Uruk Engineering & Contracting Company (LLC)

Uruk Engineering & Contracting specializes in Iraqs energy sector. It Completed the
countrys first Fast Track project according to plan; and its Environment, Health &
Safety (EHS) includes over 6 million man-hours logged in the construction of 3 power
plants without a major incident. Uruk is a fully integrated Engineering, Procurement
and Construction (EPC) company providing turnkey solutions with single source
responsibility in the areas of power, infrastructure, oil & gas, petrochemicals, and
wastewater management.
OUR MISSION

We will rebuild Iraqs power and energy sector through leadership,

innovation, and excellence; Completing projects on time, within
budget and to the best global standards possible.

IRAQS POWER SECTOR

Challenges for Iraqs Power Sector

Electricity Generation Capacity

Transmission Capacity 400kV, 132kV
Distribution Networks 33kV, 11kV, 400V
Electricity Tariff
Losses of Electrical Energy Within Distribution Networks ~ 50-60%
could be overcome by privatization of distribution networks smart
metering of energy consumption and involving the private sector
Fuel Supply
Natural Gas
Diesel (LDO)
Crude Oil
Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO)

IRAQS POWER SECTOR

Iraqs Natural Gas

Proven recoverable reserves 2.7 TCM (11th worldwide).

70% from associated gas, 20% from non-associated gas; i.e. from
gas fields, 10% from gas caps or dome gas.
Proven reserves could increase to 8.5 TCM if exploration is extended
to many new areas not yet explored. Iraq could then be fourth or
fifth in proven gas reserves worldwide.
Available NG in Iraq Today ~ 2.2 bscfd.
Utilized NG for various industries
including power generation ~ 0.72 bscfd.
Flared NG ~ 1.5 bscfd.
Price of Iran Supplied NG 11% of Brent Price /bbl per 1 million Btu.
Current Value of Flared NG is 9 MUSD/d ~ 3.3 BUSD/year.

IRAQS POWER SECTOR

Estimate of NG Needs for Electricity Generation
Iraqs total electricity production during 2016 was 92 x 109kWh. This
implies an average generation capacity of 10,500 MW.
Assuming the heat rate (HR) for steam and open cycle thermal
power plants to be 10600 kJ/kWh. This implies an average efficiency
of 34% for conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy.
Rate of chemical energy required to generate 10,500 MW is 10.5 x 106 kW x 10600 kJ/kWh = 111.3 TJ/h = 2.67 PJ/d.
Remember 1 BOE = 5650 scf = 6000 MJ = 5.69 mm BTU.
Therefore, 2.67 PJ/d is equivalent to 445,000 BOE/d or 2.51 bscfd
which was burnt during 2016 for power generation.
Therefore, Flared Gas Plus Available Gas Would Have Been Sufficient
to Fuel Iraqs Power Generation during 2016 Entirely.
