Introduction:

The purpose of this lab was to explore the relationship between

work given to a horizontal coupled system and the increase in the
kinetic energy of that system.
Procedure:
1. Determine the mass of the cart using the Triple Beam Balance and record as m1 in
the data table.
2. Put the masses on the top of the cart.
3. Take 0. 020 kg from the top of the cart and place it at the end of the string.
4. Put the cart at its starting position and push the cart slightly.
5. Use the stopwatch to measure the time and record the displacement and time.
6. Remove the 0.020 kg from the string and replace it with 0.040kg. Put the 0.020 kg
back onto the cart.
7. Repeat procedures 4 to 6 with all 7 trials, each with a different mass.

Questions:
1. Plot a graph of Work Input vs. Kinetic Energy. As you have done
from previous labs, construct the best straight line from the data
you have.
2. Plot a graph of Kinetic Energy vs. Vf. As you have done from
previous labs, construct the best fit curve from the data you
have.
3. a) From graph A, what type of relationship exists between Work

Input and the Kinetic Energy of the coupled system?

Direct relationship
b) From graph B, what type of relationship exists between the
Kinetic Energy and the final velocity of the couple system?
Exponential relationship
4. If your kinetic energy is different from your work input,
thoroughly explain what caused this discrepancy.
Kinetic Energy is proportional to the square of final velocity,
some work have been lost due to friction.
5. Show that the unit of Work equals the units of Kinetic Energy.
W= F x d= kg m/s x m = kg (m/s)
KE= 1/2 mv = kg (m/s) = kg (m/s)
Conclusion:
This lab was very fun because it was a moving experiment that I like
to do. This experiment was easy because the steps used to explain
this was easy to understand. With the directions given it was an
easy lab but there were some percent errors because the stop watch
might have not stopped at the exact time and so the calculation
might not be accurate.
The purpose of this lab was to analyze the relationship between the
work given to a system and the increase in the kinetic energy of
that system and to calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction
between the cart and track. From my experiment I concluded that
the work done is just the variation or change in energy, therefore in
an ideal situation the work input would be equal to the change in
energy. However one must account for the force of resistance and
friction. Therefore in a real life situation the work input will be equal
the change in kinetic energy and the
So, basically we are just keep changing the mass of the cart to see
the relationship between work and kinetic energy
