Chapter I

THE PROBLEM
Introduction
Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to
community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration1. These are computermediated tools that allow people to create, share or exchange information, ideas, and
pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks2. Social media differs from traditional
or industrial media in many ways, including quality, reach, frequency, usability, immediacy
and permanence. Websites and applications dedicated to forums, microblogging, social
networking , social bookmarking, social curation, and wikis are among the different types of
social media.
Social networking sites are a branch of social media. The most commonly used
social networking sites today are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Facebook is a popular
free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos
and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues 4. Twitter is
an online social networking service that allows users to send and read short 140-character
messages called tweets5. Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and
social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them
on a variety of social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr6.
Social media is indeed becoming widespread nowadays. The number of its users
has grown vastly and will continue to grow as more and more people learn how to use it.

According to a study, six out of ten Filipino young people aged 15 to 24 years old are
regular internet users and more than half have social network and email accounts 3. A lot of
students engage most of their time in social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram. This may appear to be a waste of time; however, it also helps students to be
aware citizens and to develop knowledge and social skills. It is also believed to be a vital
component in a students success.
However, there are many effects that stem from internet usage. Internet users
continue to spend more time with social media sites than any other type of site. As social
networking increase in popularity, students tend to immerse themselves and devote their
time in using these sites. Many parents, as well as teachers, are concerned that their college
students use these sites on a daily basis; thus affecting their study efficiency. Social network
sites has various effects on college students.
In this research, the researchers are going to tackle on the influences and effects
of social networking sites on college students and how it affects their academic lives.

Statement of the problem


This study will determine whether social networking sites are an interference in
students academic lives. Specifically, it will seek answers to the following sub-problems:
1. What are the primary uses of social networking sites to students?
2. What are the positive and negative effects of social networking sites on the academic
performance of students?

Significance of the study


The objective of this study is to know the impact of social networking sites to the BS
in Accountancy I students. Hence, this study would further benefit the following:
This study will help students to know and understand the importance of personal
communication and interaction, to develop in them their social skills, to be informed that
social networking sites are to be utilized moderately and properly, and for them to excel in
their academic lives.
This will also help teachers to assist, warn and remind the students in their
responsibilities in school.
Also, this study will aid parents in monitoring their children in their daily activities
and for them to control and at the same time support their children in his/her success in their
academic life.

Scope and delimitations


This study will only cover the primary uses of social networking sites and to know
the impact and how it affects the academic lives of the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy I
students. This will also determine how often the respondents use social media.
The main concern of conducting this survey research is sampling. Due to limited
time and resources, only a small portion of BSA I students are requested to participate in the
survey. Thus, we will use random sampling.

Definition of terms
Academic life- used to describe things that relate to work done in schools, colleges, and
universities, especially work which involves studying and reasoning rather than practical
or technical things.
Immerse to become completely occupied with something, giving all your time, energy
and concentration on it.
Interference hindrance or obstruction that prevents a natural or desired outcome.
Social media websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or
to participate in social networking.
Social networking is an online platform that allow users to create a public profile and
interact with other users on the website. It is a branch of social media.
Social skills skills used to communicate and interact with each other, both verbally and
non-verbally.
Study efficiency the ability to do well without wasting energy and effort in academics.
Time management the ability to use ones time effectively and productively.

Chapter II
Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter discusses the related literature and studies, which the researchers
reviewed to determine the gaps that made the conduct of this study possible.
Related Literature
Social media has been criticized a lot due to the effect it has on the way students
produce and retain information. Some parents are of the opinion that social media can be
very distracting and harmful for students. On the contrary, social media offers plenty of
opportunities for learning and interaction. It is rather simple to see how students benefit it.
By using technology in classrooms, the young generation is paving a new way of education
and learning. Students are getting to explore and experience the world not only by books and
assignments; but also by adapting a new form of communication. 1It is often assumed that
because the current generation of students is more technologically competent than previous
generations, they would prefer to use technology for both formal and informal learning.
However, social media offers plenty of opportunities for learning and interactivity, and if
you take a moment to think about it, its not too hard to see how students benefit from using
social media.2
Social networking site connections are designed to increase your networks, form
communities and interact easily. Todays students are accessing Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn
and other such social networking sites to connect and share information with those around
them. One of the most fascinating things about social networking sites is the way the users
can interact and engage with each other through a mere web presence without having to
meet someone in person. They are designed for the purpose of communal connections.
Social media users share among themselves day in and day out, giving and receiving

