Quick picks to add some spice to your week

A regal Halloween
Combine the creepiness of Halloween with rollicking,
interactive historical theater and you get Halloween Daze
& Spooky Knights the final weekend of the Pennsylvania
Renaissance Faire.
Mystery and mayhem will greet visitors to the Shire,
whose resident royalty and peasantry will be beefed up by
hauntings and things that go bump in the night.
Visitors can come in home-fashioned costumes for fun
and prizes and join in the grand All Hallows Eve celebration.
There also will be a special costume contest just for children, who are welcome to trick-or-treat but the youngsters must perform tricks to collect treats!
(To be sure to get all the goodies, pick up a Shire Trick-orTreat bag at the Informistress Booth.)
The final weekend also features a Halloween Treasure
Hunt to add to the mystery. Somewhere in the Shire, a treasure has been buried. Grab a treasure map (again from the
Informistress Booth) and follow the clues.
The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, held on the grounds
of Mount Hope Estate, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim,
closes out its summer season with this nod to Halloween
on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Admission is $30.95 for adults, $11.95 for children 5 to 11.
For more information, call 665-7021 or visit parenfaire.

Joel Smallbone and Bianca A. Santos star in Priceless.

Faith-based melodrama about human trafficking drags

ROGER MOORE

MIAMI HERALD

ou have to appreciate the

high-mindedness of Priceless, a faith-based drama
in which a transporter makes it
his business to free Mexican women
hes unknowingly delivered into the
Southwestern U.S. sex trade.

But other good intentions director Ben Smallbone crafting a star vehicle for his hunky Nashville singer
brother Joel tend to trip this sluggish melodrama up.
Joel Smallbone stars as James, just
a guy with anger issues driving a third
hand box truck through the desert
Southwest. He used to be married,

now hes widowed. The truck used to

be a U-Haul, now its got faded party
time stickers, sort of hiding what hes
got inside.
He doesnt know what his cargo is,
doesnt question the folks who give
him wads of cash to do the driving,
until he runs off the road and hears
whimpering from the back. He breaks
the lock, and voila two young Mexican sisters appear (Bianca A. Santos,
Amber Midthunder).
The films most honest moment has
James slam the door shut, as if he
doesnt want to see what hes a party
to. He changes his mind, helps them
clean up, even buys them fresh dresses. The films most dishonest moment

EL

comes at the point of delivery, when

the recipient (Jim Parrack) shows up
with a van full of women, and two roses for the girls.
James acts shocked. Hes not living
up to his favorite tattoo Let all you
do be done in love. This is about sex,
not love.
And hes the only person on Earth
who hasnt figured out exactly what
these two young women have been
smuggled into the U.S. to do.
Veteran character actor David
Koechner plays a blunt but sympathetic hotel manager who provides
James with a motorcycle, then a car, to
track down the smuggling ring. And he

lays down the films faith-based message.

The flames of tragedy can refine you.
But Smallbone the director makes sure Smallbone the
star gets the star treatment here. The most beautifully
coiffed truck driver in North America frets with his forelock in most every shot. First thing he does after crashing
his truck? Flip his perfectly trimmed hairdo out of his eyes.
James narrates, blankly, and acts as if theres no real rush
in saving these two unspoiled immigrants from their sex
trade fates. Smallbone should be leaning into the frame,
guiltily rushing hither and yon to undo what Ive done,
somehow.
Instead, he just comes off as a vain first-time leading man.
The film just drags, content to stare longingly at Smallbones chiseled good looks and perfectly trimmed stubble.
The character arc, from nonbeliever to righteous man receiving his first God shot, is blase.
Koechner, consigned to comic jerk roles decades ago, may
have relished his rare shot at a dramatic role. But theres
not a lot to the character, just motorcycles, a hat and other
conveniences that will aid James in his quest.
Priceless isnt a particularly dislikable film, just an exhausted one a couple of scenes have sardonic bite, the
final confrontation is staged with some thought.
As for the Smallbones (Joel is in the band King & Country with another sibling, Luke) sometimes, having a relative behind the camera looking out for you is a help. But
sometimes, theyre just enablers playing to your vanity.

n Priceless is playing at the Penn Cinema. Its rated PG-13 for

mature thematic material involving human trafficking and some

violence. Running time is 97 minutes.

usic For Everyone is having a big year.

The nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating the
power of music in Lancaster County
is celebrating its 10th year. Music For
Everyone also surpassed the $1 million mark in grants awarded to local
schools and programs.
In September, the organization celebrated with its annual Un-Gala
event. More than 600 people attended
and raised more than $120,000 for the
organization.
But tickets to the event were $150
each, and Music For Everyone founder John Gerdy wanted to provide a
more accessible way for the supporters to celebrate.
So the organization will
host a Tellus Takeover
tonight. The 21-andover event will feature
eight musical acts on
four stages at the Lancaster venue.
Since there have
been so many people of all backgrounds and financial means
who have helped
contribute to our
success over the
past decade, we wanted
to provide several opportunities to
thank those people and celebrate with
them, Gerdy says.
Alternative country rock band Slim-

EL

fit will headline the night. The lineup

also includes local acts Mark DeRose,
Lavacave and Tom Pontz, and touring acts Big Boy Brass, Kuf Knotz and
Swampcandy. The night
will end with dancing
and a set from DJ Uranko.
Around 8 p.m., Gerdy
will make some remarks
on behalf of Music For Everyone.
It will be a really laid-back,
celebratory
atmosphere,
Gerdy says.
Music For Everyone also will
raffle a one-of-a-kind guitar created and donated by the woodshop
at Tellus360. The guitar is made
from reclaimed plywood from former Atomic Design and Tait Towers
stages. Some of the wood is from a
stage on which Beyonce performed.
Raffle tickets for the guitar are 1 for
$5, 3 for $10 and 7 for $20. The
winner will be drawn Friday.
Music For Everyone also
will present two MFE Awards
at the Tellus Takeover event.
The MFE Award is presented to
people who have made significant
contributions to music education in the Lancaster community,
Gerdy says.
Tom and Gina Russo will receive
an award for their contributions
to the MFE in the Schools program,
which allows professional musicians
to work alongside music teachers in
local schools.

juggernaut.
Yeah. I mean, Ive
changed a lot. Ive healed
a lot. Ive healed a lot, she
said, pausing. Period.
But I she paused again
I feel like it would be so
strange to hear my music, or
hear anyones music really,
and not hear the change. I
change a lot and thats just
who I am.
The happiest that I am
is when Im just really truly
being myself and Ive always
said that to my fans and
guess what, they help me
make that real, she said.
Joanne, released Friday,
embarks on new territory as
Gagas voice takes the center stage. Theres no AutoTune on any of my vocals.
Not one, she said.
She started writing new
material two years ago, and
then at this years Super
Bowl she gave Mark Ronson
a demo of some songs (he
performed Uptown Funk
there with Bruno Mars).
He said to me, I know
you can write great songs,
(but) he said, ...What do
you HAVE to write about?
Thats what I want you to
write, she recalled.

The result is more emotional tracks compared to

past hits, ranging in topics from her love life to her
friends battle with cancer
to her aunt Joanne, who
died from lupus before Gaga
was born (Joanne is also Gagas middle name). The closing track, Angel Down, is
about Trayvon Martin.
It was really hard, she
said of writing personal
songs. But it was the best
thing I ever did going there,
because once you go there,
you cant get darker than
there cause you just got to
look inside and whatever
it is it is, and then you pick
yourself up and keep going.
Sinners Prayer sounds
like it could be played in a
Western with lyrics like,
Hear my sinners prayer/I
am what I am/And I dont
wanna break the heart of
any other man but you.
This album is about being tough, she said. I
come from a long line of
tough family (members)
and ... I wanted to write
a record that reminded
people that no matter what
perfect illusion you have of
me right that Im probably a lot like you.

CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE PLAYS WITH POLITICS

Bertold Brechts epic play opens tonight at Franklin & Marshall College

Henderson says. Students
should get a chance to live in
Brecht-world. Hes such an imposing influence on modern
theater.
And so, Caucasian Chalk Circle will open tonight at Roschel Performing Arts Center.
Its a great epic play, Henderson says. Brecht is so influential in theater.

Epic theater was a movement

in the mid-20th century to bring
a new kind of political theater to
the stage, often using nonrealism to heighten the experience.
Brecht wrote the play in 1944.
His greatest plays including
Mother Courage and Her Children, Galileo and The Good
Person of Szechwan were
all written during World War II
and reflected his strong opposi-

