Becoming a Multinational Corporation
Before becoming an MNC, a company may first sell its products or
services in a foreign country with limited risk by exporting or licensing
its products in that country. To expand in a foreign market, it may
manufacture its products there to save on shipping costs and foreign
tariffs. A company typically becomes a MNC when it makes a direct
investment in the foreign country to establish operations and conduct
business there, which gives the company more control over its business in
the country.
Multinational Strategies
A company can set up its operations in a foreign country from scratch by
establishing its own manufacturing, distribution and retail operations or
use several other strategies to build its foreign presence. It can establish a
joint venture or partnership with an established firm in a foreign country.
It can buy complete ownership or a controlling stake in an established
foreign company. A company that aims for a larger approach can form a
long-term global partnership with another company to invest in and
penetrate multiple foreign market

Very Large and Organizationally Complex
Multinationals are mostly large in size, publicly listed and
organizationally complex enterprises managed by professional executives
experienced in managing across borders. Annual sales and profits
frequently total billions of dollars. Employees can number in the
hundreds of thousands. Annual capital expenditures often exceed those
budgeted by many African, Asian and Middle East countries.
Home Countries
Most multinationals are based in the U.S., Western Europe or Japan.
Some leading exceptions include LG Electronics (South Korea), Hyundai
(South Korea), Tata (India), BHP (Australia), Companhia Vale do Rio
Doce (Brazil) and the Techint Group (Argentina).
Very few MNCs are based in Africa or the Middle East as of April 2011.
One exception is DP World, the global operator of marine ports, based in

A multinational corporation is often thought to be a giant business entity with
