welcome letter
welcome. Each one of you could tell your own unique tale of how
you came to Edge Project 2016. The plot of your story is divine,
the details are intricate, and though your story may sound vastly
different from those of others, we all have the joy of sharing one
chapter together in the town of Altea-Alicante, Spain.
We are thrilled you are a part of this summers team. We look
forward to all that will unfold in the season ahead together. May you
be blessed as you prepare yourself for our time together in Spain,
and may you engage and commit fully to each and every moment
the Father has designed for you to experience this summer. He will
do a great work in your life, our team, and His harvest fields that will
prove fruitful for years to come.
We trust the Lord has laid a solid foundation in your life for all
He wants to do in and through you in the coming months. And,
at the same time, we anticipate He will build up and solidify the
foundations of your identity, your heart, your faith, your creativity,
and your ability to impact others around you as you press in to all the
great things He is inviting you to experience with Edge Project.
May the Father give you eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to
understand. May you have grace as you engage the community of
Altea. May you have joy as you experience the Fathers love for you.
May you be filled to the fullest measure of good as you explore your
heart, others, and this world in which we live. May you know the
beauty of the Kingdom as you share in life and work and walk in
your identity as sons and daughters of a very good King. May you
embrace the culture and create expressions of art that define the
presence of God within you. Be blessed. Live in your blessing to be a
blessing, everywhere you step.
We look forward to watching how He writes the next chapter of
your story.

Justin Gerry
From: Maui, HI
Executive Director & Spiritual Care, Edge Project 2016
Justins life has been marked with crossing cultural boundaries,
including over 14 years of cross-cultural ministry experience.
He grew up on the island of Maui in Hawaii, a true melting pot
of cultures. It was there he gave his life to Christ at 12 years old
and also gained extensive experience in the performing arts.
After graduating from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a
bachelors in broadcast journalism, he moved to Europe to serve
in full-time ministry. He immersed himself in the language and
culture and planted a Calvary Chapel church in Slovenia. While
pastoring there he met his wife, Erin, while she was attending
Bible college in Hungary. Justin and Erin navigated through
married life on the mission field and successfully handed over
the Slovenian church to national leaders in 2012.
At that time they re-entered American culture and began their
newest cross-cultural ministry...as public high school teachers
in rural Oklahoma, Erins home state. They currently minister
to their students and in a home fellowship. In their free time
they enjoy staying fit, refinishing old furniture, and performing
in community theater. This summer marks Justins fifth time
serving at Edge Project in Altea and he currently serves on the
Board of Directors of Edge Project.

Lucas Chadwick
From: Snohomish, Washington
Spiritual Care Intern
Lucas is a recent college graduate. In 2011 Lucas began his time
at Biola University in La Mirada, California, where he studied
for 4 years. While at Biola, Lucas was involved in several extracurricular activities and student ministries, including a year
of varsity soccer. He also quickly discovered his deep love for
Scripture, which led to the development of his scribe project,
his personal endeavor to copy the entire Bible by hand into a
large journal.
Prior to his graduation in 2015, Lucas became involved in SMU
-- Biolas student missionary program. Last summer he co-led a
team of fellow students to partner with Edge Project 2015. After
his month in Spain, Lucas was convinced of his calling for the
mission field and has been preparing to return ever since.
Lucas currently lives in Washington State with his family where
he temporarily works at a homeless shelter for at-risk youth. He
will be returning to Altea this summer with Edge as an intern in
pastoral care.

Director of Dance
Marlita Hill is the Artistic Director/Choreographer for
Speak Hill Dance Project, started in May 2014. Marlita is
very passionate about the intersection of dance and faith. Her
introduction to dance was through an LA-based Christian
dance company. Her involvement in the dance ministry
community spans 20 years as a dancer, teacher, choreographer,
author, and mentor.
She holds a BFA in Dance Performance with K-12 Certification
from Towson University, Towson, MD, and has authored
two books on dance and ministryin her Dancers! Assume
the Position series. The first book focuses on dance in
congregational worship, and the second focuses on Christian
dancers with careers in commercial/entertainment, concert,
academic, and community contexts.
Her latest project is the Kingdom Artists Initiative, a network
of artists supporting each other in creating art and managing
careers according to Kingdom principles. In 2009, Hill cofounded the dance department at the Ramon C. Cortines
School for the Visual and Performing Arts, in downtown Los
Angeles, where she teaches tap, modern, and choreography.

