Summer is finally officially here…we at Thunder Roads
have been very busy trying to cover all the rides, parties
and events all over the place. Seemingly, an impossible
feat as there is so much going on in different places all
at the same time. While we cannot be at all the events,
we will try to remain committed to cover the events of our
advertisers and sponsors as a priority. It is a pleasure to
support those that support the biker community and our
magazine and I believe it is those people and biker friendly
businesses that are most deserving of event coverage.
Deadline for advertising and getting events listed in the
magazine is always the 15th prior to the month of print. Go
coming in. I look forward to riding with you and when you
to our website: www.thunderroads-ny.com to get events

your gear and equipment before you take off for a ride.
And always ride like you are a target and be prepared to
maneuver out of a dangerous situation at every moment.
Let’s try to keep the wreckless driving down to a minimum
so we can all ride another day. Don’t forget to stop and
offer a hand to any stranded bikers you may come across,
regardless of what kind of bike they ride. It could be you
that needs gas or a hand next time. We are all united in
our passion and love of the wind in our face and the throttle

Harley Rendezvous Classic 2010
June 25, 26, 27 - Indian Lookout Country Club
1142 Batter Street, Pattersonville, NY, 12137

This annual event is staged on 200 acres, with 80 acres designated for camping
in the beautiful Hamlet of Mariaville, NY. The Harley Rendezvous is, in my opinion,
the best of ALL New York State motorcycle rallies and definitely one of the best
adult motorcycle rallies in the US. Adult camping rallies bring in more bikers than
motorcycle enthusiasts, and the “Vous” is always a great time with real bikers.
No attitudes, no weapons, no bullshit, but plenty of bikes, beer and boobs. Just
fun, fun, fun... with a little public nudity and drunken antics (perhaps a small
understatement here... if you ever went... you would understand). There are rules
to follow, however, but they are nothing more than you would expect from a party
at your own house. The top rule being: “RESPECT”... respect the staff, each
other, and the environment. If you’ve never been to Harley Rendezvous you’ve
been missing out on a party of a lifetime. But as far as I can see this is one of
the greatest times of the year and will be here each and every year. Too much
goes on with the scheduled events, vendors, bands, bikes shows and more than
I could possible give justice to in words... so after a little history lesson, I will let
some pictures do the talking... and hope to see you at Harley Rendezvous 2011.
Thunder Roads New York is proud to be the home state of such a great REAL biker
rally. Others make the annual pilgrimage from all over the US to get to the “Vous”.
Thank you, Frank, Antoinette, and all the staff for your hospitality.
William C. Frohmiller (owner/editor)

History:
In 1979 the first Harley Rendezvous founded by: Kemp O’Connell was held at
the Washington County Fairgrounds in Greenwich, NY. The ‘84 ‘Vous” was held
at Frosty Acres, just down the road. Later that year Kemp acquired the roughly
two hundred acres that would become Indian Lookout Country Club1142 Batter
Street, Pattersonville, NY, 12137; The Rendezvous found a permanent home and
has been there since. 1988 saw the first Harley rendezvous Video, which has
not only a lot of entertainment, but a lot of background. Through the late ‘80s and
early ‘90s, there were some serious doubts about the future of the event. Harley
filed for trademark infringement back in ‘92 or ‘93 for the unauthorized use of the
“Harley” name. In 1999 the case was “settled,” because it’s still called the Harley
Rendezvous, although they do welcome all kinds of bikes.
In 1994, an era came to an end. the man who started the “Vous”: Kemp
O’Connell (1953-1994) departed us and is now riding and partying with the angels.
Faith in one man’s idea, his dream of an event where all bikers of all persuasions
could come together and party their asses off every year, year after year. Faith in
his dream of a place where all would be welcome, whether long-time attendees
or “Vous-gins” (the popular contraction of “rendez-Vous vir-gin”) whether Staff or
attendee, regardless of club or association affiliation, politics, religion, or anything
else, as long as they all held to the One Rule: “Respect.”
The Rendezvous –and all the peculiar and particular responsibilities that
entailed—was handed off to Frank Potter and, because this is a family affair, it
involved his wife, Antoinette, and his sons, Rick and Bill and, subsequently, their
wives and children. The official website, harleyrendezvous.com, was registered in
1998 In 2001 flush toilets made their debut for Staff and Attendees!

