Gardens :
Due to imminent retirement, this is a great opportunity for someone to take over this small family-run Landscape
Gardening Business based in the Scottish Highlands. Over the last thirteen years we have developed a solid turnover via
our well-established client base with excellent customer relations. There is plenty of scope for expanding the business
should you wish to do so. The business will be sold with a Peugeot Partner van, plus a full, extensive set of wellmaintained equipment, enabling the successful buyer to start work immediately. Accounts available for inspection.

Bringing Venice to Inverness
There have been some interesting exhibitions recently at INVERNESS MUSEUM AND
GALLERY (IMAG) and theres another good-looking one running from 12 NOV31 DEC
courtesy of GRAHAM FAGEN who has reinterpreted the body of work he made for his
Scotland+Venice exhibition in 2015. The original exhibition of sculpture, drawing and
moving image was made for the four noble rooms of Palazzo Fontana, on the Grand
Canal. Graham is an artist who forms close collaborations in the making of his work and
for his four screen moving image work, The Slaves Lament [1], a pivotal work within
the exhibition, he brings together reggae singer and musician Ghetto Priest, the mighty
music producer Adrian Sherwood, classical composer Sally Beamish and musicians from
Scottish Ensemble. Inspired by the Burns poem of the same name written in 1792, the
lamenting musical interpretation draws viewers through the exhibition in its new location.
Last month you were given the opportunity to peek into the houses of Cromarty and this
month its the turn of the studios. The CROMARTY OPEN STUDIO initiative on 26 & 27
NOV is an exciting opportunity to see approximately 1015 studios/workshops belonging
to local artists, which are not normally open to the public. Youll be able to see artists
working and also buy work from them. There will be a range of skills/media on display
from watercolour/oil painting, ceramics, jewellery, wood turning, pottery and many more.
From 0525 NOV you can see the work of the REDCASTLE ART GROUP at UHI. The group
comprises 14 experienced Highland artists who meet every month on the Black Isle to
paint together and exchange ideas, with guidance from well-known landscape painter
Jonathan Shearer. The group work en plein air as much as possible and encompass a
wide variety of styles and media. This year their annual exhibition takes place at the new
University campus in Inverness, a chance to visit this stunning building in a lovely setting.

A Period of Celebration!
Okay, were going to have to speak fast as theres not much room but LOADS to fit in!
So, in cinema terms, its Christmas it comes but once a year, its a flurry of
fabulous fun and its all over just a few short days and you wish life could always
be like that. Weve not heard people sing Oh, I wish it could be the INVERNESS
FILM FESTIVAL every da-a-ay, but were fairly certain that they do especially after
last years best ever fest. This years runs from WED 09SUN 13 NOV and will
feature over 75 films, shorts, docs and animations from 31 countries, including 28
premieres (some UK firsts) and at least 6 special events including one screening
that will take 6.5 hours to complete!
The festivals big hitter titles that might subsequently be at Vue (getting their UK release
later in the month) include two Festival Preview screenings on THU 03 NOV, THE LIGHT
BETWEEN OCEANS, a drama with ALICIA VIKANDER, MICHAEL FASSBENDER and
RACHEL WEISZ; and THE ACCOUNTANT featuring BEN AFFLECK and ANNA KENDRICK
with the inimitable JK SIMMONS; as well as two AMY ADAMS films ARRIVAL [1] (tense
Denis Villeneuve Sci-fi) and NOCTURNAL ANIMALS [2] (drama with JAKE GYLLENHAAL)
and 40s-set race relations movie A UNITED KINGDOM [3] with DAVID OYELOWO
and ROSAMUND PIKE. Also on general release later in November but perhaps less
likely to hit Inverness are Jim Jarmuschs PATERSON [4] which features a star-making
turn from the excellent ADAM (Kylo Ren/Llewyn Davis) DRIVER, and MILES TELLER with
AARON ECKHART in boxing flick BLEED FOR THIS.
But the bulk of the films (and some would say this is where the real magic is)
screening at the festival, wont be appearing at Vue, or anywhere else, very soon if
at all. Take Park Chan Wooks THE HANDMAIDEN [5]. This South Korean director
makes psychological thrillers that are beautiful and striking and erotic with well
judged splashes of meaningful violence. CASEY AFFLECK (yes, Bens brother) has
been brilliant for quite some time and perhaps with MANCHESTER BY THE SEA [6]
hell get some sort of recognition for his quietly affecting work. Spike Lees satirical
musical drama about Chicago gangs, CHI-RAQ [7], had a very limited cinema release
in 2015 and is some of his sharpest work in years. In Canadian-French ITS ONLY THE
END OF THE WORLD, VINCENT CASSEL, MARION COTILLARD, LA SEYDOUX and
GASPARD ULLIEL play out an emotional family drama, whilst Terence Davies A QUIET
PASSION [8] sees SITCs CYNTHIA NIXON as U.S. poet Emily Dickinson. Fans of Iggy
& THE STOOGES will not want to miss Jim Jarmuschs tribute, GIMME DANGER [9],
and cat fans (yes, you) will love KEDI a documentary about the felines of Instanbul.
The Roof Of The World section features films from Tibet, Nepal, Afghanistan and
Mongolia largely centred on landscape and children (eg THE EAGLE HUNTRESS
[10]), and beautifully so. New Australian Cinema features two Scottish premieres,
LAST CAB TO DARWIN (with MICHAEL CATON) and GIRL ASLEEP [11] starring
Bethany Whitmore (Mary in Mary And Max), and theres also New Brazilian Cinema
(inc KILL ME NOW) and New World Cinema sections (watch out for the controversial
RAW [12], Hirokazu Kore-edas AFTER THE STORM [13], and Saudi Arabias first
rom-com, BARAKAH MEETS BARAKAH [14]) full of wonder and promise. Plus a mini
French Film Festival, and so. Much. More!
Outside of the festival, you might also consider: ALLIED (11 Nov, Vue), 1942 Casablanca
with BRAD PITT, MARION COTILLARD; AMERICAN PASTORAL (11 Nov, Vue) EWAN
MCGREGORs directorial debut; FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM [15]
(18 Nov, EC & Vue) EDDIE REDMAYNE dresses like Dr Who, acts like Harry Potter. >>>

