PROFILING

SOCIAL-ECONOMIC STATUS
Economic status is important when considering audience profiling, as it
helps the consumer target the content at specific groups of people that
will most likely like this.
It is the social science that studies how economic activity affects and is
shaped by social processes. It generally analyses how societies progress,
stagnate or regress because of their local or regional economy, or the
global economy around them
Example of this would be, a persons class in society based on how much
money they make

PSYCHOGRAPHIC
Psychographics is the study of values, personalities, opinions, attitudes,
interests and lifestyles. This area of research focuses on the attitudes,
interests and opinions, psychographic factors are also called IAO variables.
Very useful in marketing and opinion research, as they mostly get accurate
results from the data gathered.
Often combined with demographics, such as age and gender, to give and
gain more detailed views of the sample.
Examples of this would be social class, lifestyles and personality
characteristics.

GEODEMOGRAPHIC
Geodemographic is a statistical technique for trying to discover whether the
individuals of a population fall into different groups by making quantitate
comparisons of many different charcterstics with the assumption that the
differences within the group should be less than expected for the
audience.
Example that use geodemographic are, local retailers, to try and aim the
business at the local community and all the ages that are around this
area, to make the busiest shop possible for them.

AGE
Age profiling is where you make generalizations about someone or assume
they are involved in illegal activity based on there age
Age is vitally important in audience profiling, as it helps the consumer decide
who to aim there content at based on there age.
This is vitally important, as people who are in there teens would most likely
enjoy things different to someone in there 60s.
Age is importasnt to consider, as it can determine the success of the
programme from the target audience and content.
Example of this would be The Walking Dead which is aimed at more teens and
adults, to Downton Abbey, which is aimed at more elderly people due to the
content

GENDER
Gender can help determine the audience profiling also, as it helps
categorise certain characteristics
This helps as girls tend to usually like shows that boys may not, so the
different consumers try to aim the show at just one gender, rather than
trying to aim at both genders,
The example for this, would be Match of the Day, which is aimed at more
boys due to the content and the use of only male presenters. Whereas,
Pretty Little Liars is aimed more at girls through the content of using teen
girls as the main characters, which would most likely relate to the
audience.

SEXUAL ORIENTATION
Sometimes the consumer can try to aim there programmes at the LGBT
community, with the content having things they may relate to
Sexual orientation refers to a persons preference for certain behaviours.
Sexual identity is a very important component of a consumers self-concept
This can sometimes help the consumer to relate the content to what the
target audience would want, this can allow the show to become more
succesful.
An example of this is the shows that were on E4, which were aimed at the
LGBT community Banna, Cucumber and Tofu.

RACE OR ETHNICITY
Race or ethnicity can also cause audience profiling to arise, as many people
can like different programmes that may suit them better.
Sometimes, if the consumer know the majority of the audience isnt English
speaking they will use a different language or have Subtext to explain
what is happening.
If the person was from a specific area, the audience ,may want to watch it,
as thye would relate to it more, so they may find it more interesting to
watch.

MAINSTREAM/NICHE
Mainstream is where the content is aimed at a much wider audience, as they have
bigger viewing figures, and are usually more successful. Sometimes mainstream
shows can have a wider target audience range that is aimed at various ages and
both male and female, which makes it a more popular programme.
Niche is where they have much smaller audience, that most likely has a smaller
viewing count. They usually have a smaller target audience, that is mainly aimed at
just one specific group.
Examples of mainstream would be Once Upon a Time, which has a huge target
audience
Examples of niche would be Mad Dogs, which isnt very popular, and has a much
smaller target audience.