THE RHODES “HOW LONG/ALL YOU’VE GOT TO DO”
If the calendar read 1965 with the British Invasion at full swing and American Garage Rock pumping throughout the
heartland of the U.S.A. the Rhodes would most certainly be some of the cream that rose to the top. These four feisty
lads have released their most recent undertaking a CD single that is a follow up to their first full length CD “Songs from
a Northern Town” and it does not disappoint solidifying their influences from pre Sgt Pepper Beatles, The Dave Clark
Five and Barry and the Remains. However the music of the Rhodes are all original that would fit in well in a 60’s style
Discotheque with gyrating Go-Go Girls on the cusp of the Psychedelic era however is a welcome breath of fresh air
in today’s rather overly tech laden music of today. The Rhodes in effect have successfully straddled the decades and
deliver a product that is fresh, energetic and most of all feel good music for the modern audience as well as Baby
Boomers looking for a connection point to Pop Music’s colorful past. http://the-rhodes-music.com/

REDDAN BROTHERS BAND “SKELETON KEY SESSIONS”

Blues have always been considered the roots of what American Rock stands today and though it has morphed and
homogenized throughout the decades there are artists who up the energy level however never lose sight of where it all
began. Thus we have the Reddan Brothers Band a blues power trio that accomplishes the feat without compromising
the style they subscribe to. John Reddan (lead guitar/vocals) is a journeyman bluesman who played alongside the
late legendary Bill Perry for the last five years of his life. While Prodigy drummer brother Chris hit the road early and
hard with Papa Chubby. Mike Garafalo (Bass) although not related rounds this trio out tightly. From the opening riffs of
Fast World to urban flavored Off the top through the heavy blues of Black Water & That’s how I know. The Reddans

Proud To Be An American
Flying Old Glory on Motorcycles
By Shelly Horan
Bikers are an incredibly patriotic crowd. I often see the U.S. flag gracing
the rear of motorcycles as we ride around… bringing a lump to my throat
at the display of such pride. For those thinking about adding flags to your
bike, consider this… there is a protocol for displaying this patriotic symbol.
While it’s not specifically addressed in the U.S Code, as it is when dealing
with an automobile, you can read between the lines to determine how the
flag should be flown on the back of your ride. When the United States flag is
flown alone on your motorcycle, flag etiquette calls for it to be either centered
on the bike or mounted to its “marching right”; its own right as the vehicle is
moving forward (which would be the right side of the motorcycle to the rider’s
perspective when sitting astride). If the U.S. flag is displayed on your bike
with another flag of any type, it should be positioned to its “marching right;”
that is, to the rider’s right sitting on the motorcycle. When the U.S. flag is on
your bike with other non-national flags (POW/ MIA, service banners, fraternal
flags, etc.), the U.S. flag is placed at the center and at the highest point of
the group. According to the United States Flag Code, NO flag should ever be
larger or displayed higher than the U.S. flag. If the U.S. flag is displayed on
your bike with those of any other nation, the flags should be approximately
equal in size and flown from separate staffs of the same height, with the U.S.
flag to the marching right and other countries’ flags arranged to the left in alphabetical order in English. International usage
forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace. The order of precedence for flags
generally is nations first, states (host state first, then others in the order of admission) districts and territories (Washington DC,
Puerto Rico, etc.), military (in order of establishment: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force), then any others. Also
noteworthy, when the American flag is painted on the side of a motorcycle or other vehicle, the custom is that the stars face
toward the front of the vehicle, regardless of which side the flag is on (giving the impression that the flag is flying in the wind
as the vehicle moves forward). The flag of the United States of America represents a living country and is itself considered a
living thing. Proper display reflects pride in country and respect for your motorcycle! Taking this one step further, there are also
proper procedures for disposing of U.S. flags when they are old, torn, worn, or dirty. The flag, when it is in such condition that it
is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Most American Legion
Posts regularly conduct a dignified flag burning ceremony, often on Flag Day, June 14th. Many Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout
Troops, and Girl Scout Troops retire flags regularly as well. Contact your local American Legion Hall or Scout Troop to inquire
about the availability of this service.

