1. DENIM FABRIC

Denimis a sturdy cotton warp-faced twill textile in which the weft passes under two or
more warp threads. This twill weaving produces the familiar diagonal ribbing of the denim that
distinguishes it from cotton duck (a linen canvas).
It is a characteristic of most indigo denim that only the warp threads are dyed, whereas
the weft threads remain plain white. As a result of the warp-faced twill weaving, one side of the
textile then shows the blue warp threads and the other side shows the white weft threads. This is
why blue jeans are white on the inside. The indigo dyeing process, in which the core of the warp
threads remains white, creates denim's fading characteristics, which are unique compared to every
other textile.
The term "Denim" has originated from the city of Nimes in France where "serge de Nimes" was
manufactured. Denim is made from a vat dye, the Indigo dye, which is applied to cotton fabric in
loosely held form in layers. As far as manufacturing process of denim is concerned, it is similar to
that of Grey fabric up to the process of weaving with the only difference that in case of Denim
Fabric, it is dyed at the stage of sizing where as in case of Grey Fabric, the decision regarding
dyeing stage depends upon the finished product.

2.4 COMPARATIVE COST ANALYSIS

In domestic and national market, denim fabric is sold in per Kilogram basis, whereas in
international market, denim fabric is sold in per meter basis. It is cheaper to get fabric on
per kilogram basis but the quality of the fabric is not guaranteed. It may be useful to the
local tailor shop but for bulk manufacturing and for brands of denim garments this source
would not be appropriate.

More of national market and international market sells denim fabric in per meter basis and
the price range varies as nature of fabric varies.

In domestic market, the costliest place to source is Tirupur whereas the cheapest is
Chennai. In national market, the costliest place to source is Gujrat whereas cheapest place
is Tamil Nadu. In international market, the costliest place to source is Canada whereas
cheapest place is Thailand and Bangladesh.

In a wider view, sourcing of denim fabric can be done from many places but the above
tables conclude that the best supplier and place to source denim fabric on the basis of cost
are ThakurdasCoithram (Chennai), Neha Textile Mills (Gujrat), Narula and sons company
Ltd (Thailand)

Different washes are applied after manufacturing or during manufacturing of denim

garment.

as per the washes, nature of denim fabric and the quantity of washes applied.