information at rapid speeds. This information is more than funny cat videos; they share
views and opinions; tips, tricks, and even DIY projects; and, among students, helpful
information for classes. Their ability to assess, analyze, retain and share information is
skyrocketing and they often dont even realize theyre developing these skills. Only people
born before the Internet was invented are likely to understand the magnitude of this new
style of communication.3
Due to the growth in social networking websites, educators are looking for their
potential for use in education, having the conscious that social networking sites may have
the ability to endorse both collaboration and active learning. Thus, the affirmative effects of
social networking in education are perceptive. Using social networking sites, teachers can
able to improve the involvement of their students in studies and education, improve
technological ability, provide a great sense of collaboration in the classroom and make good
communication skills. The University of Minnesota had a research on social networking
sites like MySpace and Facebook and found that the social networking sites have a great
impact for educational growth for students in high school. Christine Greenhow, the principal
investigator in the study, has elaborated the impact of social networking sites on education.
She has done her research on students, aged from 16 to 18, studying in an urban school,
located at the Midwest.
The study showed that, 94 percent of the observed students used the Internet, 77 percent had
their account on social networking sites and 82 percent of the students went online at home.
The surveyed students said that they have learned many important skills such as
technological skills, communication skills, creativity and being open for diverse opinions
and views, which are all important for the 21 st century. Moreover, teachers can also be able

to make the school more social networking sites provide more than just social exploitation.
It offers wide opportunities to give support what the educators learn from the websites.
Therefore, social networking websites are considered as an ideal source that helps us to
widen our knowledge. Recent survey says that millions of people accessing social
networking sites for their educational requirements. Thus, the field of education has
undergone a drastic shift and hence gained a new dimension for the past decade.4
The negative effects of these social networking sites overweigh the positive ones.
These sites have caused some potential harm to society. The students become victims of
social networks more often than anyone else. This is because of the reason that when they
are studying or searching their course material online, they get attracted to these sites to kill
the boredom in their study time, diverting their attention from their work. Other negative
side effects of social networking websites include reduced learning and research
capabilities, multitasking, reduction in real human contact, time wastage, low grades, and
loss of motivation in students.
Students have started relying more on the information accessible easily on these
social networking sites and the web. This reduces their learning and research capabilities.
Students who get involved in activities on social media sites while studying result in
reduction in their focus of attention. This causes reduction in their academic performance,
and concentration to study well. The more time they spend on these social media sites, the
less time they will spend socializing in person with others. This reduces their
communication skills. They will not be able to communicate and socialize effectively in
person with others. The effective communication skills are key to success in the real world.
Students, while searching and studying online, get attracted to using social media sites and

sometimes they forget why they are using internet. This wastes their time and sometimes
they are not able to deliver their work in the specified time frame. They also get low grades
in school due to lack of the desired information and writing skills. Their motivational level
reduces due to the use of these social networking sites. They rely on the virtual environment
instead of gaining practical knowledge from the real world.5
The things around us are bound to develop, to improve and to be more innovative.
With the increase of technology used for communicating with the spread of the Internet,
Social Networking has become an activity that is done primarily on the Internet, with sites
like MySpace, Face book, Skype, etc. (Coyle et al., 2008). Many people especially student
spend a lot of time on this site creating profile, updating or doing research concerning their
career or academic work, while some just use it to chat with friends, post latest pictures of
event they attended, e.g., Young et al., 2009, have examined their profiles to determine why
and to what extent they are keen on posting their entire identity, sharing pictures and videos,
and indicating their religious affiliations, marital status, and political orientations on the
internet.

