WM-L780A LED MARINE LANTERN

INSTALLATION
LANTERN OUTLINE
The WM-L780A Long Range LED marine lantern is specially designed for use in various marine
aids to navigation i.e., lighthouses, major lightbeacons, fairway buoys, etc., for medium to long
range requirements. The WM-L780A Long Range LED marine lantern is build on a multi-tiers
configuration for various effective light range requirement. It utilises 4x quadrant, each of single
moulded acrylic lens optic to form a full circular (diameter) of 702mm with the standard 1-tier
lantern. Adopting the latest in LED technology and utilising a single-chip flash controller, a
double-layered LED light board, a Fresnel lens with circumferential focus, and all housed within
a rugged aluminium alloy lantern base. Using the most advanced control circuitries, it is capable
of self-testing the system during power up and it automatically manages data storage.
The lantern is completely assembled, pre-wired and is ready for installation at site. The installer
just need to connect the power cable coming out of the marine lantern to battery terminals. The
entire lantern housing is sealed to IP68 (ingression protection) and practically, there is no
requirement for end-user to access the internal of the lantern housing. As such, the internal
condition is very much preserved, resulting with a prolonged operating lifespan. The lantern is
normally supplied complete with a set of stainless steel mounting hardware for site installation
(6x dia.14mm holes on a 450mm PCD).
This intended WM-L780A Long Range LED lantern is an omnidirectional (360) light assembly,
for an effective range of 18nm @ T=0.74 (WHITE).

CONTROLLER MODULE
All versions of WM-L780A LED marine lantern is supplied with a main tier comprising the LED
controller board that manages the incoming supply, daylight control (photocell sensitivity),
current control (output intensities), lights operational status and the flash settings
(preprogrammed). The main controller module also performs self-checking and calibration
internally to ensure appropriate lights operation and will produce an alarm status, either visual
and/or audio and/or dry contact tap-off, during fault finding i.e., low incoming supply, etc.
The WM-L780A version could be configured to an effective light range of up to 20nm @
T=0.74. (please contact Wealth Marine for further details with your unique requirement and we
will respond with an unique solution).
The WM-L780A version is incorporating a photocell (daylight control), light failure indication
relay, along with optional GPS receiver module and output signal (in synchronision with lights
flashing characteristics).

FOCUSING (LENS OPTIC & LED ARRAYS)

Generally, the circumferential focusing with reference to the 702mm lens optic has been done at
factory level during factory acceptance test. The four(4) quadrants lens optic formed a 360
sector with each LED, on each LED array providing overlapped coverage of 120 between a pair
of LEDs. As such, supporting posts (4x) adjoining the four(4) quadrants will not cause an
obstruction or blockage to the light beam, when viewed from a distance. Replacement of LED
array(s) is also made easy with each boards mounted, multi-point supporting post. Re-focusing
is not required at site.

MOUNTING & LEVELLING

A set of stainless steel mounting bolts are normally supplied for each WM-L780A LED marine
lantern with a base of diameter 500mm, and 6x 14mm diameter holes orientated on a 450mm
PCD. Please refer to drawing no. WM-10171 for GA layout of WM-L780A LED lantern.

LED ARRAY AND ITS RATING (CONTINUOUS OPERATION)

WM-L780A LED marine lantern assembly equipped with 10-tiers LED arrays are rated at 280W
with an average of 28W for each LED array. The combined output intensities are rated to an
effective light range of 18nm @ T=0.74 (WHITE).
Note: The above light is recommended to have a flashing ON time of minimum 1.0s.

LIGHT FLASHING CHARACTERISTICS

The WM-L780A LED Marine Lantern being a completely sealed unit, is preprogrammed with up
to 256 field selectable flash codes. Changing the codes could be easily done by means of an
universal WM InfraRed handheld programmer (SYD-1 MASTER), which is normally supplied
with our lights. Upon request, special flash characteristics (that are not within our standard list)
could be incorporated at time of manufacturing.
Please refer to later pages on the flash setting procedures and our standard list of codes.