>>>Dr Potter? Harry Who? Vexing, it is; also, ALMOST CHRISTMAS and BAD SANTA
2 (both 25 Nov, Vue) launch festivities. Then at EC theres BRIDGET JONESS BABY
(lazy or welcome return), THE FENCER (50s Estonia, Russian occupation), THEO
AND HUGO (Parisian HIV story) , THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS (years best zombie
flick?), ALAN BENNETTS DIARIES LIVE [17] (screening followed by a live Q&A from
his local library!) and the TAKE ONE ACTION FESTIVAL. Not overlooking AMERICAN
HONEY, A GOOD AMERICAN, and SWISS ARMY MAN [16] (see listings for those
three). Its all too much!

Shakespeare & Shapes
Its that time of the year when events for all the family come thick and fast. October
ends with the Halloween shindig on Ness Islands, shortly followed by the famous
BONFIRE & FIREWORKS on 05 NOV and the CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON on
20 NOV. You can read more about the latter two events on our Specials page P29.
Indoors therell be plenty of interest in the SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL at
EDEN COURT on 08 NOV. A series of unique performances by children from the local
community, this is a wonderful opportunity for schools to introduce children to the
language, magic and possibilities of Shakespeare. That this is the 400th anniversary
of the Bards death makes the event particularly notable and further demonstrates the
enduring quality of his creations as they pass from one generation to the next.
More youthful participation at the BIG DANCE SHOW on 14 NOV at EDEN COURT. Over
20 local groups of all ages from across the Highlands have been selected to come and
perform on the main stage in the Empire Theatre. From Wick to Mallaig each group will
be showing us the best of whats on offer, from Highland to Hip-Hop, Ballet to Bollywood.
Something a little less raucous is THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME at UNIVERSAL HALL,
FINDHORN on 26 NOV. Starcatchers & Branar Tatar do Phist present this magical show
for the very young created by Ailie Cohen & Marc Mac Lochlainn. The world all around us
is made up of wonderful shapes, they tell us. But sometimes there are so many shapes
that some get lost. This is a story of two shapes, Cubert and Triantn, and the adventures
they have finding their way back to each other. Set in a soft and tactile environment, this
interactive story is told through puppetry, object theatre, music and sound. Designed for
babies and toddlers aged from 6 months to 2 years (and their adults).

