Introduction

General
Switch disconnectors range
L-TRI 5
The switch disconnectors of the
range L-TRI 5 are proven flat chamber types to perform the various
switching functions in medium-voltage distribution systems. They are the
result of more than 50 years experience in development and manufacture of switch disconnectors by
ALSTOM (former Concordia Sprecher). The simple, low-maintenance
and highly economic indoor switch
disconnectors of the range L-TRI 5
have hundred-thousand-fold proved
to be good in practical system
operation.
The switch diconnectors of the
range L-TRI 5 are in accordance
with the norms DIN EN 60694
(VDE 0670 Part 1000), IEC 60694
and DIN EN 60265 (VDE 0670
Part 301), IEC 60265-1. Additionally, selected variants are in compliance with DIN EN 60420 (VDE
0670 Part 303), IEC 60420 or
CSA Standard CS22.2 No. 0
and 193.

Disconnector range TRI 5

Due to the integrated rapid

ON/OFF switching in the drive, the
disconnector has the same short-circuit making capacity than the switch
disconnector.
Disconnectors of the range TRI 5
are in compliance with the norms
DIN EN 60129 (VDE 0670 Part 2)
IEC 60129.
For technical data and dimensions
see the TRI 5 list.

Main application areas for

the range L-TRI 5
Switch disconnectors of the range
L-TRI 5 are used in indoor mediumvoltage switchgear systems. They
have a making capacity and are
suited to switch:

Design
The standard disconnector comprises the above 5 main components.
The welded frame from sectional
steel (1) bears the epoxy resin insulators (2), the main current paths (4)
and the arcing chamber (5).
The frame also bears the switch
shaft (3) with latching facility and
the catch springs. The ribbed push
rod with a very high creep resistance connects the switch shaft to
the main current path.

Torsion spring disconnector

(D-disconnector)
Torsion springs are integrated in the
switch shaft. Turning the shaft end
makes that the torsion springs
become pre-loaded so that energy
is stored. At the end of turning, a
cam plate drives the catch and
releases the stored energy. This
makes that the closing and opening
speed is independent of the operator. Thus, closing on a possibly
occurred short-circuit can be ensured. Also breaking of different currents is possible both in normal and
faulty system operation. In the end
position there is a reliable catch
through the stored energy drive. The
drive angle is 90.

Arcing chamber
The switch disconnectors L-TRI 5
employ the proved flat arcing chambers working on the hard-gas principle. The arc quenching facility is
shunted to the main current path
and includes a flat arcing chamber
and an arcing blade for each
phase.
Due to the optimized design and
the use of an improved quenching
medium both the dimensions could
be reduced and also the service life
was increased.
For switch disconnectors with
increased breaking capacity a
modified quenching system with
special arcing blades is available
as option.

Drive for KS disconnector

Arcing chamber

As for the D-type disconnector, also

this type consists of the main components (1) to (5). Additionally, the
elongated base frame bears epoxy
resin insulators with fuse carriers (6)
to accommodate HH fuses according to DIN 43625 and the functional device for fuse tripping (8).

For the drive type KS..

(rapid CLOSING, stored energy for
OPENING, rapid OPENING) lowmaintenance springs are used. Loading of the breaking springs occurs
automatically during the closing
action. After the rapid closing
action the opening energy remains
stored in the breaking spring. Opening may occur immediately after
closing by actuation of the switch
shaft (drive) or by tripping of a HH
fuse or by an attached breaking-current shunt release. The drive angle
is 90.

The switch disconnectors L-TRI 5

employ the proved flat arcing chambers working on the hard-gas principle. The arc quenching facility is
shunted to the main current path
and includes a flat arcing chamber
and an arcing blade for each
phase.
Due to the optimized design and
the use of an improved quenching
medium both the dimensions could

10

Switch disconnectors
L-TRI 5...-KS-AA
General
The switch disconnector L-TRI 5...KS-AA is a device with trip-free
release and rapid closing.
In principle, the drive works like
that of the transformer disconnector
-UH-KS-A (for this see drive of KS
switch). Opening may occur immediately after closing by actuation of
the switch shaft (drive) or by an
attached breaking-current shunt
release. Apart from the short-circuit
making capacity, the technical data
are the same as for the transformer
disconnector type UH-KS- A.
The type L-TRI 5...-KS-AA has a
reduced short-circuit making capacity Ima = 50 kA.
Design
The design of the disconnector type
KS-AA is similar to that of the type
UH-KS-A. However, it does not
include the additional row of 3
epoxy resin insulators with the fuse
carriers and the fuse tripping
device. Consequently, the disconnenctor base frame is correspondingly shorter compared with the
type UH-KS-A.

