Writing From My Rocker

Just as no two people are alike,

we believe no two services are alike.

By Hazel Goodrich
The birds were pecking at the seed
and the ice in the birdbath in
disbelief. I was a little amazed myself.
We had been warned about the
impending cold wave but we tend not to believe
everything the weatherman says. However, he was
right-on this time. There was snow and ice
everywhere. Schools and roads were closed. Special
events cancelled, even our church cancelled. A real
taste of what you, my friends, expect in the
winter.
It gave me a moment of uncertainty about moving
back that way, but only a moment. It did cause me
to compare life in some ways to how we react to
warnings. They are everywhereon pill bottles,
laundry detergents, cleaning products, clothing, etc.
I wonder how many people actually read them. How
many actually heed the warnings?
We tend to be a nation that is too busy to pay
attention to a lot of the warnings, and yet we fund
studies to prove or disprove the validity of them. It
is a complex thing, but maybe we ought to start
paying some attention to the warning signs and
prevent some of the sad side effects of being too
busy. Maybe that is what our country needs, too
a closer look at the warning signs.

We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.
One disadvantage of having nothing to do, you
cant stop and rest. With all the things you have to do
tomorrow, itll be the busiest time of the year.
There may be luck in getting a job, but theres no luck in
keeping it.

In 1966, the World Cup was being

held in England which, to the English,
was kind of a big deal. Maybe the
reason they were taking it so
seriously was because they had a
feeling they might winwhich they
didso you can imagine how
bummed they were when the World
Cup was stolen just four months
before the matches started. There
was a frenzy to find the cup and
avoid international embarrassment,
and it was eventually found by a
plucky collie named Pickles.

SURPRISING FOODS THAT

CAN POISON PETS
Info from AARP

Macadamia nuts
People love macadamia nuts for
snacking or in baked goods or
candy, but the nuts can be toxic
for dogs. According to the
review, its unclear how much a
dog needs to eat to get sick, but
some studies indicate that as
little as a quarter of an ounce
for every 2.2 pounds a dog
weighs is enough to result in
poisoning.
No deaths have been reported
to date, and most dogs
recovered within 24 to 48 hours
with veterinary care, the
analysis found, but pet owners
should take care to keep these
nuts (or cookies that contain
them) away from their pooches.

In the aftermath of Pickles finding

the Cup, his rise to fame can only
be described as meteoric. He was
lavished with attention from the
press as the hero dog whod
saved the nation from
international embarrassment.
Pickles even attended a banquet
in his honor, where he was given
a bone and a check for 1,000
archive footage shows the check
being shoved into his face, so we
hope it was cashed by his master
and not chewed to shreds.
He later went on to star in several
TV shows and even the movies.

FIRST NATION
Indigenous People of the land
who never became citizens

Cultural accommodations between Indians and whites

emerged over significant areas of North America in the
18th century. Part of the process that created it was in the
fur trade and other forms of accommodation. It arose
because Indians and Europeans, each being confident in
the rightness of their ways, had to deal with people who
did not share their values or their assumptions on the
appropriate ways to accomplish necessary tasks.
Middle ground rose because neither side could do
without the other. Neither side could make their
opposites conform, but they needed each other. People
had to find a means to gain cooperation between
opposing cultures, other than force. For this to succeed,
people had to attempt to understand the world and the
reasoning of others, and then assimilate that reasoning
to put it to their own purposes. People sought out
agreements between cultures. They had to be accepted
by both sides, who then built on them to create new
ways of doing things.

U.S. NATIONAL PARKS - CELEBRATING 100 YEARS

CHANNEL
ISLANDS
NATIONAL
PARK

FEATURED LIGHTHOUSE

Located on Falkner
Island, which is off
Guilford Harbor on
Long Island Sound in
Connecticut
Constructed in 1802
and commissioned by
President Thomas Jefferson, the lighthouse has had three
keeper's houses: the original house of 1802 was rebuilt in
1851 and then again in 1871. The 1871 keeper's house
survived to 1976, when it was destroyed by fire; the Coast
Guard repaired and automated the lighthouse two years later.
A volunteer group, the Faulkner's Light Brigade, has
undertaken the restoration and preservation of the lighthouse
since 1991, completing the last major restoration work in
March 2011. Access to Falkner Island and the light is
restricted during the nesting season of the roseate terns from
May to August yearly. The Falkner Island Lighthouse, as the
second oldest extant lighthouse in Connecticut, is listed on
the National Register of Historic Places.

