This study used descriptive method using a questionnaire. Subject of this study were mothers that have children aged 1-5 years and ever did self-medication
for diarrhea. The number of sample is 100 respondents and drawn by random sampling. Data were analyzed using chi square test.
The result showed that 49 respondents (49%) have sufficient knowledge, and 97 respondents (97%) have done correct self-medication. Data analysis with chi
square test demonstrated an association between mothers knowledge and the self-medication for diarrhea in infants in Matagara village, Tangerang with a
weak correlation value, which is R 0.133.
Key words: knowledge, self medication, diarrhea

BACKGROUND
It is estimated that, children under five years old have 203 episodes of diarrhea
per year and four million children die worldwide due to diarrhea and malnutrition.

more easily than older children (IDAI, 2008).
Selection of self-medication for treating diarrhea toddlers often do. It describes
the problems self-medication diarrhea needs to get attention and good treatment, given
the lack of public knowledge about the symptoms and the use of drugs that are less
precise.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION
The level of knowledge is closely related to an act that is swamedikasi or self
medication. The test results with chi square test with a 5% error rate values obtained
P.Value 0,031 or <0.05 then Ha accepted and Ho rejected, meaning that there is a
relationship between the level of knowledge of mothers with action swamedikasi
diarrhea in infants in the village Matagara Tangerang. Furthermore, to determine how
much the relationship between independent variables (knowledge) with the dependent
variable (swamedikasi) performed with correlation of 0.133 and R values obtained
with the interpretation of the correlation value is low. The correlation value from 0.1
to 0.29 are interpreted to have a low correlation (Yamin and Kurniawan, 2009).
Although the results of the correlation is low, but it has a positive relationship,
meaning that if the level of knowledge increases, swamedikasi action will also
increase.

CONCLUSION
The result showed that 49 respondents (49%) have
sufficient knowledge, and 97 respondents (97%) have done
correct self-medication. Data analysis with chi square test
demonstrated an association between mothers knowledge
and the self-medication for diarrhea in infants in Matagara
village, Tangerang with a weak correlation value, which is R
0.133.
