Important ideas that I want to remember

The first important idea that I want to remember came from the article Are
Canadian kids too tired to move?. This article mentioned that, Only 9% of Canadian
students aged 5 to 17 get the 60 minutes of heart-pumping activity they need each
day (Participation, 2016, p.4). This impacted me because I realized that teachers
overcrowd a wide range of homework and other types of activities. I realized that
students aged 5-17 need sixty minutes of high levels of vigorous physical activities.
These activities should be integrated into a classroom at least three days a week. Students
need to get their hearts pumping instead of sitting down on the chairs in the classroom
(Participation, 2016). As a future educator, I want to integrate Daily Physical Activity
into my classroom at least three times a week. This will give students an opportunity to
partake in vigorous physical activities in a fun and engaging way. In addition, I want to
integrate physical education at least two to three times a week in order to give students an
opportunity to move their bodies in the gym or in an outdoor environment. I believe that
taking students outside can be a great way to engage students in participating in physical
education.

The second important idea that I want to remember is that educators are allowing
students to develop unhealthy habits. Through in class discussions, I learned that students
sit all day at school during lessons and they sit on the bus when going home. Students are
not developing a habit of moving. After watching the video Standup Australia during
class, I realized that sitting down can increase the risk of death. Also, it can increase
obesity and a health decrease. I was deeply impacted by this video because I did not
realize that sitting down was detrimental. I automatically though about how much I sat
down throughout my elementary school experience and was completely shocked. Based
on the video, I want to make sure that students are getting enough physical activity
instead of sitting down all the time. Also, I want to make sure that students are getting
enough sleep and breakfast in the morning because this is something that can support
their well-being as well. Through in class discussions, I learned that it is also important to
decrease screen time and sugar in-take as well.

The third important idea that I want to remember is if I can get students to
participate in running; this also allows students to participate in basketball, volleyball and
tennis as well. I realized that it is important to give students an opportunity to develop
healthy active living skills and allow them to see that the purpose is not to be athletes. As
a future educator, I want to give students an opportunity to participate in games that will
build on skills such as running, throwing, catching etc. When students grasp these skills
they will be able to eventually play sports such as basketball, soccer and hockey in the
future. I realized during my elementary school experiences that I did not learn the
necessary skills before playing sports. For instance, I played hockey in grade four without
learning the necessary skills. This is the reason why I did not enjoy hockey as a child
because I did not build the skills that I needed in order to effectively play. During my

!
practicum experiences, I see students playing basketball without building the skills that
they need in order to play the sport. For example, students need to learn a wide range of
skills such as running, communication, collaboration, balance, eye-hand coordination,
movement, posture, target, throwing, catching etc. Teachers can prepare students by
allowing them to participate in games that foster these types of skills in order to be
successful in basketball. Also, territorial or invasion types of games would be good.
Lastly, games such as Monkey in the Middle would be a great game to teach skills that
are required in basketball.

The fourth important idea that I would like to remember is the rotational station
activities that I learned during class. For instance, I really enjoyed participating in
different station activities such as Yoga. I like that there were instructions at each station
and that there was a timer so that students can move from one activity to the next. Ive
never seen activities such as Yoga being implemented in physical education. I would like
to incorporate Yoga in my future practice. Also, I recognized that students are very
focused on the activities, and no one has time to look at each other. Students feel are
more willing to participate when they feel safe and when no one is looking at them. I
realized that there are sometimes self-esteem complications in junior grades, and these
station type activities can reduce other individuals from looking at them. Another activity
that I enjoyed was Scatsculator where a pair of students have to do the rock, paper,
scissors movements. Afterwards, the winner has to do a squat. I believe that it is really
motivating for students if the winner has to do a squat. Typically, in classrooms the loser
usually has to do a squat. This can decrease motivation for students to partake in physical
activity if they keep losing.

Things I would like to know more about

The first thing that I would like to know more about is how to move away from
traditional North American Sports. I want to engage students in sports that are culturally
relevant, For instance: Cricket. I want to learn more about cultural sports in order to
promote inclusion in my physical education classroom. Also, I want to show students that
there are different types of sports that are being played around the world, and in different
cultures. This can make students feel a sense of belonging in the classroom. Also,
students can teach other students about the sport that they play a home. This would be a
good way to introduce different sports into the classroom.

The second thing that I would like to know more about is how to successfully
accommodate and modify for students with exceptionalities who are in wheelchairs. For
instance, I learned that it is important for students to have sixty minutes of vigorous daily
physical activity at least three times a week. As a future educator, I want to create
accommodations and modifications for students with exceptionalities who might be in
my classroom in order to make sure that they are getting enough physical activity as well.

Students may be able to move their hands if they are sitting in a wheel chair. I want to
plan this out appropriately in order to include these students in my classroom.

1.

Idea/strategy that I will implement in my own practice

In my future teaching practice I will create a schedule that outlines Daily

Physical Activity and Physical Education Classes on a monthly basis in order to make
sure that I am giving students enough physical activities. As a future educator, I believe
that students need heart-pumping activities because it allows them to sleep better as well.
Throughout three of my practicum experiences I did not see any daily physical activity
being implemented in the classroom. However, I did have an opportunity to teach
physical education two times a week. I believe that it is critical for teachers to include
daily physical activities for a few minutes between other curriculum subjects. This allows
students to become familiarized with the routine if it is apart of a schedule. Through in
class discussion, I realized that it is important to teach students about the benefits of
physical activity and how it could affect them if they don't participate. For instance,
telling students that they will be able to sleep and learn better in school through physical
activity. Also, students can track their progression of physical education by connecting it
to other subject areas such as mathematics. For instance, students can create a bar graph
that outlines how much daily physical activity they participated in each week. As a future
educator, I want to incorporate physical activity into other subject areas. I will make
physical education student-centred, fun, and engaging. This will encourage students to
participate because my outline will follow the students interests. I want to strive to follow
the curriculum document in order to make sure that I am integrating the skills and
meeting the expectations. Moreover, making sure that physical literacy is apart of my
lesson plans. I want to help students strive and develop capacity through health and
physical education.

In the article called Looking Forward, Looking Back: Shaping Professional

Visions of HPE Through Critical Reflection I learned that it is important for new
teachers to think deeply about teaching Health and Physical Education. The reason that
this is important is because it allows individuals to make connections that align with both
their life and the curriculum. Some individuals may find it difficult to make connections
between their life and the curriculum. However, it is easier to demonstrate the importance
of health and physical education to students if teachers can relate it to their personal life
experiences (Fletcher, & Temertzoglou, 2010). As a future educator, I want to partake in
critical reflection in order to relate physical education to my life experiences. This will
allow me to fully understand physical education and teach it effectively to my students.