Switch disconnectors
L-TRI 5...-KS-AA

Transformer disconnector
L-TRI 5...-UH-D
General
In addition to the transformer disconnector L-TRI 5...-UH-KS-A also
the type L-TRI 5...-UH-D is available.
The differences are the following:
no HH fuse tripping
torsion spring actuation
(D-disconnector) (see under cable
disconnector L-TRI 5...-D).
Design
The design and the dimensions of
this variant correspond to those of
the type L-TRI 5...-UH-KS-A, however, without fuse tripping and latch
(see design of the type L-TRI 5...
-UH-KS-A).

Transformer disconnector
L-TRI 5...-UH-D
11

Transformer disconnector
L-TRI 5F...-UH-KS-A
The switch-disconnector-fuse combination type L-TRI 5F with all-pole
mechanical release for the striking
pin release of the HH fuse links
meets the specific test conditions
according to DIN EN 60420 (VDE
0670 Part 303), IEC 60420.
A prerequisite for the fulfilment of
the above norms is an improved
patent-pending arc quenching
system with arcing chamber and
sickle shaped arcing blade. Apart
from that, the type L-TRI 5F...-UHKS-A is equal to the standard transformer disconnector L-TRI 5...-UHKS-A.

Earthing switches mounted to switch

disconnectors improve the safety for
the operating staff and the operational reliability. The mounted earthing
switches have a defined high
making capacity and are equipped
with a rapid closing facility in form
of a rocker spring. The connection
between switch shaft and frame
forms a reliable transition resistance
so that an additional earthing strip
is not necessary. The purpose determines the type of the mounted earthing switch with making capacity at
the fixed- and/or moving-contact
side of the switch disconnector.

The earthing shaft (2) with the earth

blades (3) is born by the frame
elongation (1) and connected to the
disconnector frame. The earthing
contacts (5) are mounted to the
connecting brackets. Between earthing shaft (2) and disconnector
frame, the spring stack for rapid
closing (4) is attached.
Earthing switches may be mounted
on the:
fixed-contact side ET
moving-contact side EA
and also at both sides.

Rapid starting of the earth switch

drive is via the toggle spring action.
When operating the shaft the dead
point is exceeded after approx. 15
and the rapid closing activated. It is
possible to integrate a mechanical
interlock between the shafts of the
switch disconnector and the mounted earthing switch (VT and VA).It
prevents the closing of the opened
earthing switch as long as the
switch disconnector is CLOSED and
the closing of the opened switch disconnector with the earthing switch
closed.This mechanical interlock is
possible both in manual operation
of the switch disconnector and also
for the mounted earthing switch.

13

Mounted earthing switch

at transformer disconnector

Mounted earthing switch ET

There are three options for attachment of the earthing switch to the
transformer disconnector:
type ET at the fixed-contact side
type EU at the side of the outer
fuse contacts, externally mounted
(apart from 36 kV)
type EUI at the side of the outer
fuse contacts, internally mounted
(only possible for 24 and 36 kV).
Attachment combinations are possible between ET and EUI or ET and
EU. It is possible to realize mechanical interlocks between the shafts
of the switch disconnector and the
mounted earthing switch
(VT; VUI; VU).
The mechanical interlock prevents
the
closing of the opened earthing
switch with the switch disconnector in CLOSED position, and
closing of the opened switch
disconnector with the earthing
switch in CLOSED position.

