Arts, Culture And Heritage

Grants Now Available

Columbia Basin Artists in all disciplines as well as

arts, culture and heritage organizations are invited to
apply for funding through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), which delivers the Arts, Culture
and Heritage Program on behalf of Columbia Basin Trust.
This year will be the nineteenth time the Columbia
Basin Trust has given the Columbia Kootenay Cultural
Alliance the annual responsibility for finding and funding arts and heritage projects from across the Basin and
providing opportunities for people involved in these areas
to embark on new projects, improve their skills, share
their talents and more. The response we get from Basin
residents and organizations regularly highlights for us the
importance of this program to recipients.
For 2017/18, CKCA is receiving $751,000 from the
Trust. Funding is available for: Individuals and groups
through community arts councils; Minor capital projects;
Touring; Arts and heritage mentoring/master classes;
Organizational development; Major projects; Artists in
education; Major exhibitions; Major heritage capital projects and New heritage projects. Applications are adjudicated once a year by local arts councils and the CKCA
Steering Committee.

Native Plants For A

Changing Climate

Join Dr. Richard Hebda for a lively discussion about climate change in the Columbia Basin and how native plants
are both threatened by these changes and provide opportunities that can help us adapt. Hosted by the Kootenay
Native Plant Society at the United Church Hall, 602 Silica
Street in Nelson at 6:30 pm, on Wednesday, February 1.
Climate change is here and plant communities are
designed to adapt; native plants offer solutions for preparing for an uncertain future says Dr. Hebda. In his presentation, titled Restoring the Future: Native Plants for a Changing
Climate, Dr. Hebda will explore the many changes that our
happening in our local landscapes. How will our native plant
species, their plant communities and our relationships to
them change in response? What can we do to preserve native
plant biodiversity and work with it to foster new landscapes
rooted in the rich legacy of the past? How can we involve our
native species to adapt to climate change?
As the curator for Botany and Earth History for the Royal
British Columbia Museum, Dr. Hebda is an expert on a
number of environmental topics including the climate history of BC, restoration of natural systems, ethnobotany of
BC First Nations, and plant ecology. The Kootenay Native
Plant Society proudly hosts Dr. Hebdas presentation
with sponsorship from Kootenay Conservation Program
and Columbia Power. Kootenay Native Plant Society is a
non-profit community organization whose mission is to
promote knowledge, appreciation, conservation and restoration of West Kootenay native plants and natural habitats
through education, research, and on-the-ground activities.
Tickets are $10/person ($5/students, low income) available at the door and in advance at Ellisons Market and Otter
Books (Nelson), Bay Avenue Music (Trail) and Crumbs

Sol Butler, on the hill.

Local Skiers Invited To Junior

Freeride World Championships

On February 5, the ski resort of Grandvalira, Andorra,

a small country between Spain and France, will welcome
over 60 youth riders aged 15 18 for the most prestigious
junior championship event in the sport of freeride. The
earthshaking level of talent that made last years event
unforgettable, will once again face off in the Pyrenean
epicenter of freeride.
Young skiers and snowboarders have earned their invitation to this championship by their past overall rankings in Freeride Junior events and will represent over
15 nations hailing from Europe, North America and
Oceania.

Whitewater skiers Sol Butler and Sam Howard are two

of four Canadians invited to the event based on last years
competition results. The high level of coaching through
Whitewaters Freeride Team has produced athletes that
have been dominating the North American competitions
in recent years.
Freeride is not a race, but a judged event where the competitors choose their own line down a defined extreme
slope. Judges rate them on line choice, control, fluidity,
style and energy.
Sol Butler began skiing at Whitewater at 2 1/2 years
of age and like many local kids began throwing backflips when he was nine years old and then a double
backflip when he was twelve. The terrain at Whitewater is such that youngsters can only ski Little Mucker so
many times and they start saying, I wonder whats down
in that gully?
One of Whitewater Freeride Team coaches, Dano Slater,
has achieved excellent results coaching at the World
Championships in previous years. Sol and Sam are currently raising money to allow Dano to attend the competition again this year. They have created a GoFundMe
page. Please visit the GoFundMe page and type Sol Butler
in the search bar. Or, call Sol (or his parents) at 250-3592919 for more information.
What an incredible opportunity for our young athletes to wave the flag of Nelson and Whitewater on the
world stage.

Coldsmoke Powder Festival

Presenting the 11th annual Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Festival on February 24 26. Join us for the first time,
the eleventh or some number in between... dream in the
colour powder.
Placed perfectly at Whitewater Ski Resort, this event is at
the powder mecca of the Kootenays and just a hop to the
city hub of Nelson. Punctuated with world-renowned snow
and a breathtaking backdrop, Whitewater Ski Resorts terrain combined with the Selkirks legendary snow, provide
fantastic opportunities for all levels to ski, learn, share,
compete and celebrate on-area and backcountry pursuits.
The Festival was originally created to provide a grassroots gathering where mountain enthusiasts of all levels
can celebrate Kootenay mountain culture and general
stoke for all forms of powder play. We still hold true to this
mission and it is this very basic tenant that is the backbone
for the success of this amazing three day event.
In addition to seasoned mountain veterans, Coldsmoke
will please snow enthusiasts of all disciplines and ability
level. Come and dream with us in the colour powder...
as a film festival enthusiast, on the dance floor competing for schwag, on an incredible backcountry tour with a
CMCG guide, on a clinic with some of the industrys best
coaches, hucking in one of the contests, racing randonnee
on a punishing course, or frying an egg in the Backcountry
Olympics.
Register online, by phone or in the office at 602
Lake Street in Nelson. Any inquiries please email us at