Arianna Yates
From: San Pedro, California
Director of Hospitality and Events Coordinator
Arianna (numero dos!) has a heart for diverse populations and is
inclusive by nature. As a biracial, SoCal native nothing makes her
happier then flip flops, the ocean breeze, and soaking up the sunshine!
As an aspiring professional in the world of psychology and education
she is currently pursuing her masters in clinical psychology at
Pepperdine University. She hopes to use her degree to work in any
number of areas from assisting young people in the high school/
college transition process to cultural diversity building to aiding
women who have been victims of human trafficking to assisting
with inner-city ministry education.
She loves to paint pictures, but not in the conventional way with
acrylics and brushes. Her current job as a coordinator in the Events
and Outreach Department allows her to paint the big picture and
then find the details needed to create a purpose-driven event.
Arianna loves anything art related - from singing, dancing, and
simply entertaining with family and friends to her love for telling
untold stories and recreating them through photos, writing, and video.
Arianna is actively involved in her church and loves serving on the
connections and hosting team as well as assisting in pioneering the
college/young adult ministry with a team of passionate people at her
church in LA. You can typically find her meeting new people and
finding creative ways to feed them!
She is overjoyed to step into territory in Alicante that has been
tended to with such love and care after years of intentional
relationships and is thrilled to rest and dwell with the Lord while
loving on people. But mostly, she is excited to serve and see people
step out in faith while discovering and unfolding what the Lord
has called them to do, For in him we live, and move, and have our
being - Acts 17:28

The place, the people and the present times in Spain provide
an incredible opportunity to develop a cross-cultural lifestyle
while following Jesus Christ.

uniquely situated as a global crossroads, this land is a

bridge of two continents (Africa & Europe), dividing the
Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Spanish
language is the worlds 3rd most widely spoken language with
over 340 million people.
Although the nation is traditionally Catholic, Spain has not
experienced a spiritual revival on a national level. During
the Golden Era, Spain was sending missionaries, along with
the conquistadors to the Americas, and their artists were an
inspiration to all of Europe. The nation today is in a spiritual
decline, greatly needing a fresh move of God upon the lives of
the people.
The Jewish Heritage of Spain dates back as far as the Old
Testament (see Obadiah 20). In 1991, The King of Spain, Juan
Carlos 1, said this about the Jews of Spain, The Sepharadim
are a much beloved part of the Great Hispanic Family, who
have created an itinerant Spain all over the world & after five
centuries of estrangement, their ancient homeland has opened
its doors wide.
In the Provincia de Alicante, its coastal region has a diverse
population of European, Latin American & North Africans
living and working in an area with a rich contemporary
Spanish culture.

preparing for spain

we look forward to living and learning together during our
life-transforming weeks in Spain. But in order to get the most
out of our time together this summer, we want to help you
prepare BEFORE you step onto the plane.
In the coming weeks prior to your departure for Edge Project
2016, we ask that you set aside a bit of time each week to
participate in the following activities and reflection exercises.
Each one aligns with some aspect of our Edge-style of ministry
in Spain, and by committing to complete them PRIOR to
departing the U.S., you will find yourself better prepared to
engage and be effective once you join us in Spain.

16

pre-edge exercise #1
(April 24 April 30)

at our training day together, we took some time to seek

the Lord for a word or phrase to focus on this summer. This
week, explore this word or phrase a bit further. Ask the Lord
for further clarification or understanding of the word or phrase,
so you have a clearer vision of what He has in store for you this
summer. Try to find at least three Scriptures that correspond to
the word or phrase (you may want to use a concordance to help
you in doing this) and write them in the space below.
Meditate on these verses in the coming weeks and mark at least one
you would like to commit to memorize prior to coming to Spain.