Related Studies
From childhood to adolescence, social networks play a central role in shaping
individuals' attitude toward education (Coleman 1961). 6Students have great interest in
social networking sites and college students are not an exception. Recent trend shows that
social media usage has increased. Although, providing a detailed perspective on social
media use among university students and underscoring that such use can produce both

positive and negative consequences, according to a Nielsen Media Research study, in June
2010, almost 25 percent of students time on the Internet is now spent on social networking
websites (Jacobsen, & Forste, 2011). As of August 2015, one of the well-known social
networking site is Facebook (Statista, 2015). This site has 1.49 billion active users as of
2015, 50% of whom log on every day and it also has 1.25 billion mobile active users
(MAU). According to Eldon, 51.2% of users are male, whereas 48.8% are female. In terms
of age, 20.6% of users are between the ages of 13 and 17; 25.8% are between the ages of 18
and 25; 26.1% are between the ages of 26-34; and 27.5% are over the age of 35 (Eldon,
2011).7 In addition, according to a study by Online PhD, students spend roughly 100 minutes
per day on Facebook. In 2007, the number of students who used Facebook was already
enormous: 92 percent of college students had an account. By 2008, 99 percent of students
had an account on Facebook. That is quite a large amount considering the service was only
opened in 2006 to everyone. An average Facebook user spends at least 700 minutes on
Facebook in a month. 8
On one hand, the positive aspect of online communities is that youths can utilize
them for academic assistance and support (Lusk, 2010). Due to the ability of social
networking sites to enhance connections by making them easily accessible, social
networking sites can yield many benefits for the young, including providing a virtual space
for them to explore their interests or problems with similar individuals, academic support,
while strengthening online communication skills and knowledge. Students who may be
reluctant to speak up in class are participating in book discussion blogs and writing for real
audiences. There are new Web tools emerging all the time that are enhancing learning
(Brydolf, 2007).

On the other hand, Our findings indicate that electronic media use is negatively
associated with grades. We also find that about two-thirds of the students reported using
electronic media while in class, studying, or doing homework (Jacobsen, & Forste, 2011).
This multitasking likely increases distraction, something prior research has shown to be
detrimental to student performance. As social media websites, such as Facebook, YouTube
and Twitter gain popularity, they are also are becoming increasingly dangerous as they
create modes to procrastinate while trying to complete homework.
According to a study, most college students use social media and spend many hours
checking social media sites, there was a negative aspect to college students use of social
media. Most college students would prefer to use social media and therefore spent vast hours
checking social media sites. Facebook is very popular among college students, even though
students would use it when they had classes. Ninety percent of students spent their time on
entertainment; there were not too many college students who preferred using social media to
deal with their homework. Eighty percent of the sample admitted that they posted or
responded while completing homework. It definitely affected their efficiencies and their
grades. There was a negative attitude towards social media when college students used them.
For instance, imagining one student spent over six hours checking social media site and
responded while completing their homework; it would be likely increase distraction of the
students which can be detrimental to student performance. It has revealed that college
students were likely to be affected by social media. Social media is attractive; it not only
provides college students another world to make friends, also provides a good way to release
pressure. To some degree, it absolutely affects the lives of college students including the
grades. This research also indicates that an approach is needed to better balance the

relationship between social media and academic study. College students should think more
about the balancing equation of social media and academics.

Research Design and Methodology

This chapter contains the research design, the sources of data, the population and
sampling method, the research instrument, the data gathering procedure, and the
statistical treatment that is used in the study. It also includes the general procedure in
finding the result.

The Research design


This study used the quantitative descriptive type of research utilizing the survey
questionnaire as the main data gathering tool. Quantitative descriptive type of research
simply aims to describe the variables being measured 7. Descriptive because the research
involves the collection of data in order to answer questions concerning the current status
of the subject study. Thus, such type of research gives well classified information to
arrive at a better presentation of data.
Sources of Data
The primary source of data was from the responses of the randomly selected
students from Bicol University Bachelor of Science in Accountancy first year students.
From the answers that we have collected, the researchers were able to accumulate the
needed data for the study. The researchers also were able to evaluate the data gathered to
further understand the study.

Population and Sampling

The main target for this research are the students of Bicol University. The
respondents of this study were the randomly selected first year college students of BS in
Accountancy of Bicol University. The respondents chosen were the ones having active
social media accounts.