Caucasian here refers to the mountain

range in Georgia in eastern Europe.
Its a class play; its about who is allowed to have justice, the powerless
against the powerful, Henderson says.
Brecht uses music, masks, direct interaction with the audience and other
theatrical elements to tell the story.
The play is ritual meets carnival,
Henderson says. Its a world as big as
we need it to be and as intimate as you
need it to be.
A coup has turned the world upside
down, and the Georgian governor has
been murdered. The governors wife
is so worried about what to take with
her, she forgets about her baby son.
Grusha, a kitchenmaid in the palace,
rescues the baby and treks through
the Caucasian mountains with him.
She finds shelter with her brother and
is forced to marry a dying farmer. Soldiers relentlessly track Grusha through
the mountains and take the baby back.
The second act focuses on Azdak, a
clerk turned judge who is forced to decide whether the baby belongs to Grusha or the governors wife.
Many of Brechts plays have an especially dark view of life. Henderson says.
Caucasian Chalk Circle is different.
In this, it is more or less a happy
ending, he says.
Brecht has created a cynical world
but given it hope.
Grushas protection of this childs
life means something; it has to mean
something, Henderson says. By taking this child and working so hard
to protect him, she is really working
against that cynicism. This child is innocent; he deserves better.
No matter what happens, Grusha
never loses her will to save the child.
She gives the childs life meaning,
and she has people who will help her,
who will go out of their way to help her.
They see what she is trying to do and
they understand that its important,
Henderson says.
The reason I love this play is that the
characters are in survival mode, and
you might see a lot of people who might
be good people but the circumstances

19th-century tale with

a modern rock score
Elizabethtown College presents Spring Awakening
JENELLE JANCI

JJANCI@LNPNEWS.COM

hen Elizabethtown College produces its biennial

musical, it usually does so
without microphones.
The colleges partial thrust stage is
an intimate enough environment for
student actors to project their voices
atop the instrumentals. This years
show, the rock musical Spring Awakening, calls for a much different approach.
The student actors will use handheld microphones, just as the original
Broadway cast did. Male actors will
keep the microphones in their jacket
pockets, while female actors will have
to pass them off. Spring Awakening
opens today and runs on select dates
through Nov. 6.
Spring Awakening is based on
an 1891 book by Frank Wedekind.
The show follows a group of teenagers in 19th century Germany as they
address their sexual urges in a strict
society. Spring Awakening opened
on Broadway in 2006 and won eight
Tony awards, including best musical.
Ronks native and Conestoga Valley
High School graduate Jonathan Groff
played Melchior Gabor in the original
Broadway cast.
Millersville University is also producing Spring Awakening this year
Nov. 10-13.
Michael Swanson, associate professor of theater and director of theater
and dance at Elizabethtown College, says the show was chosen by the
schools play selection committee,
which comprises faculty members and
students.
Swanson says student enthusiasm
has been high for the show. He also
notes that there are several non-the-

14

ater majors in the cast.

Most of them would have been
around the age the characters are, or
just a little bit younger, when this play
came out, Swanson says. I think that
the rock score is appealing, still. And
certainly, lets be honest, its a play
about puberty, and very few of us cant
connect to that.
The issues the characters face transcend time, and the show has an element of blurring eras.
These
students
are
living in 1891, but in our heads,
theyre our peers, Swanson says.
Theyre our contemporaries. I
think thats one of the really unique
things about this show. We are really
folding those two times, and not just
arbitrarily.
This is heightened by pairing a 19th
century setting with a modern rock
score, with music by Duncan Sheik.
Sheik, a singer-songwriter from Montclair, New Jersey, received significant
radio play in the 90s for his song
Barely Breathing. Since, hes composed the music for several musicals,
including Twelfth Night and American Psycho. The shows book and lyrics are by Stephen Sater.
An eight-piece pit band will provide the instrumentals for the production.
In addition to using handheld microphones, the show poses some new
challenges for Elizabethtown Colleges student cast. Swanson says the
show requires more dancing than other musicals the college has produced.
Kristin Pontz is choreographing the
show.
Some of the cast members have a
particularly unique challenge playing up to eight different roles throughout the show.

just let them be individual adults, but
to make them societal adults that really dont always know what they should

Spring Awakening requires all of
its actors to switch mode on a dime,
Swanson says.

CHASING
THE LIGHT

RICHARD HERTZLER | STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

Shows in Columbia, York feature landscape paintings

by Kerry Sacco, who finds inspiration in elusive element
JANE HOLAHAN

JHOLAHAN@LNPNEWS.COM

erry Sacco is not interested

in creating exactly what she
sees in front of her.
The artist, whose work is being
shown at the Garth Gallery in Columbia and the PA Arts Experience Gallery in York, is more interested in the
elusive quality of the light, which in-

18

spires her as she paints.

