HISTORY

Evans and Tate Wines is Australias most admired

Margaret River Wines and is currently under McWilliams
Wines.
In 1974, John Tate and John Evans find a suitable piece of
land having the right climate and soil on the banks of
Wilyabrup River. A year later, they planted vines and the
vineyard Redbrook was named after Tates Dachshund
(dog) in 1975. Few years down the line, the partnership
between Tate and Evans comes to an end.
Tate and his wife Toni take control of the winery in 1983.
Evans & Tate Classic Semillon Sauvignon Blanc was released
in 1987.
In coming years, the winery saw a spurt in demand from
6,000 cases in 1987 to 150,000 cases in 1994. In 1999, in
Margaret River, a new winery was started having a capacity
of 3,5000 barrels. To counter the rising demand of wines,
Evans & Tate continued to expand the business.
In the year 2000, Evans & Tate 1999 Margaret River Shiraz
surprised everyone by beating 4875 wines in the best red
wine category at 17th Annual International Wine Challenge
held in London and being the first Western Australian red
wine to do so.
Chief winemaker Matthew Byrne joined in 2001 and bringing
with him a rich experience of wine vintages spanning across
continents. Cellar door opened at Redbrook in 2002.
2007 witnessed the acquisition of Evans & Tate by
McWilliams family, a household name in Australian wine
business.

VINEYARDS / REGIONS

What makes Margaret river special is the maritime climate making the days cooler and night warmer and the welldrained gravel soil which resembles the famous wine region of France, Bordeaux, making it optimal for growing
vines.
Wines of this region are known for their characteristic flavors and unique feel. This wine region has a share of 20
percent of premium wine market of Australia. There are 6 sub-regions of Margaret river namely Carbunup,