If desired, a plug-in board can be
pushed into the opened switch vertically to the switch base frame
below the arcing chamber. It is not
part of the switch disconnector. Lateral deposition of the plug-in board
according to panel variant. Recommended board thickeness:
12 kV = 4 mm
17.5 kV = 6 mm
24 kV = 8 mm
36 kV = 10 mm

Fitting position, selection of driving side and shaft lengthes

Fitting position
In the case of cable disconnector
(type L-TRI 5...-D) having a rated
current of up to 630 A and a horizontally located switch shaft any
fitting position is possible (see
sketch). For the cable diconnectors
>= 1000 A and transformer disconnectors (type L-TRI 5...-UH-KS-A)
wall-mounting with the arcing chambers on top is standard. For deviating fitting positions please consult
us.

1) For a combination of 3 switching devices (1 switch disconnector and 2 mounted earthing switches) only two motor drives
are possible as a maximum. Referred to the device they are located opposite to each other.
2) The motor drive is only possible for the earthing switch at the moving-contact side (EA).

Selection of possible shaft lengthes

The selection of the available shaft lengthes depends on the rated voltage and the pole centre spacing.

Tests
The switch disconnectors have
proved their outstanding features
during type testing according to the
valid national and international
standards and comprehensive test
series in the development stage and
also in practical use.
The tests were carried out in own
high-performance test floors and by
independent testing institutions such
as FGH, IPH or KEMA for example.

They also include the use in type

tested switchgear. Additionally, the
reliability, operational safety and
mechanical function were tested
during long-time tests.
The technical data given in this
catalogue represent standardized
rated values. They are not the upper
limit values of the switch in any
case. If required, you can request
for them.

22

The switch disconnectors up to

630 A have to be classified as
multipurpose switch disconnectors
of the class E1 according to
IEC 60265-1.

Transformer disconnectors
according to
IEC 60420 type L-TRI 5F
The norm IEC 60420 is a supplementary regulation for "Transformer
disconnectors" and especially
applies to switch-disconnector-fuse
combinations with fuse release (type
L-TRI 5F...-UH-KS-A). The combination from switch disconnector and
fuse is considered to be one unit
and has to be tested correspondingly. As the norm also requires
the breaking of high fault currents
with unfavourable power factors
(cos ) the arc quenching system
was modified and improved without
renunciation of the proven concept
of the flat arcing chamber. The type
L-TRI 5F can be easily recognized
by the curved arcing blades (see
figure, page 12).
The type L-TRI 5F-UH-KS-A can be
used with operating voltages of
10/12kV up to a transformer
power of 1000 kVA, and with
operating voltages 20/24kV up to
a transformer power of 1250 kVA.
A fuse selection table assigns the
tested HH fuse links from different
manufacturers to the different rated
transformer powers and is to be
considered for engineering (see
selection table on pages 28/29).

Transformer disconnectors
according to
DIN EN 60265
Additionally, also switch-disconnector-fuse combinations according to
DIN EN 60265 (VDE 0670 Part
301), IEC 60265-1 are available,
which are suited for breaking
higher transformer powers.
With 12 kV up to a transformer
power of 1250 kVA.
With 24/36 kV up to a transformer power of 1600 kVA.

Climatic conditions
The design, components and tolerances for the switch disconnectors
are selected so that the devices can
be used without any restriction in
indoor conditions according to
IEC 60694 and IEC 60265 (DIN
EN 0670 Part 1000 and Part 301)
with increased values between
25C and +40C.

Low maintenance
In normal operational conditions
(so called EVU use) as specified in
valid regulations the switch disconnectors of the range L-TRI 5 are
virtually maintenance-free, that
means the time between two maintenance procedures is approximately 15 years under normal
climatic conditions.
An inspection is recommended after
1500 switching cycles or after
serious short-circuit stresses.
In practical system operation it is
not needed to replace any parts. In
the case that the allowed number of
breaking operations has been actually reached it is possible to easily
replace the arc quenching facility.

Quality
The achieved steady high quality
standard of our products is ensured
by the quality assurance management according to DIN ISO 9001
introduced in 1993.

Economy
When it comes to procurement cost
we recommend to consider the
advantageous economic effects of
the product range L-TRI 5 including
accessories in terms of quality,
operational and functional
reliability, availability and low
maintenance expenses.
