Types and Uses of K-12 Standardized Assessments (A)

Standardized assessments are used many different purposes both educational and
financial, some test will determine the future of the students education while others will have no
effect on the students academic live. There are test that are administer to determine school
funding and have no impact on the student themselves, they may never receive the score
obtained. The assessments range from measuring English Levels to specific exams that are only
used to determine placement within the army. I will go into more detailed on the types of tests as
I list them below, I have also attached a Calendar that is attached to end of this document. This
calendar is posted in the school website and list all major standardize tests dates for Rancho High
School in which we could see at around 30 testing dates (Rancho Testing Calendar 2016-2017).
Use of Standardized Assessment Attributes and Findings to Enhance Instruction (B)
We live in an educational system in which students are forced to take several
standardized testing each year, although most of them will never affect the students academic
future. Formal ways of gathering and assessing student knowledge and skill prior to learning
include pre-tests, standardized test, and many other formal assessments (Rutherford, 2009), this
information must be use and included to differentiate instruction. We as instructors have a duty to
utilize all the available resources which includes all standardized test results that are found online
in the students records. Some of the most useful information comes from WIDA tests which are
standardized exams use to determine the level of all English Language Learners. They range
from levels 1-6 where level 1 is a student that has just enter the country and does not understand
anything and level 6 is a student who has become just as proficient as their peers. Understanding
the students WIDA level will allow the instructor to differentiate learning in order to maximize
the students chances at understanding.

Standardized Assessments in Mathematics (C)

Standardized assessments are commonly seen in Rancho High School, especially when in
the fields of Mathematics which is one of the core subjects needed to graduate. The District has
just recently switched from the High School Proficiency Exams to individual End of Course
Exam (EOCs) designed to ensure that all students who take a course have achieve a satisfactory
score across the state. Thus standardizing education between all schools and districts. The
average High School Student must pass a total of 2 Mathematics End of Course Exams
throughout their High School career. One in Algebra I and the other being Geometry. The
combination of the 2 End of Course Exams will replace the math portion of the Proficiency
Exam. Besides these standardize tests, students will also encounter math testing within several
sub categories of other tests which are mandated by the District. These test include the PSAT,
SAT, ACT, and ASVAB which all have portions of Mathematics within the test. These tests are
design to prepare students for life after High School such as College or Military.
Standardized Assessments in Rancho High School (D)
Rancho High School in general has a wide variety of standardized assessments that range
from remediation to college level tests, please refer to the testing calendar for a complete list of
the standardize tests given to our students. Within Rancho High School, 1 out of every 5 students
is categorized as an English Language Learner (Rancho HS 2014 Accountability Report). Due to
the high levels of Spanish Speaking students in our school, WIDA testing is given to all ELL
students on an annual basis in order to monitor the progress of the students in achieving literacy
of the English Language. Students are also encourage (Magnet Students are required) to take
several AP test, which allows the student to earn college level credits for certain High School
Classes. Other tests include High School Proficiency Exams that are still require for all seniors to

graduate. Nevada Alternate Assessment ( NAA) which is a standardize test given to students with
Individualized Education Plan or are consider to be English Language Learner in order to satisfy
their accommodations while still measuring their level of understanding. All juniors and lower
must take the other two End of Course Exams that include English I and English II.
Dangers of Standardized Assessments (E)
Students in todays educational system are exposed to a record number of
standardized assessments that students have to take. They have started to lose interest in all tests
and this is seen within the classroom. It is a tragedy, students have decreased their studying times
and are less likely to make up missing tests. They know that most tests are not important and
they have develop a dangerous mind set. Standardized assessment compares students scores to
the average score and each test will have their own grading criteria. This creates a lot of
competition between test takers that leads many to feel overwhelm and not try their best.
Standardized assessments have a lot of benefits by providing instructors with crucial information
about specific topics, however if overused they may create more harm than good.
Practicing Assessments Skills
After reading about standardized assessments I have learned a great deal and have
become interested in the application it has within my own Geometry class. I do not want to
overwhelm students by given them another traditional tests so I have chosen to create cloze test.
Cloze results are much different that your traditional ones, a good score is much lower than one
that would be considered good on more traditional tests (McKenna, pg. 46, 2014). The book
describes the three categories of scores which include Independent level 60 percent or higher,
Instructional level 40 to 59 percent, Frustration level 39 percent or lower (McKenna, pg. 46,
2014). I have taken this into consideration and have develop the grading scale found in this

Reynoso

document. The cloze test would test the students ability to analyze the selection given and use
content and terminology to arrive at the answer. Which is exactly the skill set which I want my
students to perform in this chapter, which is one of the reasons I have chosen this assessment.