MUSIC
It goes without saying that theres plenty of music on offer this month. Thats how
Inverness rolls these days. Whats particularly striking however is the number of acts
from the eighties and nineties who are coming to town, half of them Scottish. First
up is MIDGE URE [1] at EDEN COURT on 07 NOV. His careers spanned almost four
decades including 70s popsters Slik, the punky Rich Kids and even a brief stint with Thin
Lizzy as well of course as his main global success fronting Ultravox with their 1981 smash
hit Vienna and the small matter of co-creating Band Aid. Plenty of back catalogue to
draw on then and his set may well touch on all bases.
Another couple of Scots acts attracting accolades for their creative resurgence are
playing IRONWORKS this month and both, coincidentally used to be on Creation
Records. TEENAGE FANCLUB [2] (15 NOV) have long had a way with life affirming
melodic pop and their new album Here is as good as anything theyve ever done.
PRIMAL SCREAM [3] (23 NOV) meanwhile, continue to produce swaggering,
anthemic tunes and throbbing grooves, a combination that even Bobby Gillespies
new-found sobriety hasnt dulled. Both gigs demand your presence, as does another
at IRONWORKS, by scousers CAST on 26 NOV.
Martin Stephenson is a familiar face to many of us, being resident to these climes
and playing small solo gigs regularly but hes back with his original outfit MARTIN
STEPHENSON & THE DAINTEES [4], celebrating the 30th anniverary of their best
selling 86 album Boat To Bolivia, and they appear at EDEN COURT (14 NOV) as part
of that anniversary tour.
A heads up too for GRANDMASTER FLASH [5], playing IRONWORKS on 03 DEC. The
Godfather of Hip Hop has always been respected, but his star is shining brighter than
ever thanks to Baz Luhrmanns recent The Get Down Netflix series, dramatising the
musical revolution that Flash was responsible for creating. Get along and wave your
arms in the air like you just dont care
What else? Plenty of drama to choose from a band name with four words to
choke upon is the unashamedly dramatic BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE [6], who
perform their 2005 debut album The Poison in its entirety at IRONWORKS on 01
DEC. Or maybe the astonishing talent of the oddly named Belgian piano twosome
DUO B!ZART at EDEN COURT on 07 NOV. Or the welcome return to EDEN COURT of
BBC SSO on 11 NOV with a programme of Tippett, Bruch and Dvorak.
A word too for a wealth of local talent. Thirty years ago the THE FAULTLINE FESTIVAL
was born and to celebrate the anniversary theres a raft of music, theatre, poetry,
sketches and more (various venues, 0406 NOV). Meanwhile EDEN COURT host a
glut of Highland humdingers starting with soulsters SCOOTY & THE SKYHOOKS (05
NOV), before Blazin Fiddler IAIN MACFARLANEs GALLOP TO CALLOP (EC 06 NOV),
INVERNESS CHORAL performing Rossinis The Petite Messe (19 NOV), DUNCAN
CHISHOLMs THE GATHERING (26 NOV), and reminding us that Christmas is but a
heartbeat away the HIGHLAND HOSPITALS ANNUAL CAROL CONCERT (27 NOV)
featuring a massive choir of nurses and other health board staff.
Gig Of The Month? Surely RUFUS WAINWRIGHT at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION, 18 NOV.
Father Loudon and sister Martha have already played up here and now its the turn of Rufus
whose voracious enthusiasm for all sorts of musical creativity means hes as skilled at writing
opera as at crafting tender melodies or paying tribute to Judy Garland.

It seems only moments ago that we were all casting our cloots and getting ready for
the long, lazy days of summer. Now, in the blink of an eye, thats all gone and were
left to hunker down and prepare for the equally lengthy hours of darkness as winter
approaches. At least there are plenty of municipal events to keep a little brightness
in our hearts, all leading up to Xmas and Hogmanay.
One of the biggest is the CIVIC BONFIRE AND FIREWORKS DISPLAY in BUGHT
PARK on, you guessed, 05 NOV. The biggest bonfire in the Highlands is lit at
7.30pm and is followed shortly afterwards by the one of the most imaginative and
spectacular Fireworks Displays you will see anywhere on November 5th. This huge
event attracts crowds of up to 15,000 on the night so please allow plenty of time to
walk to the site. Strictly Disabled Parking Only on the night. It seems that just about
every event throughout the year is followed by fireworks, so perhaps weve got a bit
blas about the whole gunpowder and pyrotechnics thing, but the Inverness display
is always impressive enough to, literally, reignite a sense of wonder.
As we said, the holiday season is almost upon us and though the supermarkets
may have been hawking festive paraphernalia since the dog-end of August, we
resist getting excited about it all until the official CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCHON PARADE, taking place this year on 20 NOV. Santas joined by the Provost
and friends to flick the switch, with a parade from 5.45pm (from Crown Primary),
followed by the traditional DING DONG MERRILY OLD HIGH Carol Service at the Old
High Church, commencing at 6.30pm.
More impressive lights on show at COLOURS OF CLUNY on CLUNY HILL, FORRES
(0913 & 1620 NOV). An interactive family show which has been developed by
the same creative team who are behind the multi-award winning Pitlochry sound
and light show, The Enchanted Forest, it follows a route that begins close to the
town centre with an illuminated walk through Grant Park and up Cluny Hill, before
culminating in a show-stopping finale at the historic Nelsons Tower.
Throughout the year there have been some interesting talks at EDEN COURT
from notable adventurers and theres another one, LEO HOULDING on 15 NOV.
Renowned for his audacious ascents of epic faces he led a successful expedition
in 2015 to a magnificent and massive cliff in Arctic Greenland known as the Mirror
Wall, his first major expedition since becoming a father and the loss of his great
friend and partner Sean Stanley Leary. In this new show, Leo reflects on the
conflict between a life of extreme adventure and the responsibilities and homely