Tech Tips
VERY IMPORTANT
TO INSURE LONG ENGINE LIFE
AND
BEST ENGINE PERFORMANCE
ON A NEW OR REBUILT ENGINE
THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES SHOULD BE FOLLOWED!
Article by: Matt Hanson, M & M Choppers, Inc. Galva, KS

1 Never allow the engine to lug. Anytime you hear RPM’s drop or run at slower city riding
speeds, drop down a gear or two and allow the engine to spin freely.
2 Do not allow the engine to idle for any excessive length of time. Avoid stop and go traffic
situations. Lack of airflow to the engine causes uneven heating and possible
overheating, causing rapid excessive wear. See note on proper engine warm up
below.
3 Always use a good grade of gasoline. Premium only, no alcohol, 91 grade octane or
higher.
4. Avoid subjecting new engine to excessively high engine RPM’s. The first 500 miles or
so should be on the easy side of normal (around 4,500 max.) 3,000 rpm is best cruise
speed. 3,500 rpm for Dressers or trailer towing. No trailer towing on new engines. This
excludes engines that have been broke in on the dyno.
5 Have the engine professionally serviced, checked and tuned between 500 and 1,000
miles.
6 For all Pre-Evolution engines. Occasionally check head bolt and cylinder base nut
torque.
OIL RECOMMENDATIONS
1 Use only a good grade of motorcycle oil. No car oils!
2 Normal use 30o F to 95oF 20w50
3 Extreme Summer 60o F to 110o F SAE50
4 After break-in synthetic oil may be used. Lucas and Redline both offer a very good
product and are highly recommended.
5 Change engine oil frequently. Do not exceed 2,500 miles between changes. Synthetic
oil offers slightly extended drain intervals.

PROPER ENGINE WARM UP IS AS FOLLOWS….

1. Do not use choke or enrichner any longer than absolutely necessary. Shut completely off
as soon as possible. Keep engine spinning freely using throttle.
2. Try not to allow engine to run longer than one minute without air flow.
3. Ride bike slowly keeping engine spinning freely until thoroughly warmed up. Usually 3 to 5
miles or so.

The Passing Of Sputnik,
“Legislative  Warrior”
It is with heavy
heart that the
National  Coalition
Of Motorcyclists
announces the
passing of William
“Sputnik” Strain,
legendary bikers
rights activist from
the Lone Star  State.
According to the
Texas Motorcycle
Rights  Association;
“Our  great Leader,
Sputnik, passed
away suddenly at
approximately 5:00
AM June 24,  2010
from a massive heart
attack.” Sputnik,
inspired in the early nineties after attending the NCOM
Convention in Atlantic City, was instrumental in  organizing
the grass roots effort to repeal the mandatory helmet law in
Texas. Not  stopping there, the “Legislative Warrior” spread
the word throughout the  motorcycling community with his
“Five Steps to Freedom” to “Take back our  country” and, in
turn, inspired countless motorcyclists across the country to
become politically active. In Texas, he went on to spearhead
election campaigns to get bikers  elected to public office and
formed the most effective caucus in the state,  eventually
enacting numerous biker-friendly laws and killing not only
every  anti-biker bill proposed but the political careers of
those who dared to  introduce them. Sputnik wrote the
book on Texas politics, literally, as school textbooks  have
chronicled his achievements.
In addition to founding the TMRA2, Sputnik was a
longtime member of the  NCOM Legislative Task Force,
and served as NCOM-LTF Chairman the past three  years
despite his failing health.
“Sputnik believed in everything he said and losing that
determination  will be a great loss to the motorcycling
community.  The greatest tribute  to him is to push forth with
our fight for freedom and not let his  death be in vain,” said
James “Doc” Reichenbach III, Chairman of the NCOM Board
of Directors and State President of ABATE of Florida,  Inc.
Echoing the sentiments expressed by the entire motorcycle
community, NCOM  Founder Richard M. Lester said;
“Sputnik is so universally loved and respected,  from
MRO leadership to COC patch holders and from bikers on
the street to state  and federal lawmakers, that his passing
leaves a void which can only be filled  by all of us moving
forward together with his spirit and resolve.”   Funeral/
Memorial  Services are pending. The upcoming 26th Annual
NCOM Convention in Albuquerque, N.M. next May 5-8,
2011, will be dedicated to  his memory.