Research Instrument
The research instrument that was used in the study was the semi-structured survey
questionnaire. Semi structured questionnaire contains both close ended and open ended
questions8. The questionnaire consists of two parts. First is the socio-demographic profile of
the respondents that are selected students of BS in Accountancy first year students. The
respondents filled out the information such as name, age, gender, course, year level and
block. The second part focused primarily on the information regarding the primary uses, the
impact and effects (both positive and negative) of social networking sites on students
academic performance. This survey will function as the key for the researchers to determine
and find answers to the problem.

Data Gathering Procedure


Resource materials were gathered and collected from the College of Arts and Letters
Library and from the Internet.
After designing and planning out the questionnaires, the researchers made use of the
simple random sampling. Simple random sampling is the easiest form of probability
sampling. All the researcher needs to do is assure that all the members of the population are
included in the list and then randomly select the desired number of subjects9.

After gathering the needed and important information from the survey questionnaire,
the researchers then tallied, analyzed, assessed and interpreted the data. From the results, the
findings, conclusions and recommendations were formed.

Data Processing Procedure and Statistical Treatment of Data


For valid interpretation of data, the descriptive statistics were applied. Percentage
was used for descriptive purposes. Frequency count was done to indicate the numerical
count. Also, in determining the sample size or the respondents for our study, the researchers
made use of the Slovins formula10. After the calculation, the researchers arrived at having
110 respondents for the study. The formula for this is:

e = margin of error
Part two of the questionnaire made use of the frequency count and percentage
technique. Frequency was used to show the number of responses obtained for each
corresponding question and to determine the relation of the part to the whole. Percentage
was computed by dividing a part to a whole, then the quotient is multiplied by 100.

Chapter IV
Presentation and Analysis of Data
This chapter intends to show the summary of the collected data from the survey
done to know the impact and effects of social networking sites to BSA first year
students.
The researchers would like to present all the gathered facts and figures,
deliberation throughout the making of this research.
The data is presented clearly through the use of tables and graph with extensive
analysis.
Socio Demographic Profile of the Respondents
The socio-demographic profile of the students include their age and gender. These
were deemed necessary in determining whether there is a significant relation between the
socio-demographic profile and the respondents internet usage.

Age. Figure 1 shows that of the 110 respondents, a significant number of them were sixteenyear old teens (58.18%). Following closely (35.45%) were the respondents who were
seventeen-year old teens. The third in the group (2.73%) were those who were fifteen-year
old teens. And lastly, (1.82%) were the respondents who were eighteen-year old teens and
those who did not indicate their age.

Gender. The results show that 85 of the 110 respondents were female and 23 were male.
There were two respondents who did not indicate their gender. It appeared that most of the
respondents who used social networking sites were female. To summarize, 58.18% of the
respondents were 16 years old and 77.27% (85) were female. According to a survey, more
women are really more active in social networking sites.1

Mostly owned Social Networking Site. Figure 3 showed the result of the social networking
site that was mostly owned by the respondents. Facebook was the most owned social
networking site based on the survey conducted by the researchers which had 105 users
(43.57%). It was followed by Twitter with 66 users (27.39%) and Instagram with 58 users
(24.07%). Other social networking sites that were used were Tumblr with 5 users (4.55%),
Youtube, Wattpad, and Ask.fm having 2 users each (0.83%) while snapchat (0.41%) was not
frequently owned by the students.

Time spent on social networking sites. Figure 4 showed the result of the time spent by the
respondents on using Social Networking Sites. Highest among the choices was 2 hours to 3
hours with 33 responses from 110 respondents. This was followed by the use of social
networking sites for 3 hours or longer having 27 responses from 110 respondents. 1 minute
to 1 hour having 26 out of 110 respondents being next. And lastly, only a few spent their
time using social networking sites for 1 hour to 2 hours having 24 responses from 110
respondents.

study time. To summarize, more students say that social networking sites are hindering the
students from allotting time for studying.

the result whether social networking sites could be a tool to help students for their
assignments and other school related things. 101 out of 110 respondents agreed that it

Primary Uses of Social Networking Sites. Table 1 showed the primary uses of social
networking sites by the randomly selected BSA I students. According to the table, the major
use of social networking sites are both for entertainment (27.5%) and for communication
and socializing (27.5%). Following the two was that it was used for knowing updates
(26.67%). At number three was for source of information (10.83%). 3.33% answered that it
was for relieving stress and also 3.33% omitted the question. And only 0.83% answered that
it was a medium of expression.

useful for school related things which had 76 out of 110 respondents (57.58%). It was
followed with the reason to be updated about different events in social networking sites

lastly, for online lectures having 3 out of 110 respondents (2.27%). 3 out of 110 respondents
did not answer.

