Challenge of Citizenship

This section of the book, which consists of eight articles, points out the idea of social
responsibility. After gaining personal autonomy, this is the part where our discovered selves
must take part in the bigger picture as we expand our moral space little by little. We step out and
make moves that can contribute to a better social harmony and inspire others to do so.
Of course it wont be easy to persuade others into the same idea. As the class have
discussed before, it is hard for us to form an active community that will serve and defend the
state, for we have not felt or experienced the state being a part of our daily lives and of ourselves
as individuals. That causes the citizens to doubt the system and act in our own moral space. We
choose people who are substantial to us and serve the interests of those who are within our circle.
And when conflict arises, we have to choose our loyalty between our circle and our community.
The author, Randy David, states that as an individual, we have to step up, be flexible and adapt
change and differences with one another to achieve that social harmony that we are hoping for.
This chapter focuses on the greater good of the community and that unity can be achieved with
identical collective interests so cheating the system can be avoided. Since in his article The
Wallet Test, it showed that values can come from any social status that we belong to. If we can
just eliminate the concept of stranger or others, we may be able interact with each other
better, regardless of who we are, and have more respect for our differences and accepting at the
same time.

I really love how Randy David emphasizes that we must move forward for the future
generation. We must step out and invent the proper tools that are appropriate for our present time
so that the next people can embody our virtues and take another step forward. As we expand our
community, we also grow as a nation and soon as humanity.