17

pre-edge exercise #2
(May 1 May 7)

art is a foundational element of Edge Project. In

addition to growing as an artist and learning to express
yourself and your faith through your creativity, you will have
the opportunity this summer to participate in hosting our
weekly art show at the El Diseo art gallery. We ask that each
Edge Project participant create an art piece prior to coming to
Spain to show at our first art night. Here are some guidelines
for your art piece:
Your art piece should reflect or represent our summer theme
of FOUNDATIONS. You can interpret this in many different
ways to help you find your inspiration foundational truths of
what you believe, foundational moments in your life and story,
foundational principles that you live by, foundations in a more
literal sense feel free to explore, interpret, and represent our
theme of FOUNDATIONS.
You should create your art piece prior to coming to Spain with
minimal assembly, if any, required. Your art needs to small
enough to pack in your luggage to bring with you.
Take some time this week to dream, envision, sketch, or plan
what you may do for your art piece. Use the space below
to brainstorm the theme of foundations and jot down any
snippets of inspiration or ideas you have that you can use to
help you create this art piece in the coming weeks.

18

pre-edge exercise #3
(May 8 May 14)

it is our desire that your experience this summer at Edge

Project and your time in Spain will mark a time of change,
growth, and renewed passion in your life. Year in and year
out it seems to be a great place where God meets each of the
participants in life-changing ways. God often meets us in our
lives at key times and places to reveal more of Himself to us and
to transform us.
This week, visit a physical location that may have been
significant in your walk with the Lord a place where you
surrendered, a place where you took a step of obedience, a
place where you entered into some change, a place where you
experienced freedom, a place where God used you, etc. Spend
some time at that location in personal reflection, allowing time
for the Spirit to speak to you. What has God revealed about
Himself to you since that point? How has He changed you and
worked in you or used you since then? Is there anything that
began there that He still needs to complete?
Write down some of your reflections below.

19

pre-edge exercise #4
(May 15 May 21)

prayer is a foundational part of a dynamic life with

Jesus and will be an important part of your preparation and
experience with Edge Project. Set aside some time this week
to pray, seek God, and listen to Him through prayer and/
or fasting. Maybe its a whole day, a part of a day, or just
purposeful moments but go beyond the scope of your regular
time with God to really seek Him in prayer. You may want to:
take a personal prayer retreat set aside a day or series of days to
abstain from an activity in order to dedicate that time to Him
take a prayer walk around your neighborhood, campus,
favorite part of town, or a place you are burdened for. Walk
and let God show you what to pray for, when to stop, etc. Go
to a beautiful or inspiring place you love with the purpose of
spending some uninterrupted time talking with your Creator.
Use the space below to jot down anything specific the Lord led
you to pray for or revealed to you as your sought His face.

20

pre-edge exercise #5
(May 22 May 28)

building and cultivating relationships are a

foundational approach to our ministry at Edge Project and
in sharing our faith naturally with other people. This week,
seek to make a new friend or grow a relationship that has some
potential. Pray and ask God to show you who to invest in or
what you might be able to do to connect with this person more
deeply. You dont need to strive, but seek to be led by Him. He
may show you to: go out of your way to purposefully introduce
yourself to and talk to a neighbor/co-worker/classmate you have
never really met, do something nice for or write a card or email
to a co-worker or colleague you dont know well but would like
to show appreciation for, sit at a cafe or other local spot you visit
and look for a chance to meet another regular or strike up a
conversation with someone, ask to spend time with someone
you have known until now only as an acquaintance
offer to do something practical for someone you do not know
very well to meet a need of theirs.
Use the space below to record some of your thoughts and
impressions about your experience from start to finish.

21

pre-edge exercise #6
(May 29 June 4)

in just a few weeks you will be in Spain! As part of your

Edge Project experience, you will likely spend a lot more time
than you are used to unplugged without internet, cell phone
service, moment-by-moment social media interaction, and
the security of being connected at all times. This week we
encourage you to try it out UNPLUG! Maybe you unplug for
an entire day, a series of days, or maybe just during a handful
of windows if your life and schedule dont allow for a total
blackout. You may choose to:

-Leave the house without your phone (yikes!)

-Shut off message/text reminders and only allow
yourself to check your messages at certain times.
-Go off social media for longer than usual.
-Logout of Netflix for the entire week.