Im always chasing the light, she
says. A glancing moment. Is it hitting
the side of the structure, is it shining
through the trees? Is it reflecting on
the river? I am always going for shadow and light.
She notes that sometimes she feels
like a shark circling the landscape.

You are looking for that elusive

light, she says. And when you see it,
you go for it.
Sacco sees how light changes during
the course of the day but also as she
travels to different regions.
Yes, I notice the difference in the
light from county to county from
Bucks County to Delaware to Chester
to Lancaster. I even think I see differences in the light near the river or on
the eastern side of the county.
She sees a practical reason for the
mystery of different light.
I think a lot of it has to do with
structures Im painting, with the natural materials used in each area, like red
bricks or stone, or even the trees that
grow there.
A former Delaware County resident,
Sacco graduated from Millersville

University in 1982. Off and on, she has

lived in Lancaster ever since.
Both of her gallery shows feature
landscape paintings.
The York show is titled Pathways.
I was looking at the imagery and I
noticed when I had my work laid out
that it was roads, trails, waterways.
Whether is was a path of light or something solid underfoot, I thought Pathways was a good title.
Her work at Garth is more diverse
and includes paintings of Lancaster
city, river scenes and the area around
Chiques Creek, where she once lived.
Since she was a child, Sacco has
drawn and painted and spent years
working in lithography, thanks to the
influence of her MU professor, Robert
Nelson.
I was always the artistic one in the
family, she says. There was no ques-

tion that this was what I was going to

do.
She praises her mother, who wanted
to be a dancer but went on to become a
physical education teacher.
I had a wonderful mother. She always encouraged me that if I liked
something, I should do it. I was always
encouraged to be a fine-arts major,
Sacco says. She was never pressured to
have a fall-back position as a teacher,
or look for a more practical vocation.
It is hard and scary to make your living as an artist, she adds. I surrounded myself with a group of friends and
mentors who taught me the realities of
entering shows, sending out press releases, not falling apart when you are
rejected.
After her mother died, Sacco decided
to go back to school at the Philadelphia

Family Tree by Kerry Sacco.

Academy of Fine Arts to study painting. Her medium is oil.

I love the layering and the luminosity of oils, she says, noting that
she likes the option of putting aside a
piece that might not be working.
Sometimes, you have to let it sit,
she says. I can come back to it, and
oil lets you do that.
The paintings can take on a life of
their own, Sacco says.
I will be painting on a day that is
not sunny and suddenly, the sun is
appearing in my painting, she says.
I dont set out for a specific mood or
emotion. I let the painting guide me
a little bit.
York artist Julie Yontz Rupp is

show.

horror is all psychological.

In the poem, published in 1845, a
young scholar sits in his chambers
studying forgotten lore before a dying
fire. He is distraught over the death of
his love, Lenore, contemplating the finality of death.
A scratching comes to the window
and the scholar goes over to investigate.
A raven flies into the room and lands
in the room on a bust of the Greek goddess Athena.
As the night goes on, the raven caws
out the same word over and over: nevermore.
What does it mean?
Doom overwhelms the young man,
who spirals into madness as the endless night goes on, a prisoner of his
own grief.

Last chance for frights

Columbia Market House, Tellus360
provide scares before, during big night
JANE HOLAHAN

JHOLAHAN@LNPNEWS.COM

Halloween arrives Monday. Youve

been to all the big haunts Field of
Screams, Jasons Woods. And youve
been terrified by headless horsemen
and zombie walks, haunted trails
and terrifying theatrical events.
But its the quirky things that
might just scare you most deeply.
Here are a couple to check out as
the witching hour descends upon us.
Columbia
Market
House
Have you ever been terrified by the
idea of being locked in a dungeon?
Shaking the bars and screaming
endlessly, dreading the darkness
of the night, buried deep in the

Tellus360 will recreate Edgar Allan Poes The Raven as a performance piece.

ground?
Its a universal terror, and the Columbia Market House wants you to
experience it.
The market at 15 S. Third St., Columbia, which still operates today.
was built in 1869. Through the years,
it was a festive place, where farmers
sold their goods and customers socialized and shopped.
But lurking beneath the grand
building is a dark and dank small
basement, long known as The Dungeon.
It was where drunks were held to
sleep it off, where murderers and
robbers were held, waiting to be
sent to Lancaster city for trial.
Vermin lived in the straw beds,
no lights shined (electricity didnt
come to the dungeon until the
1960s), the smell was fetid, the air
clammy and damp.
A maximum security cell was impenetrable. There was no escape.
Lets just hope they remember to

open the doors and let you out.