SANDHILL CRANES
Sandhill cranes have been around for a
very long time. The earliest crane fossil is
about 2.5 million years old. These
majestic birds rely on open freshwater
wetlands to survive. But rapid habitat loss is threatening these
treasured birds. The Disney Wilderness Preserve in Florida is
home to more than 1,000 species of plants and animals,
including the sandhill crane.

CLOUDED LEOPARD
The clouded leopard is one of the most
charismatic and least understood of Asias
many beautiful cat species. Little is known
about the behavior or status of these shy
and elusive cats in the wild. Relative to body
size, clouded leopards long canines are the
largest of all living cats teeth. Large paws
with long, sharp claws help clouded leopards climb trees.
Their grip is so firm that the leopards can even hang upside
down from tree branches. Scientists have had difficulty
breeding clouded leopards because of male-female
aggressions. It has been shown that raising males and
females together from a very young age greatly reduces the
chances of aggression.

In the Pacific
Ocean, off the
coast of California
Channel Islands National Park consists of five of the
eight Channel Islands. Although the islands are close to the
shore of densely populated Southern California, their isolation
has left them relatively undeveloped. The park covers 249,561
acres of which 79,019 acres are owned by the federal
government. The Nature Conservancy owns and manages 76%
of Santa Cruz Island, the largest island in the park.
Channel Islands National Park is home to a wide variety of
significant natural and cultural resources. It was designated
a U.S. National Monument on April 26, 1938, and a National
Biosphere Reserve in 1976. It was promoted to a National Park
on March 5, 1980. Channel Islands National Marine
Sanctuary encompasses the waters six nautical miles around
Channel Islands National Park.
Oil spill
On January 28, 1969 an oil rig belonging to Union Oil
experienced a blow-out 6 miles off the coast of California. The
resulting spill was, at the time, the largest oil spill to occur in
United States territorial waters. Crews took about 11 days to
seal the rupture using a cement plug, and approximately
200,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the Pacific Ocean,
creating an oil slick of about 800 square miles. Following the
spill, tides carried the oil onto the beaches of the Anacapa, San
Miguel, Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz islands. It had a large
impact on native wildlife of the Channel Islands. Much of the
islands' seabird population was affected, with over an estimated
3,600 avians killed. Meanwhile, seals, dolphins and other sea
life died and washed ashore on both the islands and the
mainland. This spill contributed to the formation of the
Environmental Protection Agency.

This spiral galaxy appears woolly
because of how stars shine
through its dusty clouds. Though
it seems incredibly close in this

million light-years away in the
constellation of Leo, and it was discovered in 1784 by William
Herschel. Hubble released this incredibly detailed picture in
2015, though if you were to look at it with an ordinary backyard
telescope, it would appear like a giant bubble.

Valentine''s DayMemories
STILL SINGING HiS PRAISES
By Lulu M. Kincannon, 89, Laguna Woods
In 1941, Valentine's Day became the most important day of my
life because my husband proposed to me. I was 19 years old,
and Tom was 20 and just going into the Navy Air Corps.
We married in 1943, just before he left for the Pacific during the
war. We had four children, three girls and a son. We were
married for 68 years; he passed away on June 16, 2011.

2007 State Route 26 Endicott, NY

As I think back on our marriage, I think of all the wonderful and

considerate things he did to prepare and make a good
marriage. He even took a pre-marriage class in college. While
in the Navy, he applied for all he could to be sure the family
would be well cared for if anything happened to him.
As I think back on our marriage, I think of all the wonderful and
considerate things he did to prepare and make a good
marriage. He even took a pre-marriage class in college. While
in the Navy, he applied for all he could to be sure the family
would be well cared for if anything happened to him.
Each day I miss my husband so much, and each night as I lay
down to sleep, I sing this song to him:
Good night my love.
The tired old moon is descending.
Our time together is ending.
It was so heavenly,
holding you close to me.
It will be heavenly to hold you
again in my dreams.
Sleep tight my love, good night my love.
Remember that you're mine, all mine.
This is my gift: remembering all the love and caring he put into
our marriage and family.
Happy Valentines Day forever, Tom, my love.

