Leadership Styles

VLADIMIR PUTIN
Vladimir Putins leadership was riven with contradictions, and on the basis of these contradictions
very different evaluations of his presidency are possible. The contradictions themselves became a
source of Putins power. They allowed him to act in several different political and discursive spheres
at the same time, with a degree of credibility in each, although their genuine authenticity was
questioned. Arriving into the presidency in 2000 Putin declared his goal as the dictatorship of law,
and indeed this principle was exercised in the attempt to overcome the legal fragmentation of the
country in the federal system; but when it came to pursuing regime goals, it appeared more often
than not that the system ruled by law rather than ensuring the rule of law. This is just one example,
and there are many morethe revival of the party system, the development of civil society,
international integrationwhere the declared principle was vitiated by contrary practices. The most
interesting debates about Putins leadership are precisely those that examine whether the tensions
were contradictions, and thus amenable to resolution (non-antagonistic), or whether they were
antinomies (antagonistic contradictions) that could not be resolved within the framework of the
system itself. The first option allowed an evolutionary transcendence of the Putinite order; whereas
the second would require some sort of revolutionary rupture.

Donald Trump
Confidence
Love him or hate him but you cant ignore him. Donald Trumps confidence in what he believes in
makes him a perfect leader. Even after being saddled by allegations ranging from mafia ties to
unscrupulous business dealings to racial discrimination in the last four decades, Trump has
confidently steered towards a landslide victory in the Presidential Elections.
Authoratitive
Trumps authority over his subject matter is one of the qualities one must possess as a leader. Donald
Trump made it evidently clear in the run up to the elections that his foreign policy will be singularly
focused on Making America Safe Again by destroying radical Islamic terrorist groups, end the nuclear
deal with Iran and the ransom payments to the worlds number one state sponsor of terrorism.
Dauntless
Donald Trump has been dauntless in his criticism of what he believes in.
Earlier in the year, Trump said no one will be tougher on the Islamic State than himself if elected.
According to Trump, Islamic terrorism is eating up large portions of the Middle East and that is
something we would aim to completely destroy.
Deal-maker

Trump is a great negotiator and is known to understand complex deals coupled with his knowledge of
a wide variety of industries and businesses.
Prudent With Resources
Instead of hiring new people to work in government offices, Trump is proposing that nobody is able to
get a job in the federal workforce for at least the next four years.
Self-interest First
Trump has been clear in his election manifesto that he intends to bring the immigration system to
prioritize the interests of Americans first. Trump has proposed enforcing immigration laws at the
border and at the workplace.
Clear Priorities
Trump has time and again spoken of the federal governments duty to protect the rights of its
citizens.
Financial Understanding
Trump has a successful empire behind him, which he has led since taking over his fathers Fred
Trump's real estate and construction firm, which was later renamed as The Trump Organization.

Narendra Modi
Mr Modi's style of leading through checklists is pragmatic, but not the same as setting out a vision. It
appears to be the result of having led government at the state level, in Gujarat, for a dozen years. He
told The Economist this month that "I had been chief minister for a long time, I am the first prime
minister who was born in independent India, the first who has come to the post of prime minister
with a long experience of being the chief minister of a state." His administration was business-friendly
and those who knew him well in Gujarat, a state of 60m, say he considered Singapore's businessfriendly former leader, Lee Kuan Yew, an "icon" to follow. But running a massive, federal country like
India, with nearly 1.3 billion people and 36 states and territories, requires a different sort of
leadership. However much he concentrates power in his own hands, he cannot oversee sufficient
projects to transform India. Instead he needs to grow in the job, and articulate a bolder vision of what
he would like to achieve, build a broad and capable team, then enable others to deliver it. Mr Modi
needs to get beyond being a taskmaster and explain more clearly his broader sweep of goals.
Long term planning and clear focus. Modi sets goals and controls manpower to complete individual
tasks; he practically, directly supervises personnel even at the very bottom of the pyramid.
He is a risk-taker. He understands that if there's one way the state could turn eyes, that is by opening
the state. He knows the corporates would do the rest, all he has to do is tempt them in, and make
people - his end customers, believe that it is basically him who does it all. This is the smartest. An
open market model is his bait.
He is a thinker. As an analyzer he is, he ultimately knows what kind of effect would last-long on his
team, people and media. He would constantly make sure that somehow, people keep talking about
him. This maybe a typical politician's game, but Modi's style is different.

Most of all, he never lets anybody get their hands on his line of control, not even a little. He knows his
powers and most of all, his weaknesses. Every company needs to know this. He knows these and
never lets his opponents know any of that. (For all we know, most of the notorious news that we get
on him are perfectly devised - illogical but smart and impeccable; ways of branding). This makes him
and his enterprise (state) invincible.

Justin Trudeau
1. BUILD A BRILLIANT TEAM
Before his landslide election last November, Trudeau and his key advisors focused on building the
best team possible, recruiting individuals with a broad range of personal and professional experiences
that reflected the gamut of Canada's cultural and religious diversity.
2. OPEN UP AND SUSTAIN REAL CONVERSATIONS
To the surprise of commentators and critics, Trudeau has shown himself remarkably willing to engage
with people who disagree with him and consider their views. Hes evolving the relationship between
the public and government and has made transparent, genuine dialogue the new standard,
3. Emotional Intelligence Matters
Without a doubt, between the technologists and economists in Davos, the median IQ was off the
charts. But its not Trudeaus IQ thats getting attention its his emotional intelligence, or EQ.
4. Humility
Lets be clear, politics is not a game for the humblest among us. But as far as politicians go, Trudeau is
refreshingly humble on both a personal level, and in his leadership of the country.
5. Positivity
Especially in contrast to outgoing Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Trudeaus campaigning and
governing is marked by an incredibly positive tone. While most of Europe and the US has been fearing
refugees and closing their borders, Trudeau not only welcomed refugees; he went to the airport to
welcome Canadas first Syrian refugees as they arrived in the country. Where others saw potential
problems and concerns, Trudeau led through a lens of seeing what is possible.
