CNS120 Flourish Reflection Due Wednesday, February 1st

Reflection to be added to Weebly ePortfolio (Research and Career Exploration) / Sakai

Assignment Book Club Assignment #2

1) What is your summary of this reading, its central message, and the connection to our
course and your experience in the classroom book club discussion?
My main takeaway from reading Flourish and our in-class discussion is that is important
to be happy in whatever you end up doing for a career. As we saw in the example with
Jason Brown, farming and helping others in his community became more important to
him than the money that came from playing football. Additionally, it is important for us
as undergraduates in the job search process to think positively towards the future and our
end goals and to make the most of the opportunities that we are presented. It is inevitable
that we will face rejection along the way, but it will be important in our development as
professionals in the working world to seize every opportunity we can get and look at the
possibility of rejection with a positive outlook.
2) What makes this a valuable discussion given the focus of our class? Which part of this
reading and research are most significant to you after this discussion, given your stage of
career exploration and self-reflection?
This is a valuable discussion for us to have as a class as we are all in the same situation,
young individuals looking for an opportunity to get our career started with a main end
goal in mind. While our first job or experience out of school may not be exactly what we
want, it is important to keep our options open and think positively towards the
possibilities of the future. After reading Flourish and our discussions in class, I think the
most significant point for me is to realize the importance of GRIT and self-discipline.
Nothing is handed to you along the way, and without hard work and a passion for what
you want to be doing, you wont be able to reach that personal end goal. This is
especially important for me to remember to keep working hard and give your best effort
toward everything you are involved in.
3) How can you use the content of this discussion in your career exploration or
understanding of yourself in the process?
I plan to use this content from Seligman and our class experience to do something every
day towards figuring out my career path. Whether it be adding something to my resume,
updating my LinkedIn profile, applying to a position on Handshake or attending an
OPCD event or on campus information session, I want to make sure I take the necessary
steps towards setting myself in the right direction. I also want to use Seligmans ideas of
PERMA and the happiness formula (H=S+C+V) to reflect on where I am in my life right
now and hopefully find out what makes me happy, so that my career in 10 years can
ideally be a reflection of myself and what I want to be doing.

Notes from Book Club:

-be happy in whatever you do
-think positively and make the most of your opportunities you are presented
-think towards the future, what is the main end goal for your career