THE LAST VALENTINE

By Mary A. Ale, Santa Ana
Several days ago I rummaged through my jewelry box. The
action evoked a ton of memories. The bejeweled necklaces,
lovely rings, bracelets, earrings all Valentine's Day gifts
from my husband Ernest throughout our 48 years together.
All accompanied with cards that were the best Hallmark
produced and thank God for that. Ernest was born and
raised in Argentina, and just like Desi Arnaz, he fractured the
English language.
I enjoyed the beauty of the jewelry and the many perfume
vials but they are only material possessions. I then raised
my eyes to view the most cherished of all Ernest's valentine
February 2017

gifts. Hanging on our bedroom wall. His last valentine gift to me.
It was Valentine's Day 2003. I drove into our garage after
attending my exercise class. I viewed hanging on the garage
wall, in front of my car, what appeared to be the Styrofoam cover
of a cooler. As I gazed closer, I noted that a heart was drawn on
the Styrofoam in a red pen with the words "Happy Valentine - I
love you forever - Me."
I removed the cover from the wall and quickly entered the dining
room where Ernest was seated next to his walker. I smilingly
questioned him, "This is what I get for Valentine's Day?" With his
usual impish grin, he lifted both his hands toward me, palms up,
and said, "It's the best I can do, for I am your prisoner."

THE LAST VALENTINE

NO CASE OF COLD FEET

continued from previous page

By Cindy Peck, 61, Laguna Niguel

Indeed he was! For the last five years Ernest had battled
cancer and the "monster" had left him seriously debilitated
totally dependent on me. Seven months later, Ernest
passed away.

One of the sweetest memories I have to this day happened over

30 years ago. My boyfriend Gary and I went to the movies one
night. I was wearing sandals, and my feet got very cold while
watching the movie. All of a sudden, and without saying a word,
he took off his tennis shoes and socks, took my sandals off and
put his socks on my feet and then put his tennis shoes back on.

A few months after Ernest left this life, my youngest son,

then age 36, was organizing the content of the garage and
barreled into my kitchen waving the Styrofoam cover
demanding, "Hey Mom, what do you want to do with this?
It was in the garage!" I turned and gasped for I had
forgotten about "my last Valentine."
I held it close and it suddenly became the most valuable
Valentine I have ever had. The cover now hangs
on my bedroom wall, reminding me each morning,
upon my awakening, of Kahlil Gibran's words from
"The Prophet" "You give but little when you give
of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself
that you truly give."

Needless to say, I fell in love with him at that very moment. We

now have been married for 33 years and he's just as sweet, kind
and affectionate as three decades ago. He's the love of my life
and the beat of my heart.

Expressions of Love
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from
where. I love you straightforwardly, without
complexities or pride; so I love you because I know
no other way than this: where I does not exist nor
you, so close that your hand on my chest is my
hand, so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.
~ Pablo Neruda, Love Sonnet XVII
Young love is a flame; very pretty, often very hot
and fierce, but still only light and flickering. The
love of the older and disciplined heart is as coals,
deep-burning, unquenchable.

Hepatitis C is a serious, blood-borne disease that has

been under the radar. Though it affects millions, many
people dont know about it. People live with it for years
with no symptoms, while it slowly damages their liver.
By the time symptoms appear, liver damage is often
advanced. Left untreated, Hep C can cause liver
damage, liver cancer, and even death.
It is not known for sure why Baby Boomers are at
higher risk. The Hep C virus was only discovered in
1989, so many Boomers were most likely infected
before that time and may only be showing symptoms
now. Donated blood was not even
screened for Hep C until 1992.
Many Boomers were infected in the
70s and 80s when infection control
standards were not what they are today.

HEALING FOODS FROM THE BIBLE (Part 3)
Rosemary
Rosemary is revered in Spain as one of the bushes that gave shelter
to the Virgin Mary in the flight into Egypt. In 1235, Queen Elizabeth of
Hungary fell in love with it when she was age 72, crippled with
rheumatism and gout. Rosemary was soaked in wine for four days and
applied to her legs. It cured her and gave her back her youth to such
an extent that the king of Poland asked her to marry him.
Rosemary contains six chemical compounds known to fight cataracts.
Rosemary wine is said to quiet palpitations of the heart and relieve
swelling or edema of the limbs. It is employed externally for its effect in
stimulating the hair bulbs to renewed activity to prevent baldness.
Rosemary also has a long history as a memory-enhancing herb. It
contains compounds that prevent the loss of a chemical (acetylcholine)
vital to thinking and reasoning. It is good for memory!

skin toner

What's standing between you and unclogged pores might be just

adding one product into your beauty routine, toner. Use a gentle,
soothing toner to remove oil and traces of dirt and grime. Toners are
most helpful for people with oily or acne-prone skin, or for people who
want extra cleansing after wearing makeup or other skin products like
sun screen.
Toner benefits:
1. It shrinks pores.
2. It gives your skin pH balance.
3. It adds a layer of protection.
4. It moisturizes.
5. It refreshes skin.
6. It can prevent ingrown hairs.