Our Highland clubs were always going to have a lot to live up to after last season
and although Caley finally seem to be kicking into gear, most notably being the only
domestic team to take points off Celtic by October, ROSS COUNTY have yet to truly
sparkle. Theyll be put to the test by the visit of reviving RANGERS on 05 NOV and
you can expect fireworks on the pitch as befits the date. ICT themselves will also
be looking to get another notable scalp when ABERDEEN come to town on 19 NOV.
An interesting indoor event is the HIGHLAND WHEELCHAIR CURLING TRIPLES
COMPETITION at INVERNESS ICE CENTRE from 1517 NOV. One of the few winter
sports to have enthusiastically embraced participation by those with disabilities,
wheelchair curling is rapidly growing in popularity and the HWCT has become one
of the most significant competitions in the calendar, aided by main sponsors Tesco
Inverness, who along with Inverness Ice Centre, Highland Council Common Good
Fund and Dicksons of Inverness have done much to encourage and promote it.
Participants from all over Scotland and the North of England will be eager to lift the
trophy, so its well worth heading along to watch.

THEATRE
If theres one area of entertainment that has improved dramatically up here in the
last decade, its the rise in quality of the comedians making the long journey North.
Of course some, like ROY CHUBBY RACIST BROWN, who plays IRONWORKS on
11 & 12 NOV would, in our humble opinion be far better off staying as far away from
us as possible, but fortunately theres more than enough excellence from other folk
to compensate for his hateful nonsense. MARK STEEL [1] for example. A relative
veteran of what was once called the alternative comedy scene, Steel is as
incisive and inventive as ever, as youll see if you go to watch him at EDEN COURT
on 09 NOV and CRAIGMONIE CENTRE on 13 NOV. His new show, called Who Do I
Think I Am? documents his search for his biological parents and manages to be
both moving and, of course, very funny.
DANIEL SLOSS [2] is a comedian of a slightly more recent vintage, but is enjoying
remarkable success. He consistently sells out shows in Edinburgh, plays all over
the world, has done a TedX Talk and even has a pilot show for Warner Brothers in
development. See what the fuss is all about at EDEN COURT on 26 NOV.
Stateside success on Americas Got Talent meant that last months show by TAPE
FACE [3] (the mime artist previously known as The Boy With Tape On His Face) had
to be postponed. The rescheduled date is at EDEN COURT on 23 NOV. Be there.
Theres some good drama at EDEN COURT, a highlight being LADY MACBETH:
UNSEX ME HERE [4] on 17 NOV. Its a piece of dance theatre with cast of three
male dancers represent one of Shakespeares most complex women by exploring
the relationship between masculinity and femininity. Using Shakespeares
language as the source, British Sign Language is used to create choreography,
producing a piece of visceral dance & movement.
The previous night, 16 NOV, EDEN COURT is again the venue for your diary, this
time for THE UNDERGROUND MAN. Adapted by Nick Wood from Mick Jacksons
Booker Prize shortlisted novel, the man of the title is William John Cavendish
Scott-Bentinck, the 5th Duke of Portland an eccentric English aristocrat whose
imagination and curiosity know no bounds. With live music and a specially
commissioned score this is a free flowing performance mixing hilarity and a
curious profundity.
Humour of a simpler stripe, though no less entertaining comes with JACK & THE
BEANSTALK, the first panto of the season, at FLORIANS from 0210 DEC. More
about that and the other pantos next month.
Or maybe you can find out about them ahead of time from TV Psychic Tony
Stockwell whos performing an evening of mediumship at EDEN COURT on 15
NOV. To be honest, we much prefer the magic of JAMIE RAVEN [5], who brings
the skills that he demonstrated so gloriously on Britains Got Talent to EDEN
COURT on 24 NOV. Just like that

Eden Court
Bishops Road, Inverness 01463 234234
As youll see from this issue, there
are plenty of reasons to visit Eden
Court this month. Not just the plethora
of theatre, dance and music (plus
a fair few Pokmon stops), but also
the attraction-packed Inverness Film
Festival. So its more than likely that
youll find yourself hanging around and
fancy a bite to eat. While the usual
instinct might be to head for one of the
many restaurants lining the stretch of
river by the venue, what you might not
think of is eating at Eden Court itself.
