Pick your money manager wisely

When you are seeking financial
advice, it’s worth taking your
time over it, writes Jessica Mead

A
S A nation, we are apparently more
likely to seek professional advice on
our hair, our gardens and our cars
than on our personal finances. Yet
with the growing number and complexity
of products on offer, it is becoming more
important for people to seek advice before
they take a decision – particularly if their
finances are already complicated enough.
There are some organisations such as
the Pensions Advisory Service and the
Consumer Financial Education Body,
which all provide financial help on a range
of products. But if your finances are more
complicated and you want advice on your
whole financial situation, then hiring an
independent financial adviser (IFA) can be
worthwhile.
But how do you go about finding one
that meets your needs? There are thou-
sands of IFAs registered in the UK, so look-
ing for one can be a daunting task. To
whittle it down, there are a number of
things you should consider.
First, seek personal recommendations.
These can be both a reassuring and a suc-

Dear Russell, has the abolition

A.
I think that the removal of Hips
has definitely been a positive thing
because people just don’t like put-
ting their hands in their pockets and pay-
ing for something up-front with no
guarantee of a sale.
Since they have been abolished, a lot of
sellers are able test the water and see what
interest there is in their property without
actually having to pay around £200 to get
the Hip completed.
Previously, an estate agent could not VITRA VEGETAL CHAIR IN
legally market a property until the Hip had BRICK RED £284, see
been set up. This put off sellers who want- www.vitra.com for stockists
ed to market their property quietly.
Now people don’t have to fully market
the property if they don’t want to and can
ask the estate agent to show round just a
few serious buyers and see what happens.
The estate agent also does not have to pro-
duce the full brochure now.
A lot of overseas sellers didn’t like paying
for HIPs upfront because they didn’t under-
stand the reasoning for it. Now that Hips GLOW COFFEE TABLE
are no longer required, they are keener to £149
sell their London properties.
Overall, their removal has freed up the www.dwell.co.uk
market and more vendors are inclined to
put their properties up for sale – there is
still a demand for good properties and
especially so in London.
This influx of properties also helps buyers
because they now have more to choose
from and can negotiate better whereas
before they didn’t have any choice.

A.
People have very short-term mem-

that the capital gains tax (CGT)