Tellus360
Now Edgar Allan Poe had his
issues with dungeons. Just read
The Pit and the Pendulum to
feel the terror.
But Poes torments in his famous poem The Raven come
from inside his own head, from
heartbreak and madness.
Tellus360 will pull out all the
stops as it recreates The Raven as a performance piece in
what Tellus co-owner Joe Devoy will describe only as a very
scary location in the cavernous building Monday night. The
room holds only 50 souls, so
make reservations.
The evening will include
haunting songs and crashing
music written for the occasion.
No special effects will be used
as the poem is being read. The

food

Among them are Walt Disney Worlds

catering team, Planet Hollywood in
Florida, and The Log Cabin restaurant and JMs Bistro in Lancaster
County.
Her local roots are evident in the restaurants offerings.
The menu at Cork & Cap is a single
page. The website describes the food
this way:
Our dishes pay homage to the rural heritage of Lancaster County, all
with an extra pinch of creative license.
Think Pennsylvania Dutch comfort
food with a contemporary, cosmopolitan twist.
Take, for example, the Dutch-Bound
Red Beet Salad ($6 small plate, $12
large).
The combination of mixed greens,
beets, red beet eggs, red onion, blue
cheese, walnuts and bacon with the
house vinaigrette dressing was surprisingly delicious.
We tried it simply because of its Lancaster County ties, but I usually dont
like red beets.
I do now.
Soup of the day was mushroom,
which was so rich and thick it must
have had a thousand calories, but
whos counting? ($3.50).
We also started with a crab dip appetizer, which at $11 would be fine for
a party of four. Again, creamy and perfectly seasoned, the appetizer came
with a variety of flatbread, breadsticks
and bread with which to indulge.
My entree was the Petite-Filet Stroganoff ($21). The filet was so tender it
melted like butter. (Note to romantic
first daters: this dish is layered with
garlic and shallots but oh so worth
it.)
My spouses entree was the Braised
Beef Brisket ($19), which arrived fancily layered with fresh veggies and tied

up with a carrot top. The

flavor was subtle, and my
spouse was expecting a bit
more spice. I thought it was
divine.
By dessert time, we were
very full, but ordered a caramel flan (which at $6 was
good, but not to die for) and
a piece of sour cream apple pie (also $6) to go. (My
spouse was pining for that
pie since eating it on a visit
years ago! Yes, it was that
good.)
So that brings us to the
service, the only disappointment in an otherwise
perfect evening.
Our server was noncommunicative, removed food
from the table without asking if we were done, never
offered us a dessert menu
and was just generally distant and nonaccommodating.
He half-heartedly took

our drink order, but another

server brought my spouses
Sam Adams because we got
tired of waiting. When he
finally returned later to the
table he said Do you have
any questions? What did
that mean? Were we ready
to order? Yes, yes, yes!
I cant describe the other
drink offerings here, because while our table had a
drink menu, which I said I
may look at later, our server
took it away before I had a
chance.
He was confusing at best,
and increasingly irritating
at worst.
The other server who
stepped in and helped us
out on a couple of occasions
was excellent, pleasant and
polite. In fact, we tipped her.
In all, it wouldnt keep us
from dining there again, because everything else was
absolutely perfect.

O
Cork & Cap Restaurant
STAFF

I look for three things when dining

out: comfortable ambiance, great food
and accommodating service.
The Cork & Cap Restaurant, part
of the historic multiuse complex Urban Place on New Holland Avenue,
knocked two of those out of the park
during a recent visit.
Its hard to beat the atmosphere.
The site once housed Lancaster Cork
Works, a 19th-century cork factory,
and later became home to local industrial giants Armstrong Cork and Kerr
Glass companies.
Today, the entire 300,000-squarefoot community has been beautifully
restored and houses retail, residential
and commercial tenants.

IncognEATo is ELs bi-weekly

restaurant review feature. A
rotating staff visits area restaurants and reports back on the
service, atmosphere and food
they experienced while dining
incognito. Bon Appetit!

in 2009, are among them.

The restaurant preserves the history of the facility with exposed wood
beams, and brick and stone walls lined
with antique wheels, cogs, grids and
other industrial touches.
Lighting is dim and romantic, but
not dark. Several dining areas offer
opportunities for small and large parties. There is also an equally appealing
rustic bar, and beautifully appointed,
clean restrooms (with full doors).
In short, the atmosphere, to my
spouse and me, was absolutely perfect.
On to the food.
Oh, the food!

and after getting a culinary arts degree worked for notable institutions.
