrush subscription businesses already,
but I dont think they have
the pop-off cartridge device
like a razor. With a supply of
different bristles your toothbrush could stay as minty
fresh as the toothpaste.
And with your million-dollar smile might come a couple of million bucks!

SAFE TRAVEL
AND
THE CAR SEAT

T he healthy
child

By Dr. Jon Sarnoff

In our three New York

City locations, we receive
a variety of car seat questions. How should I take
my child in a taxi or forhire service? Can I take
my car seat on the plane? I
would like to take this opportunity to review the basic car seat rules and then
answer some questions
about traveling with a baby
in the big city.
First, lets review the five
best-practice recommendations in the 2011 American Academy of Pediatric
Guidelines. First, All infants and toddlers should
ride in a rear-facing car
safety seat (CSS) until they

The Rockaway Times

are two years of age, or until they reach the highest

weight or height allowed
by the manufacturer of
their CSS. Two years may
seem like a long time but
not if you compare it to the
Swedish model. Sweden
has perhaps the best safety record when it comes to
kids and cars. In Sweden,
children ride in a rear-facing car seat until four years
of age!
The second guideline
states that children two
years or older, or those
younger than two years
who have outgrown the
rear-facing
weight
or
height limit for their CSS,

Scaffolding Comes
Down

should use a for ward-facing CSS with a harness

for as long as possible, up
to the highest weight or
height allowed by the manufacturer of their CSS.
Many convertible car seats
have a higher weight or
height limit in the for ward
facing position.
The
third
guideline
states that all children
whose weight or height is
above the for ward-facing
limit for their C SS should
use
a
belt-positioning
booster seat until the vehicle lap-and-shoulder seat
belt fits properly, typically
when they have reached 4
feet 9 inches in height and
are between eight and 12
years of age. Your child is
ready to graduate from the
booster seat when the lap
belt lies across the upper
thighs and the shoulder
belt crosses the middle of
the chest. Also, children
should be tall enough
to sit back comfortably
while both feet touch the
ground.
The
fourth
guideline
states, when children
are old enough and large
enough to use the vehicle seat belt alone, they
should always use lap-

and-shoulder seat belts for

optimal protection. The
final guideline states, all
children younger than 13
years should be restrained
in the rear seat of vehicles
for optimal protection.
In New York City, taxis
are exempt from laws regarding car seats and seatbelts. We strongly encourage that parents follow
the best-practice guidelines when traveling with
a child. Uber has started
a program called Uber
family. If you have a child
who is at least 12 months
old and 22 pounds, Uber
will provide a for ward facing car seat upon request.
A child is too big for this
program, if they are over
40 pounds or 52 inches.
The Uber family program does not specifically
follow guidelines outlined
above, but it does provide
more protection than no
car seat at all.
When traveling by air,
you should follow the
same best-practice guidelines that you would in a
car. Check your car seat
instructions to make sure
your seat is compliant with
the FAA . I hope this helps
and safe travels!

The doctors you love.

Now in the neighborhood you live!

Can you taste the chicken in a

basket? Or smell the prime rib?
You may be imagining that, but
this photo of the Harbor Light
is 100 percent real. Some of
the scaffolding came down
last week, and the restaurant

seems to be making significant

progress in its rebuild. Its still
too early to say when it might
reopen, but we can all agree,
the sooner, the better!

Take a Winter Plunge

to Benefit Local Teen
Dig out your swim suits, and
join a stampede of folks in the
17th Annual Take the Plunge
event to help Annie McMahons family offset expenses
for her lung transplant.
Annie suffers from cystic fibrosis, an insidious disease
with no cure that causes thick,
sticky mucus to form in the
lungs and pancreas, triggering
chronic infections. According
to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, over 30,000 people in the
U.S. live with the disease (more
than 70,000 worldwide).
After having a lung transplant, it has not been an easy
road for Annie and her family.
However, Annie is a chipper
and positive teen with a huge
fan base. The McMahons have
family roots in Rockaway. Annies mother, Theresa McMahon, grandmother and sister live in Rockaway, and her
mother lives in Breezy Point.
This year, the Plunge will

take place on Saturday, February 4 at The Colony Theater,

200 Bayside Avenue in Breezy
Point. Registration starts at
1p.m. Plungers get free admission and a goody bag with
a minimum of a $75 donation. Suggested donation for
landlubbers is $50. After the
Plunge, warm up by joining
the after-party, featuring music styling by DJ James Tubridy,
and of course, good grog and
food.
All proceeds go to Annie and
her familys fundraising initiative with the organization,
HelpHOPELive. Please make

CROM
For The Cure

CROM is aiming to kick

childhood cancers butt.
From now until Sunday, January 29, they are hosting
a special challenge called
CROM for the Cure. The local
gym is teaming up with Penn
State THON to raise money
for children with cancer.
THON is a student-run philanthropy group committed
to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted
by childhood cancer. All proceeds raised this week will
go directly towards providing
financial support for the families of children undergoing
treatment at Hershey Medical
Center, as well as funding for
critical research all in pursuit of a cure.
CROM is helping the cause
by challenging its members
and coaches, and the public
is welcome to donate to the
cause. At the gym, located at

217 Beach 92nd Street, there

will be buckets with pictures
of each coach. For every
dollar donated, the coach
must perform one a CromPlex. Coach Liz Kimmeth
describes this as a combination move of knees to feet,
into a reverse burpee, into a
regular burpee followed immediately into a tuck jump.
Its basically a burpee on
steroids. The gym will also
have one bucket with no
picture on it. You have the
ability to nominate any gym
member to join the coaches
in this activity. Write down
the name and the amount
of burpees you want them to
do, donate a dollar for each
burpee, and place the paper
and the money in the bucket. At the end of the week,
the nominated members
will join coaches in the challenge.

Marine Parkway Bridge

Got You Stuck?
UPGRADES THE REASON
By Kami-Leigh Agard

Locals have expressed their

dire consternation with the
huge delays on the Marine
Parkway Bridge. Some have
even posted photos and comments on Facebook, as they
sit in bumper-to-bumper
traffic on the bridge, before
entering the bridge, and exiting the bridge.
The Rockaway Times got
the 411 from a representative from the Metro Transit
Authority (MTA) Bridges and
tunnels unit.
This was the MTA representatives response to our
query: As we have previously explained to the community and via press releases,
the original lift mechanisms
on the 79-year-old bridge
are being replaced and up-

graded, as well as structural

painting. This work requires
use of a large crane that remains positioned for certain
durations on the roadway
causing a lane closure in either direction. There is work
going on day and night. This
work needs to be done, and
completed before the spring/
summer seasons when traffic
volume increases substantially. We appreciate the patience of our customers as we
proceed with this critical improvement work so its done
on or ahead of schedule.
Rockaway locals traveling
on the MPB, be aware that
the situation may perpetuate for the next few months.
Hopefully the MTA keeps
their promise to make traveling on the MPB easy sailing
from Spring.