BATTERY SUPPLY
The input voltage range of WM-L780A is varies between 12~48VDC. This intended WML780A for DGLL India trial is a nominal 48VDC rated light unit. Any battery that is of the
correct voltage and adequate capacity may be utilised to power the WM-L780A LED marine
lantern. Enough cells should be connected in series to insure that the voltage under load will not
have fallen below 42V, the maximum being 52V. The voltage is regulated within the main
controller board located at every top-most tier of the WM-L780A LED marine lantern.
Optional input voltages could be incorporated upon request i.e. AC mains 120/240V, etc.

PROGRAMMING THE LIGHT CHARACTERISTICS

The Controller Module is preprogrammed with up to 256 field selectable flash codes for end-user
to program their WM-L780A LED lantern at site. Programming can be easily done via Wealth
Marines universal handheld InfraRed (IR) programmer SYD-1 MASTER. Please refer to the
step-by-step guide and operating procedures (later part of this manual) for programming the flash
codes. Special flash characteristics could be incorporated upon request.

ONE-WAY BREATHING VALVE

Water, dirt and dust are also potentially the causes for degradation of performance and
prematured failures to our LED lanterns. As navaids lightings are often exposed to varying
climate conditions that can impact the effectiveness of our LED lanterns. To prevent potential
damage from overpressure within the sealed housing of WM-series LED lantern, all lights are
fitted with a GORE protective vent that will equalised pressure and prevent condensation.
With the above prevention, it simplifies the maintenance at site because end-users need not have
to break the light seal and in-turn, achieving a longer and trouble-free service life (reduced stress
on the o-ring / rubber gasket.

OPTIONAL FEATURES
(A)
(B)
(C)
(D)

Built-in RS232 serial communication terminals for telemetry tap-off;

Built-in wired / wireless* (+GPS module) synchronisation ready;
Status Monitor PCB Relay dry contact
Programmable output intensities & photocell sensitivities (if required).

* Wireless Synchronisation is achieved by utilising an additional GPS receiver module that

mounts directly inside the light unit.
Verification in the case of non-synchronised situation between lights that comes with this
feature:There is an ON-BOARD indicator (red) that blinks every second during the search for
satellite signals. Once it is locked-on, this indicator will only blinks at the start of each duty
cycle. Please note that each new GPS receiver may takes up to 15 minutes for calculation of
positioning at present site.
** Status Monitor PCB is incorporated within a light unit (or externally housed in a
weatherproof enclosure) for failure indication via a relay dry contact (tap-off).
The Status Monitor PCB senses the current drawn and will triggers the relay contact
(normally opened) within a preprogrammed sensing period (typically 10 minutes).

PAINTING
All cast aluminium pieces are alodined, primed and coated with Dupont two component Corlar*
epoxy enamel. If a small area of the coating becomes chipped, complete repainting is not
necessary. Touch up should suffice.
* Registered Trademark of E.I. Dupont de Nemours and Company

CLEANING
All plastic optical parts should never be cleaned with strong chemicals or harsh detergents. A
solution of mild detergent in warm water, followed immediately by a clear water rinse would be
recommended. When painting, especially spray painting is being done in the vicinity, the lantern
should either be removed or protected by a cover so that solvent fumes or over spray from the
paint will not come into contact with the plastic surface. In the event that paint is deposited on
the optical surfaces, either cover or panel, kerosene is the best solvent to try first in removing the
paint if it is still wet. If this is unsuccessful, then one of the following may be helpful:

Hexane
Dry Cleaning Naphtha
Methanol

When paint has been removed, the remains of the solvent should be washed away with mild
detergent in warm water followed by a generous clear water rinse.
SOME OF THE CHEMICAL THAT MUST NOT BE USED:

Benzene
Acetone
Carbon Tetrachloride or Gasoline

The above solvents will seriously degrade the acrylic lens optic and/or cover materials, thus
affecting the performance of the LED lantern.

RUBBER GASKETS
The lantern housing has been sealed to IP68 and high-temp silicone rubber o-rings / gaskets are
essential to keep the intended status of ingression protection. Once the o-ring / rubber gaskets
have been exposed (lantern housing opened), it should always be kept dry. No adhesives, grease,
solvents or any other similar substances are required nor should they be used. Many such
substances will caused silicone to stretch or deteriorate and thus, affecting the intended
ingression protection. Alternatively, we suggest changing of the o-ring / rubber gaskets upon
each opening of the lantern housing (if required).
