Within the first Pasuk of

this weeks Parsha, Va'era, both of
G-d's names are used,
"
"
"God spoke to Moses, and
He said to him, "I am the Lord."
There is an idea that the
name " "bears the
connotation of judgment while the
name " "connotes mercy and
compassion. At dierent points in
the Torah each name is used.
However, it is not common for
both names to be used in the same
sentence.
The context of this pasuk
is very important in order to
understand the meaning of using
these two names consecutively.
After this pasuk, G-d proceeds to
instruct Moshe as to what to say to
the Jewish people so that they will
believe Moshe is the means to
their freedom. This is a pivotal
moment in the life of Moshe as
well as the rest of the Jewish
nation. Moshe continues to doubt
his ability to free the Jewish people
and talk to Pharoh, and the Jews
felt as though G-d had forgotten
them; many of them lost faith. The
moment in which Moshe talks to
the Jewish people and explains that
G-d has listened to their prayers
and He is going to save them is the
first moment of their redemption,
the first step in the process. This
was the moment that would lead to
the rest of the history of the
Jewish people. Despite the fact

that the Jews did not listen to

Moshe and he returned to Hashem
disheartened, the process of Yetziat
Mitzrayim and the coming together
as a nation begun. But, before this
occurred, G-d shared an important
message utilizing his two names.
The names symbolized the idea
that in order to exist as a nation, we
needed to understand the
importance of balance in the world,
both judgment and compassion.
With just one or the other, the
order of the world would not
function.
G-d is trying to teach us
that we must lead are lives with a
balance of these two
characteristics, that the two should
be in harmony with one another
before we can continue on to
becoming Bnei Yisrael.

This week in Jewish

History: 27 Tevet
Yahrtzeit of Rabbi Samson Rafael
Hirsch (1808-1888), the leader of
Torah Judaism in Germany during
the tumultuous times of
Enlightenment. Rabbi Hirsch argued
that the era of Enlightenment meant
not that Jews should abandon
Jewish practice, but that religious
freedom was an opportunity to
observe Judaism without
persecution and ridicule. He
promoted a philosophy of "Torah im
Derech Eretz" -- combining Torah
with the modern world. Rabbi
Hirsch's written works include: a sixvolume commentary on the Torah;
Horeb, a philosophical analysis of
the 613 mitzvot; and an
etymological analysis of the Hebrew
language.