The 2nd Annual Catskill Reservoir
Run with Pete Shanley
Article and Pictures by Gina Marafioti

This Ride was a Huge Success! There

were over 120 registrants for the event, plus
passengers brought the total to 160 people...
WOW!
Sunny, warm and lots of miles to cover, Pete
started his run out of Woodstock Harley Davidson
in Kingston, NY. There were people that came
from New Hampshire, Mass., New England and all around our beautiful
Tri-State area. The ride started out with a rumble that ripped through
some mountainous roads and small illages. People would wave and
smile as this tremendous force would enter their town! Reservoirs
included the Ashokan, Papacton, Neversink and the Rondout, all which
gave everyone a chance to stop and take pictures and stretch their legs
during this 160 mile trip. Everyone had a positive attitude and seemed
to really enjoy themselves. Afterward there was a party which offered
a BBQ, Live DJ, Bike Games (including bite the weenie and slow race
with prizes) and later followed by live music from the Anthony K Band!
The stars were shining when the party came to an end somewhere
around 11pm. Pete is already starting to put together a run for next
year and will keep you posted on a September 11 run he’s planning.

Road Rash - Ouch!
Kevin G. Charleville

Hopefully you will never experience the pain and suf-

fering of this terrible byproduct of skidding along the
pavement with your body. However, it does happen to
some unfortunate few. Road Rash is basically severe
abrasions, the loss of layers of skin. Years ago, a good
friend of mine swerved to miss a deer that had darted out
in front of him, dropped his bike down on the concrete
deck, and skidded on the pavement for awhile, then onto
the gravel shoulder. Needless to say, he spent about a
month in a hospital burn unit. Burn unit you say? Yes, a
burn unit. For those of you who already know, I do not
have to tell you that severe road rash victims are treated
and cared for like burn victims. In my career I have seen
many road rash victims. Not only from motorcycle ac-
cidents, but bicycle, ATV’s, sledding, and cars/trucks.
The most vulnerable areas are the legs, arms and back,
however, they can occur anywhere on the body. Usu-
ally, the severity of the road rash depends on the speed
one was going, the type of pavement, and the amount of
protective gear you have on. Like mentioned above, we
treat these as if they were burns, (first, second, third de-
gree). We use a sterile dry dressing to cover the wound
ASAP. This is to help prevent bacteria from entering
the vulnerable open area. We normally do not remove
foreign material from the wounds, this may cause the
victims unnecessary pain, the hospital will remove them.
We do not use any burn creams or oils because this may
cause additional burning and pain. If the pain is severe
enough, we will use pain management. So, how do we
help prevent such a terrible thing from happening to us?
Ride safely and be constantly aware of road hazards,
(goes without saying), wear appropriate protective gear,
(Leather, Denim, Kevlar is the best protection), and take
an approved motorcycle riders safety course. These
courses are very informative and they help teach you
ways to stay and/or get out of trouble. My friend above
did survive his unfortunate ordeal; however it did cause
him to quit riding. It is a beautiful summer, ride safe, ride
free, and please take care of the children. God bless our
servicemen and veterans.