Negative Effects of Social Networking Sites on Students Academic Life . According


to Table 3, the number one negative effect on the academic life of students was it affects the
study habits of the students (27.98%) having 47 out of 110 respondents. Following that, the
next effect was it was a distraction (20.83%) having 35 out of 110 respondents. Students also
said that it was time consuming (19.05%) with 32 out of 110 respondents. Addiction
(9.52%) is also one of the effects of social networking sites. Being unproductive (5.36%)
was also a negative effect. Procrastination and lack of sleep (4.17%). 3 out of 110
respondents said that it did not affect his/her academic life and also it had them experience
low grades (1.78%). (0.60%) 1 out of 110 respondents said that they acquire wrong
information and they forget the essence of books.

Chapter V
Conclusions and Recommendations
This chapter includes the findings that has been collected and discovered throughout
the making of the thesis. This chapter summarizes the data and information gathered from
Chapters I to IV so as to oversee the primary uses and effects of social networking sites to
the academic life of the BSA first year students.

Summary

This study was undertaken to determine the primary uses and the effects of social
networking sites on the academic life of BSA I students. Specifically, it aims to answer if
what are the uses, and the positive and negative effects of these sites to the performance of
the students.
One hundred ten (110) students of BS in Accountancy first year students were
randomly selected as respondents in this study. Thirty eight (38) from Block A, B and C
answered the survey questionnaire designed by the researchers. This study utilized the
quantitative descriptive type of research to gather the needed information about the present
existing conditions.

This type of research gives well defined and well classified

information; thus, giving a better presentation of data. The researchers also made us of the
semi structured questionnaire which contains both open ended and close ended
questions. Data collection was done per class to those who qualified as respondents.
Percentage and frequency count were used to descriptively analyze the data collected.

Conclusion
Social networking sites have different effects on our lives especially in the academic
lives of students. Due to the technologies that we have today, students encounter positive
and negative effects regarding the usage of these sites. Based on the survey conducted by the
researchers, there are a lot of sixteen-year old teenagers who use social networking sites and
majority of them are females. The researchers also discovered that most of the students have
Facebook and that they check their social networking sites daily for two to three hours.
Thus, it affects their study time but acts as a significant role in the completion of their

homework in school. The respondents also agreed that social networking sites can affect
their communication skills and writing skills in their everyday life. The primary uses of
these social networking sites are for entertainment and also a way to communicate or
socialize with other people. It is also relevant for being updated about current events in
school and in the country. The positive effect of social networking sites is that it is useful for
educational purposes and they are important for giving updates about different events in
school. The negative effect is that it affects the students study habits because social
networking sites tend to be a distraction to students while they are studying for their
examinations. From the results that we derived at, a large response from the students show
that it can affect their study habits (80 out of 110 respondents) and at the same time, it can
greatly help with their assignments and for other school related purposes (101 out of 110
respondents). From the findings and results, the researchers therefore conclude that from
using social networking sites, students can either benefit or detriment from it. Hence, it can
positively and negatively affect a students academic life.

Recommendations
Based on the findings and conclusions, the following are hereby recommended.
1. Students must control and limit their time allotted for the usage of social
networking sites, so as to avoid distraction from studying for an examination.
They should always prioritize academics above all. They must also be aware of
the proper usage of these sites to avoid it from affecting ones academic

performance.
2. Teachers must consider using social networking sites for their discussions. Since
most of the students use these on a daily basis, they would be more motivated to
study

if

they

are

introduced

to

different

learning

style.

3. Parents must frequently monitor and guide their child to avoid addiction to social
networking sites.
4. Future researchers can use this study as reference and as a basis for future
innovation. They could use a larger population so as to have more accurate
results.