Hep C is a virus that can be transmitted

by very small amounts of blood, not
even visible to the naked eye. It can live
outside the body for up to three weeks, so even a small
amount of contaminated blood going unnoticed can
cause an infection.
A few common examples of ways that people can get
Hep C are:
organ donations or blood products before 1992.
unsterilized tools at tattoo parlors.
sharing personal items that have infected blood.
past recreational drug use, like sharing cocaine
straws or intravenous needles.
Hep C is curable, though. Scientific advances have
made todays treatments shorter and more effective.
Average cure rates are around 95% with an average
length of treatment of 12 weeks. In the past few years,
more people have been treated and cured than in the
previous decade. You are considered cured when a lab
test done three months after youve completed
treatment does not find any Hep C virus in your blood.
Hep C testing is not currently part of routine blood
work, so you will have to ask for it specifically. It is a
simple blood test, and most health insurance plans
cover one-time Hep C testing for Baby Boomers.
Medicaid and Medicare programs cover it, too.

The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.

NUTRITIVE SWEETENER FACTS

Corn Syrup: liquid form of corn sugar. When crystallized,
may be called corn syrup solids or corn sweeteners.
Corn Sugar: sugar from the breakdown process of
cornstarch.
Maple Syrup: syrup made from the sap of the sugar
maple tree.
Honey: contains mostly fructose; comes from the floral
sources from which the bees collect nectar.

You can substantially reduce your risk of having a stroke

if youre eating a good diet, exercising and managing
your hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. It is
recommended that keeping your blood pressure in a
range of less than 140/90 is ideal. Exercise for an hour,
five times a week. Make sure it is a decent level of
activity to get your heart pumping. Having one glass of
red wine (at most) a day is also helpful.
February 2017

Brushing and flossing every day is also important. People

with poor oral health are at a higher risk for both heart
attack and stroke.

Shanghai Adventures

(Part 10)

By Joan Fudala
NOTE: Shanghai Adventures is the diary
of Joan Fudala of Longview, TX (daughter
of Karl Tiemann of Owego, NY). She was
officially a tourist while her husband Carl was on a business trip
in Shanghai. Her diary covers the period of October 15th
through November 1st, 2015.
10/23/2015
I woke up about 5:30, feeling much better. Roman had to leave
earlier this morning to go back to Ukraine, so it was just me and
Carl at the breakfast buffet. Another traditional American meal
with eggs, bacon, and zucchini bread. I walked with Carl to the
subway station and todays surprise sight was a large brown and
white rabbit sitting under a bush right in front of the subway
entrance. Since nothing opens up until at least 9:30, I went to
the gym. I decided to be a typical tourist and went to Madame
Toussaints Wax Museum. Unfortunately, the time and money
spent were pretty much wasted on me. First, I did not recognize
any of the Chinese celebrities and I wasnt very familiar with any
of the others, either. Sylvester Stallone, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis
Presley, Presidents Clinton and Obama, and Prince William
were a few I did recognize. Most of the figures had elaborate
background scenes with the intention of someone else taking
your picture with the celebrity. I did try to take some selfies and
had a couple of people volunteer to take my picture with my
phone. The best part was at the end; there was a ten-minute 4D
short featuring the characters from the movie Ice Age called No
Time for Nuts. The premise is that the squirrel finds a time
machine and gets transported back and forth through time into
different situations. In the opening sequence, snow fell from the
ceiling and the seats shook during an earthquake. This caused
the acorn to roll away from the squirrel down the mountain in a
series of twists and turns that had me giggling out loud like I do
when I go around in circles.
By the time I finished there, I was getting hungry. My afternoon
goal was to locate and visit the French Concession. I headed in
that general direction and kept my eyes open for something to
eat. I found a place where there were a lot of people eating, and
I ventured inside. The menu was entirely in Chinese; I just
pointed to something that looked good and hoped for the best. I
got a good-sized platter with chicken in a savory sauce, steamed
vegetables, and something that resembled pulled pork, all over a
bed of rice. The meal also came with a small bowl of green
string vegetables and a soup with a tofu-like consistency.
On my walk, I saw some interesting looking buildings. I found
the City of God Temple of Shanghai and paid 10 yuan to enter.
There were dozens of large statues of various gods behind glass
on both sides of a long hallway. There were stones carved into
dragons and a huge incense burner that was very ornate. I saw
a ceremonial gong and several altars where people were

kneeling, bowing and praying. I wish I could have gotten a

better picture of the ornamental lanterns hanging from rafters
in the ceiling in the Hall of the God of Wealth. There was a
huge bronze bell and I saw a person carefully place a coin on
one of the designs in the bell and realized that many others
had done the same.
On a stone wall near the entrance, there were some
intricately carved inserts of flowers, scenes, and animals.
The temple (over 100 years old) is sandwiched between two
other more modern buildings, both built in a similar style to
look like the ancient temple.

