GENERAL TOLERANCES INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION “The purpose of this book isto explain and define, tho tarms and symbols used by Engineer jing. The detail and assembly drawings are the means by which a designer can convey his ‘message, The drawings are for the purpose of manufacture or aesembly of a product. When the terms and symbols ofa drawing ae fully understood the finished product wil ep the drawing and be made right the frst time, ont ‘The definitions and significance of terms associsted withthe subjaet of aecaptable variatione are covered in the following pages. Basic dimension: A dimension on the drawing as basic is a theoretical value usa to describe the exact size, shepe of location ofa feature I is used es a bass from which permissible varietions are established by tolerances on other dimensions or notes, 1.2. REFERENCE dimension is a dimension without tolerance used for informational purposes only and does not govern manufacturing or inepeetion operations. Reference dimensions are Indicated on the draw- Ing by the abbreviation “REF” directly following or under the dimension. See Figure I it 15° Fae et ete B the drawing by @ wavy Tine beneath the dimen sion (see 75 DIM. in Fig. 1), FIGURE 1 (INCH) 1.4.