You may even want to use unplugging as a way to help

you focus and get some of the things done that you need to
accomplish before leaving for Spain packing, your art project
you should bring with you (see Pre-Edge Exercise #2), thank
you notes or prayer letters for supporters, etc. Use the space
below to record some of your experiences of unplugging and
your thoughts about not being connected all the time
while overseas.

22

pre-edge exercise #7
(June 5 June 11)

jesus taught a parable about foundations: Therefore whoever

hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him
to a wise man who build his house on the rock: and the rain
descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat
on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the
rock. Matthew 7:24,25. In this parable, Jesus talks about the
importance of hearing His commands AND taking steps of
obedience. With your journey to Spain and Edge Project about
to begin, set aside some time for an honest conversation with
Jesus. Ask Him to show you areas in which He is asking you to
be obedient. They may be areas of obedience for Edge Project
specifically or areas of obedience for your life with Him in
general. Have a candid conversation with God about those areas
and seek to commit to do what He asks in obedience. Use the
space below to write down specific areas or steps of obedience
He may be asking you to take at Edge Project or beyond.

23

pre-edge exercise #8
(June 12 June 18)

after laying a foundation in the lives of the apostles,

Jesus gathered those who were closest to him and sent them out
with these parting words: ...and you shall be My witnesses...
to the end of the earth. Acts 1:8 This week before leaving for
Spain, find an opportunity to gather with others who might be
a part of sending you out. Perhaps you might:

-Ask some friends, family, and supporters to meet you

for an evening of prayer together before you leave
-Meet with a mentor or pastor for a one-on-one time of
encouragement before leaving
-Send out an email or blog to a group of committed
individuals who can be praying for you from afar once
you leave
-Throw a fiesta at which you take some time to share
all the things the Lord has been showing you prior to
your trip and to ask those attending to commit to pray
for you one day of your trip

You may want to also plan in advance and invite them to a

return event at which you can share with them what the
Lord did at Edge Project, so they can be a part of sending an
receiving you. Use the space below to write any ideas or plans
you may have to be sent out by those who care for you.

foundations
the theme for edge project 2016 is Foundations. We look
forward to experiencing how Jesus will transform each one of us
as we allow Him to lay new foundations as only He can, to restore
and strengthen our foundations where needed, and to build His
Kingdom on the firmest of foundations using our unique gifts and
abilities to impact the world around us.
It is our desire to learn to live and share a message as Jesus intended
it to be. As part of our experience, we will use the Book of Acts in
the New Testament to get a candid look at the foundations of the
early church. As we meditate on these records in Scripture, we will
seek to reflect and mirror all that they experienced and let it guide
us in reaching out to lives cross-culturally.
Since our Edge Project experience together will last 28 days, we
will individually and corporately reflect on one chapter a day from
the Book of Acts. You will find a place to record your reflections
daily as you allow the Holy Spirit to bring the words to live and
shed light on how you can apply these things in Altea and in your
life beyond. Each day, you will reflect on three things:
-What is something that you observed, saw, or that

stood out to you from todays chapter?

-What is something you sense God wants you to do in

response to what you read today?

-What is one question or prayer you have as a result

from todays chapter?
Record your responses on the following pages. You will also find
a place to take notes during our corporate times of reflection and
conversation on some of the foundational lessons and principles
for life and ministry as seen in the Book of Acts.

And there was great joy in that city.

words of encouragement
an excerpt from The Artisan Soul

He who is the Creator God is the creative

God, and he created us in his image and
likeness. He created us with imagination
and curiosity, with the capacity to hope
and dream, and he placed within us all the
material necessary to live an extraordinarily
creative life. The proof is that more than
anything else we are a soul, and that soul
is the divine material with which we are
made to create. The difference between
humans and every other species on this
planet is that humans are artists. This is our
uniquenesswe were created to create.
Somewhere along the way we forgot this. We
became convinced we were something less.
It is time to become more. I have seen the
future, and it is filled with beauty and wonder.
Thats what happens when humans embrace
their artisan souls and begin to create. To
create is to be fully human. We stand at the
precipice of a revolution of creativity, the
beginning of a new renaissance. We live in a
world of artists.