A MOST GLORIOUS SOUND

By Junkyard Smith

Anyone who has ever done the cleaning in a

commercial kitchen such as in a large business or school
cafeteria is familiar with the wheeled conveyance for clean
dishes called The Lowerator.
I wont reveal my workplace at the time, but I was assigned
to The Spoon at one point, and protests to the Union were
futile. A coworker took me aside and said hed show me how
to do it up to and exceeding expectations, and Id never fail
inspection. He was right.
Then overconfidence got to me. I was wheeling the above
Lowerator out the main door into the hallway. To my horror,
one wheel got caught in the floor-lock and the whole thing
went down, spilling about 300 cheaply made china dishes to
the tile, breaking every single one! Now, anyone who has
ever played the drums knows that there is no sound like the
crash of an Avedis Zildjian cymbal, especially an old one.
Theres no question about it. The sound of so many cheap
dishes shattering in a hallway is actually superior, and Im
glad I heard such a glorious sound. Not everyone is blessed
enough to hear that and get away with it. Cleaning up the
mess took time, and I didnt dare call for help or Id be
responsible for replacing what Id broken. I was so far in debt
at that point, I couldnt keep up with the rent, heat, car
insurance, or buy food and pay child support, never mind add
this new bill, so I worked feverishly and got it all in the
dumpster without anyone knowing about it by the time it was
time to clock out.
The next night my boss asked if I knew anything about 300
missing plates. Naturally, I denied any knowledge of it, but I
was always more careful after that.
Still, it WAS a Most Glorious Sound!

A CHILDS POETRY
By Tamar Shapiro-Tamir
A child does not know
words like philosophy and chorale
A child does not pause to differentiate
(another word a child doesnt know)
between nice and fantastic
A child does not worry
about rhythm or rhyme
A child does not fear
that their words are silly or clich
(yet another word a child doesnt know)
A child says things
just as they see them
and because of this
everything a child says
is a poem

SNOW
By Anne O. Stout

Standing in the woods,

A hush fills the air
As they flutter down
DECLUTTER CLASS INSIGHT
Slow, dainty at first
Re. Clutter of what I lived and did
Perfect crystal rainbows
By Hal Fischbeck
No two alike
A tongue darts out
Life is not lived on paper
To catch the cold spot
Yet, papers give a clue.
Lasting only a brief second
As I downsize and declutter
A cold wind swirls them
Throw it away I gotta do.
Blinding twister of flakes
Tracks left as walking
Just relive it and then chuck it
Yet
soon they will be gone
Tho no one now can know
A
clean white blanket
Of all the years Ive lived
Settles
on
everything, everywhere
And all Ive done to show.
Leaving a new, clean vision
Children frolic and swirl
With inner ear from yesteryear
Swooshing downhill
I now understand my mother say,
Cheering at the missed school
Who cares anyway
Falling harder now
With each memento thrown away.
Blurring all that you can see
Yet quietly, silently
And now I sense with clarity
Transforming
the world
When I go, so do these.
Its
magic
from
above
The dumpster hauls whats then unknown
Shaken
from
angels
wings
Only passed DNA and memories are me.
Causing the world to sparkle.
But maybe Im too cynical
Im more than what Ive saved.
Its in my giving and my doing
That perhaps this worlds a better place.
And oft the things that mean the most
Are not on paper writ
But just my words and kindnesses
Bring remembrances of me,
Just being me.

CHOICES
By Anita Alkinburg Shipway
When we all wore
flannel night gowns,
I discovered a
"satin nighty" for
sale in the City.
It met the local needs with
an inner layer of flannel.
I bought three for my dearest friends.
After Christmas,
sales let me
buy one for me.
I chose the very most fancy one there was.
The neck and shoulders
were made of open lace.
Too late I realized
that the only part
of me
not under all the blankets,
was covered only in
air and lace.
This year
I see
someone
is selling an electric bed jacket.
They could have been sold together.
